I have a nagging suspicion that it's been broken for several months. I never even noticed. Makes me think we don't really need it.

Mine's been broken since I moved in. Never asked the landlords to fix it. I like it this way! :thumbsup2

I purposely disabled mine. I realized the only people I would be opening the door for would've given me advance notice they were coming and everyone else was going to be ignored anyway, so I might as well be able to ignore them in peace and quiet. ;)

Mine has been broken for 10 years. If I know you, then you know to come around to the side door and you aren’t afraid of my dogs. If I don’t know you then I don’t want you to come over anyway. On Halloween we put out a sign telling the kids to knock.

Ours broke 33 years ago. People just use their knuckles now to let us know they are on the other side of the door..

I haven't had a door bell at any house I've lived at since I moved out of NYC 27 years ago.

Our door bell was broken at the new house we bought (17 year old house). We didn't realize it for a while, but we were getting lots of contractors, neighbors, etc coming over. We had a wireless doorbell installed. Now it rings with no one there. I've tried moving the dip switches, but that doesn't fix it. We may need to buy a more expensive one.

Generally speaking our doorbell actually gets used enough.

For Halloween 3/4 of the kids use the doorbell and 1/4 knock

For package delivery IF they do something they use the doorbell

Before we put up our "No Solicting" sign we would get people ringing the doorbell (it was a combination of boy/girl scouts, lawn care and pest control)

We just had our electric company out a few days ago that rang the doorbell. They were notifying residents that they would be switching out the meters with ones that automatically transmit information including usage and if there was a power outage and if the meter needs to be replaced, etc and that in order to replace the meter the power would go out for about 20 seconds.

So in a nutshell if ours was broken at least at this stage we'd replace it.

In a previous house the doorbell was broken..we put up a sign saying ‘our doorbells broken so come on knock on our dooor, we’ll be waiting for youuuuu’.

We thought it was funny :duck:

We spent a lot of money on nice new solid wood doors when we remodeled. I don't want anyone touching the doors! And with them being solid wood, it's hard to hear when someone does know.

When I listed my parents house for sale, people were surprised it had a doorbell at both the front and rear doors. It was built in 1960. The front door bell made a "ding dong" sound, the rear just "ding" so you knew which door someone was at. When we had milk delivery, the milkman always came to the back door. I'm guessing that was common at that time and the reason for 2 door bells.

We have two. The back (well, really side) is more of a "ding-dong", but the front plays a programmable tune. - DH will change it for Christmastime on Friday. :santa:

We totally need ours. Don‘t hear a knock unless one is near door. Kids ring to be let back in, packages ( my online orders!!) etc. Ours it hooked up to tge house phones. A different ring. Can also pick phone up and ask who is there. Intercom thing.

Our first house had a doorbell that never worked. A rather famous story in my husband's family is how my inlaws drove 8 hours each way and I "wouldn't answer" the door. I found out they had come when the neighbor called me to say they'd dropped off a package. What???? I'd been home all day. Who drives all day without notice and never calls, never knocks, just pushes a doorbell that doesn't make any sound and leaves? The creepy thing is that house had lots of windows and odds are they could see me - did they really think I was walking around studiously ignoring the doorbell?

Now we have a dog, so doorbell or not we'll know you're on our porch.

 Well that explains a lot - I was beginning to think you were just avoiding me...

Hi Matahari! I haven't seen you around for a while - hope you're well. :wave2:
