I am a little cross at my husband's "shortsightedness". I have a RSG week from Skyauction that when purchased, we had planned on using for March Break in Myrtle Beach. I got that notion because during the summer, there was lots of availability for March but of course, the minute I won the auction, the availability dried up. Now I am considering the wisdom of putting my family in an economy car and driving for 2 days to have a holiday, and then driving 2 days back again ( might be a little TOO much togetherness, youknowwhatImean!).
So now I'm thinking about using priceline to get some cheap flights and just flying to Orlando instead. By my calculations, I could probably get the flight and car rental for around $400 - $500. more than driving to SC, and I think that would be totally worth it to gain two full vacation days There isn't any availability in Orlando for March break either, but I could book a cancellable reservation via hotelkingdom, and just be prepared to "pony up" if still nothing at skyauction by the time we leave. I have already confirmed with skyauction that I can use my auction week for planned Nov trip.
The problem is that my husband doesn't want to brave the crowds in Orlando in March. I have already assured him that I have no intention on attempting theme parks, there are enough other attractions in Orlando that we could parttake of ( DQ, waterparks, WonderWorks, Ripley's Museum, etc.). My thought is that if all we are looking for is somewhere warm to spend a week on vacation, can't we do that just as well in Florida as Myrtle Beach? He feels that this quick, inexpensive "let's go somewhere warm" vacation is snowballing into a huge holiday. I, on the other hand, think that if I can keep the costs within a few hundred dollars of what we would spend driving for 4 days of our 9 days off, it makes sense to do that and have more "quality" time. Does my plan make sense to you?

Makes sense to me. I always think though with the use of fast pass you can accomplish alot in the parks even when they are busy. You will probably find something with your auction a few weeks within the date which is when I had to book around last Easter. There was nothing for months and then I had quite a few places to choose from.

I don't think I could actually go to Orlando and not go to WDW! It would make me too sad to know that it's "just over there" and I'm not part of the magic. Now maybe a trip to DTD and the Belz Disney outlet stores could help me overcome that sadness :teeth:

Your rational thinking makes perfect sense to me, but then again, I can rationalize almost anything when it comes to vacation. ::yes:: I've also heard that march break isn't that bad for the crowds.

Myrtle Beach is still cool in March. We were there for a few days last March break and were in our shorts only once with warm fleece sweaters on as well.

You can tell who the crazy Canucks are because we wear t-shirts and shorts while everyone else is in pants and jackets.

I think Orlando is the better choice.

I am not sure if you have used Priceline for airline tickets before(I am a big Priceline fan and user) but I caution you to read the FAQ's at www.biddingfortravel.com (forum that supports Priceline)regarding children and Priceline tickets. It was enough to scare me away from trying it but my kids are still fairly little. Just fyi as you mentioned usinf Priceline for tickets. I hate when my dh is not on the same page as me when it comes to travel planning, it is half the fun!Good luck, let us know what you end up doing!

It looks like I'm out of luck, this time. What REALLY sucks is that I've been trying to get him to consider DVC, and tonight I got a call from the Timeshare Store offering me the EXACT contract size and home resort I was thinking about. I told them we'd take it, so it would come out of inventory while I tried to talk him into it. To his credit, we did review the DVC planning video, and talked quite a bit about it. In the end, he just doesn't want to bank & borrow points to have one holiday every 2-3 yrs, nor is he willing to consider changing resorts part way through a vacation to save some points. I have explained to him that as the kids get old, taking them out of school for a week may not be an option, and skyauction is not a guarantee, especially during peak times like March Break. I'm disappointed, but I always pout when I don't get my own way. This time though, I seem to make so much sense!!

Well, I seem to be making progress in my quest to get to Florida in March, instead of Myrtle Beach. Yesterday I found flights from Syracuse to MCO, for $916 US, and when you add the car rental ($213.US including taxes & fees) the total comes to $1356 CDN for 4 people!. I think this is an incredible price for March Break week, it's only about $200. more than we paid last time to go during slow season. These prices are through Hotwire, so I don't know details about the flight except that it will have 0-1 Connection, and will not be a red-eye. Anybody have experience using Hotwire?
