We had been talking about it..."when this mess you're going through is over, we need to order that super expensive white chocolate coconut cake and celebrate!"

But I was just joking around!

My birthday rolls around and there's a knock at my door. UPS hands me a white box from Doan's Bakery in California.

Inside is a cellaphane wrapped, in dry ice, ribboned gorgeous cake covered in coconut!

If you aren't familiar, apparently every year Tom Cruise sends this same cake to his friends. It's about $130 to send it through Goldbelly and people talk about it on tv. And here it was...in my kitchen!

It was still frozen but I cut a slice. It was a traditional looking bundt pound cake with this layer of chewy toasted coconut on the top, then covered in cream cheese icing and covered in coconut.

After it thawed, wow-wee....that's when the good flavors kicked in. Honestly, I didn't see or taste any white chocolate, and there's suppose to be bits in the batter, but I haven't seen any. The cake is a good sour cream pound cake but what makes it amazing is this chewy layer of browned toasted coconut on the very top of the cake. The icing is thick, sweet and cream cheese and tons of sweet coconut on top.

Did I eat too many slices before putting it tightly wrapped into the freezer? Yes, yes, I did and you would have too. It was quite difficult to not eat a piece after every meal. They should call it crack cake.

I've seen several dupes but most all of them haven't tasted the actual cake and so they're leaving out that layer of chewy toasted coconut that almost has a caramel flavor. It's a super important element to the flavor and I suppose you could toast sweetened coconut then add a good layer when the cake comes out, then ice when cooled.

Is it worth $130? I would say no, since I'm a baker and could easier duplicate this cake. But...was it an amazing birthday gift? Oh YES indeed and I enjoyed every bite!!

Looks and sounds great! And a belated very Happy Birthday!

Mmm, sounds delicious! I’d say it’s worth the $130 (even if we could duplicate at home). Last month I bought a small 6” cake from a new local bakery for our anniversary and it cost $53! :faint: I remember not too long ago when those used to cost $12.99!

The thing is, your cake looks pretty large, how many inches is it? 10”? 12”? And shipping it in dry ice costs quite a bit too! Sounds like a great gift. Happy Birthday! 🎈🎈🎈

We bought a 10” birthday cake this past weekend from our regular bakery and it cost I think over $60. I’m sure it wasn’t as good as yours!

What a delicious and amazing gift your friend sent. Generous and thoughtful!!!

Darn it! Now I want that cake. 😜 Looks delicious!

What an awesome gift. 🎁 🍰
Something indulgent you would never buy for yourself. ::yes::

🥳 Happy Birthday!

… although …

Dh’s birthday was yesterday and he was/is working all week — won’t be home until Friday. What a wonderful cake for him! 🤣😂 He isn’t adverse to coconut.

(Although he prefers tart cherry pie, but a click of a mouse is easier than homemade pie.) 😮

No, the cake won’t be for my selfish wants, it’s for dh’s birthday. :rotfl:

I've heard of people spending more on concert tickets. :duck: Go for it. Friday arrival. He'll love it. And you too.

Thank you for the belated birthday wishes.

If you know someone who does love coconut, and you can afford to let go of $130 to Goldbelly, then I would say go for it. For someone who knows about this cake or maybe has heard of it via a tv show....then I'll admit it had a special oomph to the gift value and they would think it's cool.

Cakes freeze really well and you can eat some, then tightly wrap up in foil doubled up and put into a freezer zip lock for later. I say do it!

Am familiar with that Goldbelly website since I saw it first mentioned on-line somewhere. All of their products seem wildly overpriced and likely any sort of celebrity connection means they get a 'slice' of the action. The local bakery makes wonderful desserts that don't cost anywhere near as much.

Looks good. I love coconut cake.
I do too. Growing up in the Atlanta area we had a department store (Rich's) that had a bakery. They made the best coconut cake but seemed like we only got to have it around Christmas every year. I do have the recipe at home but it is labor intensive and time consuming and lets face it, I would eat cardboard if it had enough coconut on it. 8-)

I've always wondered. I've heard the buzz, but since I bake, I couldn't see myself buying something like that unless I was on the road and needed something special delivered to a destination.

A couple of years ago someone sent us a gift of those cupcakes made by one of the businesses that were featured on Shark Tank. Thought they were just average tasting cupcakes and not anywhere near what they charged. Not anything we would ever buy for ourselves, not sure how well that type of business does.

Ahhhh....the Rich's coconut cake!! I spent many days of my childhood, barefoot, standing on the cold marble of the Rich's bakery floor, staring into the glass cases! (yes, yes....it wasn't too unusual to see barefoot children out and about back in the 60s). I've not made the Rich's coconut cake but I agree...the recipe has many steps and you need a full day!
