Help!

Just recently made a big purchase of couch/loveseat/recliner. Went to lots of stores and tried out what seemed like hundreds of couches.

Finally found ones we liked with microfiber--soft, easy to clean, NO odor.

They arrived and looked great, very comfortable.

However, they are emitting this odor that my son described as "camel fur".

My husband gets nauseous being in that room and it seems that their allergies/asthma are acting up.

Has anyone experienced this? What is it? Is it toxic? Does it go away? I've tried Febreeze, air purifiers, candles...

We complained to the furniture company and they are willing to take them back and give us a refund (which makes me wonder if this happens alot). I would prefer to keep them since I like them so much(other than the smell) but my husband can't take it anymore.

Anyone else with similar experiences?

My neighbors bought a couch from IKEA once and it had an awful smell. IKEA took it back. My neighbors had marked the tag to see if IKEA would try and resell it. A few weeks later, they went to the store and sure enough, there it was.....still stinky. :rotfl2: I think some fabrics are treated with certain chemicals and they plain old stink. I got a pillow at Sam's a few years ago that was supposed to conform to your head and the smell made me ill. It had to go back. People with asthma and allergies are very susceptible. Get rid of it.

My new leather ipod armband stinks like jerky. I'm afraid dogs would chase me down the street if I went jogging while wearing it. I'm airing it out for awhile before I use it.

Mine smells like dog. This could be why:

At this point I would prefer it to smell like dog!!

I guess my husband is right, send them back.

Thanks

Well, I don't know what camel fur smells like, so that would be a tough decision to make!

Maybe try a new set of the same furniture? Maybe its just the one you got?

We have a microfiber couch that has a distinict smell to it but it you could never smell it unless you were laying on it. it wasn't as strong as you are describing.

We used to have one, and I was thinking the same thing. The smell eventually went away--I think it was the stainproofing they spreayed on it.

OP--I'd be concerned that it had been returned and treated with SteriFab or similar. I have to agree with your DH, give it back and try with something else.

FYI, we've got leather now and it's holding up a lot better than the microfiber did--it's something you might want to look in to.

Hope you see this since it is a year later. We just bought 3 brand new microfiber pieces of furniture and they smell BAD!!! Did the smell of yours ever go away, or did you have to give them back?

We have had a few sets of micro fiber couches/chairs and none of them ever had an odor to them :confused3

No similar experience, but if they are willing to take it back and refund your money; jump at it. Many furniture companies would not offer that. Do it, and find another set that you may like from a different manufacturer.

Just purchased couch having an odor unexplainable-- leather and fabric- does smell like heavy dust --?? does it go away?

Did the odor ever leave? I bought a couch that has an odor like heavy dust - undescribable. Ever learn anything?

We ended up keeping the couches and the smell did go away. It was so long ago that I don't remember how long it took. I'm glad we kept them because they are so easy to maintain.

We just got a new Microfiber couch and 2 chairs at Christmas time. We do not have any odor from any of the pieces.

I'm glad that your smell is now gone. How about spraying them lightly with Febreeze or a similar product? It could keep the smell away forever.

There's a commercial for Febreeze that has 2 blindfolded women sitting on a very smelly couch, commenting how wonderful it smells. When they take their blindfolds off, they can't believe they're sitting on a couch in some smelly old warehouse (or wherever that place is). Your smelly couch story made me smile and think of that commercial. :goodvibes

Those could be formaldehyde from the construction materials or fungicides or other such things being sprayed for transportation from China. A lot of furniture is shipped overseas in the big containers and sprayed with pesticides, fungicides, etc., to keep them from getting infested or anything on the ships over.

A woman I know who does upholstery said she recommends leaving stuff for 'outgassing' for a good while outside.
