My little girl is going to be nameless!

The choices my son and D-I-L had for my grandaughter were:

Peyton
Britlyn
Logan
Haylee
Kameron

but for some reason right after she was born my D-I-L said her name was going to be Aubriee Shia. At first I hated the name, but now it just fits her and she is the only Aubriee in her school so it's uniquely hers. I even use it as my screen name here on the DIS. lol

Dh and I could absolutely not agree on a name for our DD. Everything I liked he hated, and vice versa. We finally each made a list of 50 names we liked and the ones that matched went on a short list. We only wound up with 5 that matched. We still had not picked one of the 5 when I went into labor, but the minute she was born we knew exactly who she was..no question. Our short list was:

1. Kendall
2. Megan
3. Addison
4. Allison
5. Amber

Even though we named her Megan the second we saw her, everytime the lady came around for us to fill out the birth certificate, we kept telling her to come back later, that we weren't ready to permanently set it yet. We filled it out right before we walked out of the hospital.

We too went into labor with a short list of names. After she was born, we still couldn't decide on a name. The nurses keep bugging me. I my DD and I had both been formally discharged but we could not leave until we gave them a name. So, we called our family members and had them vote on the final three names.

Brooke
Erica
Haley

We ended up with Haley. We didn't go with one of our top names (Brooke) because our last name begins with an S. So, her initials would have been BS. An adult friend who grew up with the initials BS said she was teased a lot growing up (especially in middle school and high school) because of her initials. We didn't want our DD to have to go through that so we picked something else. We really tried to think of how the initials would look together.

I, too, grew up with a name that had an unique spelling. I did not like it and still have lots of trouble with it as an adult. So, I would suggest going with a traditional spelling of a name. I remember, not being able to get personalized items (braclets, pencils, etc) with my name on them without having to spend extra money having them personalized. So, I went into the toy stores, etc. and checked common spellings for our top choices.

One Disney name I like now:

Clarice (Chip and Dale's Love Interest)

When I named my kids, I first pictured them as smart and attractive. Then, I pictured them dumb and ugly. Can they still carry the name? How does the name look on the stationary of a CEO? Presidental election ballot? Can it be pronounced at first glance (mine can't)? What horrible knicknames can be derived from it?

Here is my favorite babyname site: http://www.notwithoutmyhandbag.com/babynames/10.html

I am due on 4 months and while that seems far away, it is coming so fast. We have no name picked out for this little one and we cannot agree on one. Can anyone throw out any ideas?

Here is what we have so far:

Kendall (which I love the name but just does not sound "right" to me)
Avery (Which I love but my husband says he knows a guy named Avery so that is out for him)
Peyton (which makes me think of Peyton Manning)
Natalie Marie (Marie being middle name)
Mia

Please throw out some names for me!

Kristine

Our daughter's name literally came to me while driving. I went home and told my husband that if it were a girl, she'd be Lucy. If it were a boy, he'd be Mark - that was it. We had to compromise on our son's name.

My DH liked the name Trey but all I could think about was the guy from Phish... so I grabbed a baby name book and looked for names that were similar and we ended up with Trevor. Now DH can still call him Trey and I won't be (as) annoyed!

And don't hate on Peyton!!!! :) He's a good guy! Besides, I hear a lot more girl Payton's than boy Peyton's. Ever watch One Tree Hill?? :goodvibes

Natalie is a great girl's name. How about Ava or some other form of Avery? Elizabeth (Betsy), Ann(e), Rebecca, Renee, Robin, Leann, Kasey, Karen, Kelly, Mischa, Kendra? Sounds like you're looking for something SUPER girly.

Best of luck!

My DD is Sarah Miriam after her 2 living great grandmothers. It just came to me like a lot of other people said. And I though what could be better than naming her after 2 of the most important people in mine and DH's lives. We both adore our grandmas. It ended up being really fitting that she was a Sharah b/c my grandma Sarah ended up staying with me for the first moth of her life b/c she was a very colicky baby. I don't know what I would have done without her help and encouragement. It is a tradition in my husband's family to use family names. WE have an Anna Katarina, Mary Catherine, and Elizabeth Joan. My DD's BFF is Anna-Marie with no middle name and her little sister is Juli-Anna Other names I considered for DD were:
Lily
Gwen
Anna Grace

I have a Gabrielle whom we call Ellie and an Elizabeth whom we call Bethie

I do love Sophia, it was my choice but my girls knew thier names before I did... I kept seeing the names everywhere. In fact Bethie picked her name no long into cell splitting. True. DH went skiing and took a picture of a ski run called Ellie.. well he didn't notice at the time, but the run under it was called Liz. We have the picture up in the hall.

I do wish you the best.

We loved Sophia too. SO much that we named our daughter that 5 yrs ago! We did get a lot of grief from family because they thought it was too old fashioned. But it fits my daughter perfectly..We call her Sophie for short

My son's name is Ashton, it was originally a boys name, but over the years it became a unisex name.....That being said my son is the only one is his class or school for that matter with the name of Ashton....I love how unique it is, his first name is also hyphenated...Ashton-Erik

I LOVE unique different names......I always felt giving your child a unique was cool.

what about for your daughter

Tanyon Elizabeth, unique and classic..mixwd together...

Wow you guys have a lot of unique names! I personally hate my name (Michele) because my mother only used one "l". I don't know why but it drove me nuts as a kid, when everything was personalized, but never with the correct spelling of my name!

My daughter is named Emily. Yep that's right; until recently the number one girl's name. When we named her 8 years ago we didn't know any Emily's. Now they are everywhere. We still love it though. We almost named her Jenna until my brother-in-law said that it was the name of a popular porn star:scared1::scared1::scared1: No offense to any Jennas out there, we still like it.

I'm done having babies, but I love the following names:

Audrey
Amelia
Evangeline (love that show "Lost"!)
Riley
Tegan(for a boy or girl)
Tessa(or just Tess)

Good luck to you and your new baby:lovestruc:lovestruc

We have two girls and their names are Taytum Elizabeth and Camdyn Laryn. ( which you say not like lauren but Luh- Wren or like Larenz Tate the acotor without the Z on the end) Good luck and go with your gut. My mom tried to talk me out of Taytum for about 8 months and I tortured myself trying to pick a different name but that is the one I loved so I finally said that is it I want what I want. Good luck and congrats on your new addition!!!

I also love my niece's name. Her name is Jaeleigh Reese. It is very unique. I also love Braelyn.

We have friends who have a daughter named Kendall. She's a cutie, but when they say it, it always sounds like "Ken doll" (Barbie's companion) to me. Perhaps it's just the way they pronounce it though

That is to funny because that is actually what I hear when I say the name too. That is mostly what is turning me off from it. Ken-Doll.

ooohhh, I love the name game! You have two great boy names, Conner and Levi are just beautiful.

PS can we play the boy name game soon? I really need to type Sawyer and Fletcher someplace useful! :rotfl:

Thanks but it is just one Child. Connor is his first name and Levi is his middle name. I loved both names and could not decide so we put them together.:)

I think that naming your child is the hardest task in the entire process. Choosing a name that fits them their entire life it intimidating to me. We went with traditional names, Rachel Alyse and Rebecca Anne. Our son is Ross Alexander

I do love
Molly Rebecca
Susan Claire
Ryan
Baylor

Good Luck!

I know! I am totally stressed that I am going to ruin her life by giving her a crappy name.:lmao: It is a lot of pressure!

Naming a child is not easy. There are three things I suggest you put any possible name through.

1) saying whole name out loud many times over several days. You would not believe the number of first names that just do NOT go with certain last names.

2) Consider what the nick name will be. Samantha is a beautiful name, but be prepared for your daughter to be called Sam or Sammy. - - Abigail becomes Abby - - Cynthia becomes Cindy - - Tabitha becoming Tammy - - etc. Many parents have beliefs that their child will go by the full proper name they gave the child but often by the time the child is 2 years old a nick name has been put in place. Sometimes it happens later. I had one of my 4th grade students this year decide he didn't want to be Matthew anymore and now it was going to be Matt. I think he was tired of writng out the whole name. Kids who do not have the best handwriting, often want to have a shorter version they can write.

3) Oddly spelled names or unique names are often lovely, but there is a consequence. Your daughter her whole life will always have to spell her name for people. Traditional names and/or traditional spellings do have certain advantages.

4) a fourth thing to consider but it would not necessarily be a deciding factor for me, is the issues a kid with speach issues might have with the name. As a Special Education teacher I have had many kids that could not pronounce their own name or the name of one of their siblings. Even peers trying to pronounce the name.

Great advice!

I am a veterinarian, so many names just seem to be dog names to me.

Today I saw, 3 Bellas and 2 Mias!! All were small cute dogs!!! The names Haley and Bailey are also super common dog (labs) names.

My DD is Claire, probably because it was the only name I hadn't seen on a dog's chart!!!!

Sadly we often call her Claire-Bear, so watch for nicknames!!!

I have this problem too! So many names sound like dog names to me.:rotfl2:

Great advice. #4 Really caught my eye b/c I knew a girl that had a really bad speech problem (pronounced r's with the w sound), so did her mom and when the girl had a baby she named him Carson -- which they pronounced as Cawson. His middle name and last name also had several r's. I felt really bad for the little boy when he started talking b/c he couldn't pronounce his name right since they grandmother and mother said it differently.

Just my 2 cents - I am not judging. I'm a nurse, and a lot of patients I take care of with unusual first names usually go by their middle name. 90% of them tell me that they wish they had either more traditional names or at least had their named spelled the "usual" way. They also wished that if they had been given an unusual first name, that they would have been given a traditional middle name. They find it annoying to constantly spell their names. I've had a Trinity Elaine (went by Elaine). KayteLinn (she legally changed it to Kay). Gainesbirger (why???) Aloutte (called herself Gracie). Diyanna (was in the process of changing it to Diana). And, and I had to laugh, Deeeena (why the four "e"s??). She said her mother wanted to pronounce it De-a-eena. She said it was torture. And, yep, I've had female patients named "Whiskey", "Drisdale" "Kroach" "Keester" (how horrible) "Rake" and - all one name mind you "Viviansarahbeth." Take that apart and it's pretty, but with Antoinette as her middle name, you can't fit your full name anywhere. I think of little children learning to write their names. That's a tough one to remember.

We had two boys, Nicholas and Christopher. If they were girls, we were doing the traditional route:

Allison Rose or Kristina Lee
I love Danielle or Daniella - Dani is just too cute for a girl. I love Julia, Amanda, Kayla, and Jessica.

And, to the vet - we adopted a dog who was already named "Phoebe." I love it!

My girls are named
Kayla Noelle
Olivia Grace
Alexa Faith

I loved naming my kids and tried to come up with names that werent too common. My Kayla is 19 and there werent too many back then. Now there are lots of Makaylas and Kaylas. Olivia is definately a more common name, but DH wanted that name so we went with it. Alexa is not a very common name, but Alexis is. Our son is named Jonah. We only know one other Jonah.

Have fun naming your baby. Its a big decision.

I have just finished reading all of the post and this has been a lot of fun! (Maybe because I think I just convinced DH to try for #3!!) Op, I fully agree with everyone else that the name will come to you. I went into labor with my second son 3 weeks early and he was born nameless, but we decided on his name before bringing his big brother in to meet him (DH wouldn't announce that he was here without a name). I didn't want anything too common or too unusual, so we ended up with John Michael - probably the most common name out there!!:rotfl: But it fits him well. He is 2 and his nickname is Big Bad John!

For a girl we had Alexis and call her Lexi. Not sure what her middle name would be.

I also love my niece's name and I don't think it was mentioned yet. Ella Anne. Of course, it has a special meaning for us. She had an older brother (Edwin) who passed away at 20 months old (before she was born). He had a little girlfriend in daycare named Ella and he would walk around saying "Ella! Ella!", so she was named in his honor.

Good luck with your decision. I'm dreading having to pick another boys name if #3 does come along and ends up a boy! My 5yo has already said if we get another baby and it's a boy he's going to take it back and exchange it for a girl!!:lmao:

I love these threads too!

My girls list includes:
Sadie
Tessa
Samantha
Emma
Annalynn
Kate
Lorelei

When we had DS I used to come home everyday and have a new list of names to try out on DH. DS ended up being delivered at 29 weeks so we weren't totally decided on a name. My last words were "you decide" while being wheeled to the delivery room. Thank Goodness DH had enough sense to pick something off our list! We ended up with Brady Christopher (Brady means 'spirited' and that's def how he came into the world and Christopher is my maiden name)

I love the name Brady Christopher! Dh and I had the hardest time thinking of boy names and of course we had 4 of them.

That's how I felt when my 3rd brother came into the world! To add insult to injury, the ultrasounds had claimed he was a girl! Of course, this was 1988.

Our boy name that we didn't get to use was Griffin Edward. Griffin because it's different, and Edward after my grandfather who passed away in 2001.

We adopted all four of our children from Guatemala, so we tried to incorporate part of their birthname with a given name. We have two girls and they are named:
Molly Ann
Gabriela Marisol
We also had Olivia, Ava and Isabella on our list. But all were becoming too popular.

We wanted something that was not too terribly popular. Something that would sound great as a child and an adult. Our boys are named Alexander Luis and Jackson (Jack) Enrique.

Since we seem to have similar taste in names (my own dd's name is on your list and my second favourite name!), I thought I'd share some of my favourites...

Ava
Analiese
Christiane
Gabrielle
Jocelyne
Kendall
Olivia
Sabrynne (pr: sa-brinn)
Skylar

If I were to have another baby (but I'm definitely not! LOL) it would be: Jocelyne Elise or Kendall Elise or Olivia Laura
