My DS11 cooked dinner for us tonight!

OK, it was only hot dogs on the grill, but he cooked them all by himself and he was so proud that he ate two! (This is my kid who doesn't eat.) Tomorrow he wants to grill hamburgers, and I think I will let him! Why didn't I think of this before? BTW, they were the best hot dogs I ever had, and I told him so...over and over!

Congratulations! As my DD16 said, when she came home from preschool at age 4 having learned to make a cheese sandwich, "Now I'll never go starving again." And neither will your son. I have found the best way to get kids to eat is to get them interested in choosing and cooking their own food.

Right now we have a 23yo young man living with us and going to culinary school. He is the oldest of 6 and started cooking very early in life(his mother was a bad alcoholic and sometimes the kids didn't eat, so Eric learned on his own.) Even though he's very bright and could probably do very well in a traditional university setting, his heart is in cooking. I have no doubt that he will be a great chef. Who knows? maybe you're son will be too. Keep encouraging him. Everybody's gotta eat.

That's GREAT!! My DD9 loves to make dinner, usually she's just helping me but sometimes she makes her own. We are starting her small, soup or mac n cheese on her own.

That is great. Some people don't think that they need to teach their sons to cook.

My granddaughters 9 & 11 prepare complete meals several nights a week. Their Mom (my daughter) is a full-time student. I am amazed at the complex meals that they can make, given a opportunity to try.

Thumbs up for your son!!! I know if my DS12 cooked us dinner it would be a choice of 3 things. Hot dogs (we liked them boiled), pancakes and bagels. He makes these things regularly. He's now learning the art of making a grilled cheese. LOL

That is awesome, what a sweet kid! Homemade pizza is my son's favorite to cook, mostly dough rolling and my dd's is scrambled cheese eggs.

Ive already made promises to a higher being that my son ( and dd) will know how to cook more than they father does when they leave the house. Alex makes sandwhiches for himself at 4 and loves to help me with dinner. Bradyn( 6) helped tonight with the beef stroganoff. Keep up the good work mom.

My younger brother who is 16 cooks all the time. He started when he was in elementary school, thanks to the cub scouts. From PBJs to spaghetti, he learned to cook most of the "kid foods" by middle school. The cooking merit badge was one of the first ones he earned. Last year, he won the annual boy scout camporee "Iron Chef" competition by making grilled teriyaki chicken skewers served with cucumber slaw and a dessert of strawberry banana parfait. Oh, and he cleans up after himself in the kitchen too. My mom and I keep saying someday he'll make a dream husband for a lucky girl.

Hey y'all, thanks for the praises about DS11. He is a good kid, but he can be very sullen at times, so this was a treat for him to do something for us! And guess what, last night he cooked burgers for us on the grill! They were a little more tricky than hot dogs, but he did just fine. I tried to stay away as much as possible, and not one burger was burned, they were all very juicy and cooked through! I'm sure part of the attraction for him is that male primeval need to cook with fire, so I am going to try to get him to grill more stuff for us.

Tonight I am getting carry out to give him a break. I don't want to wear out a good thing!

LOL DBF is an Eagle Scout, of course he has cooking badge and to earn it he made......wait for it........scrambled eggs!!!! He said if they would have let him he would have earned it by boiling water! Needless to say if I ask him to cook we have scrambled eggs.....
