My neighbor was out walking his Jack Russell Terrier this morning when this big dog comes out of no where and attacks his dog. This dog was about 80 lbs and his dog is about 20 lbs. I'm told it is part pitbull

The "owner" of the dog comes running out and is standing there in shock, was afraid of her own dog. Turns out the dog is her sons and she's dog sitting. My neighbor takes his dog home, when he comes back out the lady and the dog are gone. She lives 4 doors away from my neighbor. Witnesses say she put the dog in the car and left. Hasn't been home since.

This very easily could have been one of my kids or any of the dozens of kids that are up and down our block daily :(

I can't believe some people have dogs that they can't even control:mad:

The Jack Russell Terrier is in the hospital, almost had its shoulder bitten off and my neighbor has a bite on his hand.

I'm sorry, but any dog that attacks anything, human or pet, without provocation needs to be put to sleep. There is no room for attack dogs in my heart.

This same thing happened to my MIL and her Jack Russell several years ago.....her Jack's jaw was about ripped off his face and hanging, while MIL got her hand bloodied trying to seperate them. I had to run up with a carrier to bring the dog to the emergency vet's while DH took MIL to the ER

Dog attacks are NOT something I take lightly...I was bitten Very near the eye when I was 4, and the resulting ER visit and stitches I received is something I will NEVER forget

Hope this story will have a happy ending. Hopefully, the dog's owner and his mother will take full responsibility for the attack.

I am sorry for your friend, but I won't come back here to see what this thread will inevitably turn into.

OMG - that is so sad. :(

I have been scared quite a few times walking my pooches. One time to the point where I put my hand in between my dog and the other dog (smart I know ) and ended up being accidentally bitten by my dog (a husky, who I know could totally take care of herself). The owner was right there the whole time, saying, "My back. I can't do anything my back is hurt". SO WHY IS YOUR DOG OUTSIDE WITHOUT A LEASH? I totally understand that dogs are pack animals and will fight to determine who is alpha. Attacking another dog and attacking a human really are very different things in my book. So, when a dog bites another dog, whose fault is it then? The owners!!!!!!!! How hard is it? Do not allow your dog out without a leash.

DocRafiki, if you do come back to read this thread, I would be very interested to know what type of protection you would recommend for someone to carry when they are taking their dogs on a walk. I want something that does not cause serious damage to the dog. What about pepper spray?

Just reread my post. Of course by "owner", I mean the owner of the dog who is doing the bitting.

That is terrible. I had a good childhood friend who was attacked by a dog when she was little and had to have some plastic surgery to repair scarring on her face. I hope that your attacked neighbor has documented everything and taken photographs.

I've had a couple scares with dogs in the neighborhood. All our yards are fenced in, but not all the gates are necessarily closed all the way. One dog came running out after me, my son, and our dog. I tucked DS behind me and wouldn't budge. The owner came out and said she thought her dog's bark sounded further away than it should be. She proceeded to "excuse" herself by saying the pool man was there and must not have closed the gate all the way. DUH...it's her responsibility to be sure the gate IS closed all the way.

I have a friend who says she takes a baseball bat with her anytime she walks her dog. Not a bad idea! Based on the dogs alone, my son isn't allowed outside unless I'm out there with him!

Absolutely. There are enough nice animals looking for a good home.

I've been attacked by a dog. It's very frightening.

That is so sad to hear about... the poor dog. I hope the attacked dog will be okay!

I'd like some suggestions too. I can't even walk my dog on a leash in my own neighborhood because some inconsiderate people let their dogs run loose.

Sorry about your neighbor. I hope the dog that attacked them had up to date shots.:(

UGH.. Ticks me off when I hear things like this. My mom's friend recently got bitten by a doberman that was off leash in a park. The dog lunged at her pom and she tried to pick him up in time... instead, the dog bit her on the hand and required stitches and rabies shots. Unfortunately, since she didn't speak English she couldn't communicate with the owner and he ran away before she could follow him and find out where he lived. Absolutely irresponsible!

I have learned to carry a big stick:mad: ..I was bit one time too, while riding my bike...People need to take responsiblity of their pets..
Hope all turns out okay..:(

How awful! I hope they'll be ok. These dog attacks are happening more and more.

That is awful!! I hope your neighbour and the dog are ok. :(

I am not a vet and would be interested to hear an opinion from one.

I have run into many dogs that are not on leashes while walking my dogs in my neighborhood. My concern is a little different than most of the other posters in that my older female walks fine on her leash, is well mannered and easy controlled except in two situations. If a dog that is off leash gets in "her" space, she will try to kill them. It's that simple. Also, cats that are roaming the neighborhood look like snacks to her! Because of this problem I'm been carrying breath spray. My dogs do not like minty smells and I really do not know if pepper spray is legal in my area. The other thing is in the worst case senerio (sp) and I have to break up a fight, I believe that is would be difficult to control where the pepper spray went and you could potentially disable your own dog. Maybe I'm wrong...just another idea.

Unleashed animals (cats and dogs) are a huge pet peeve of mine!!!  Totally unnessecary and potentially so dangerous!!

I'm sorry your neighbor and his dog got hurt. :( Do you know how they are now?
