My experience last week with substituting using new dining plan rules

I am re-posting this report I wrote on another thread at another Dis member's request.

I will share our experience last week with trying to substitute some things according to the new policy. At Columbia Harbor House I was told by a the cast member at the register that I could not have soup instead of dessert. I told her about the new policy and she said she didn't think so, but asked another cast member who told her yes we could. She then rung it up and it worked fine. She was very nice and didn't have an attitude about it, so I think many cast members just haven't been informed of this. If you ask nicely and ask them to just try to ring it up that way at Quick service it will probably just work and they will be surprised. We did this several times with substituting something for drink or dessert. The cast member at Sunshine Seasons knew about the policy and it was fine. The cast member at the Quick service Bratwurst place in Germany was aware of the policy and we had no trouble substituting a potato salad for the dessert with our meal.

When we were there in June it seemed that more cast members were unaware of the new policy, but if I could convince them to just try to ring it up they saw that it worked. Smiling and saying please just try it seemed to work well. I remember doing this at Cosmic Rays and other places. We usually are more likely to want to substitute at Quick service places, because the desserts are generally better at table service restaurants.

When we had dinner at Be Our Guest however the waiter said we could not substitute a soup for our dessert. He said the restaurant did not allow any substitutions. He thought it may be "because we are so new." I could have pressed the issue as I think he may have been confusing my request with substituting a different side when they plate all the meals the same with certain sides, but I kind of wanted a cupcake any way. I hope others will continue to post their experiences with this, and that more cast members will be made aware of how the new policy works.

Thanks for reposting.
We check in on Sunday for eighteen days.
Hoping to make lots of substitutions.

Thanks...hope others who are looking for current practices will see this.

We have been allowed to sub another meals side for the French fries that come with the steak at BOG dinner since they opened and we do the dining plan, so I know they don't have a no sub policy anyway. (Unless your talking lunch, then I don't know)

Hmmm, if I ever score another BOG dinner reservation I will be more insistent. We discovered that my daughter really only likes the potato leek soup there and we could save a dining credit for her if I just skip dessert and get her a soup instead. That's good to know about the side dish substitution as well. I guess our waiter just didn't want to mess with it.

I"m not sure, but isn't the change to CS places? Is it TS also? If so, much the better! Many folks don't want dessert!

Too bad it isn't what it was initially - tip included. What a good deal that must have been!

I have to admit, thought, that the room service dinner I got with my kids the first and only time I've had the (free) dining plan years ago was (although the food was mediocre) okay, the fact that we got dessert and tip included was a bargain! The meal for me and the 2 kids would have cost a fortune. BWI.

I still think you need to double check. Not sure if TS is the same with the substitutions?

At TS, you can substitute the dessert for a cup of soup, or a side salad, or maybe a veggie that the restaurant picks. It will not be available at all TS places, some TS may not give you the choice of the three, but only one choice. Still, it's always worth an ask if you don't want dessert.

I hope that they will allow some options at TS. My husband is allergic to eggs and peanuts so desserts are out for him. Being able to do a different side would be great for him.

I don't thing there are eggs or peanuts in ice cream.

That is correct but having ice cream only gets pretty old quickly. Would be nice to have another option.

My son has severe food allergies, and at TS restaurants they typically would find something for him off the menu, if he wanted dessert.

But they will do that for everyone who has allergies, DDP or otherwise.

That was my point I guess. Although, it was usually dairy-free ice cream. Don't know if they would have substituted anything non-dessert if we were on the dining plan; only used it once but that time they always had something safe.

I had no idea! I wonder when this rule was instituted!

This was one of the rumored changes last May. The TS substitution has not really materialized, but the QS substitution of any snack item in place of your dessert and/or drink entitlement is written into the brochure and is honored everywhere you can get a QS meal.

at TS it is completely up to the restaurant what they will substitute for dessert, or even if they will substitute for dessert. Apparently you just can't pick something else off the menu and say you want that instead of a dessert, like you can at quick service. Allergies are different. If they are notified of allergies they will accommodate them.
