I know this can be very dangerous as it can cause intestinal obstuction, was just looking for anyone who's been through this b4. Jake got into our garbage Friday nite and got part of a leftover ear of sweet corn and gobbled it down. I talked to the vet and he told us what to watch for: vomitting, watery stool, acting like his abdomen hurts, whites of his eyes turning red due to sepsis. So far so good. He pooped yesterday morning and this morning but no corn cob.

He's a big dog...about 100 lbs. but the vet said there's still a good chance it could get stuck in the bend between the small and the large intestines.

FYI: The big dumbie has done this once before and he kept it in his stomach for three weeks before throwing it up. I think we got lucky that time.

I swore after the first time we'd never have corn on the cob in the house again and now I'm kicking myself for it.

Any one have any stories to share?

My old dog Babe and my dog Mabel now have done this a couple times. The cobs have always came out....the back end thankfully!!

I would just keep watching him and watching the poop too and keep the cobs out of reach!! LOL!!! Those dumb dogs!!

Our lab ate a couple recently, they came out just fine. I guess just keep an eye on him and let the vet know if anything is out of the ordinary.

My husband had a Shepard that ate a trash bag. He saw it sticking out his butt & had to pull it out for him. (If this becomes a tag I'm going to be very unhappy)

Reminds me of when the cat would eat those string icicles off of the tree :lmao: !! You'd know by the little trail behind her! (For the record we stopped using them after that!! Icky!)

As for the OP ... I hope Jake is alright!! We had a Jake too and he passed away about three years ago now. He was a bouvier / lab and was a big boy. When he was a pup he managed to climb up on the far back edge of the kitchen counter and polish off about three quarters of a full size lasagna ... little bugger!! We had many laughs over the stuff Jake did in his lifetime ... has to be the name ;)

Just a word of caution for anyone reading this - you should NEVER pull anything that is sticking out like that! It can do more harm than good. The foreign object should either be allowed to finish coming out naturally or the animal taken to a vet in case of complications.

I've been known to trim a piece of yarn from the cat but never, ever pull!!

To the OP - I hope everything "comes out" okay with your dog.

my dog has eaten a corn cob before and had no problems. that said, my dog is a bassett hound and i'm convinced is a direct descendant of a billy goat. he will eat ANYTHING...i'm not exaggerating. be grateful your dog only ate a corn cob. i get sick thinking about the things my dog has eaten (and he's never suffered any ill effects). :crazy2:

My golden ate several end that were cut off of corn cobs. We had no idea he had eaten them. Several days later he started throwing up all his food, then stopped eating altogether. He got sicker and sicker, and one night moaned and groaned and whined, and would try to bite me if I tried to touch him (golden retriever, never even growled a day in his life). He finally threw up with force I have never seen before, and it was nasty, stained my carpet forever. We found a cob in there, and that is how we knew. I'm surprised he survived, as he was so sick, I really thought he would die before the night was over. He did survive though. We found other cobs out in the back yard he had chucked up either prior to that episode or after. He had eaten them probably almost a week before he got sick though, so it took awhile.

I looked on line to see if anyone had an issue of a corn of cob eating dog.....here is our story.......i have a redbone coonhound named Tucker, he stole half a cob from the garbage at the cottage, about 4-5 weeks ago. I watched him to see if he would vomit, be unable to poop, any signs of illness associated with swallowing this half cob whole( he saw my boyfriend was coming to take it and just one gulp it was down) Nothing happened, everything was normal, eating, pooping, not acting sick, running, playing, literally nothing changed...so after about a week or so we stopped watching like a hawk........until today.....my boyfriend and i just happened to stay home from work and around 1300 Tucker decided to start drooling excessively and hunched over like he was going to vomit......vomit he did after several attempts up came this very green but still intact half cob of corn!!!!!!! i could not believe it......after all this time ......i know it sounds crazy, but it is very true.

I hope he is OK. No stories about corn cobs here, but if you want advice on how to manage the trash without having Houdini-dog get in there and eat corn cobs -- just let me know!

My kitchen was locked up like Fort Knox when I owned Houdini-girl. Trash raider, door opener, fridge opener, cabinet opener, drawer opener, and *I can work the microwave because if it pings there is food in there* hound!

LMAO! my basset hound also LOVES the sound of the microwave-he just knows that if he hears it, there's something in there for him! :lmao: the sound of my voice also makes him drool excessively. i guess in his case, my voice is like the bell used on pavlov's dogs!

This happened to our basset when she was around 4 or 5. We honestly did not see her eat a corn cob, couldn't remember the last time we even had it in the house. We rushed her to the vet when she started vomiting and acting lethargic. A couple of hours and $1000 later, they removed it surgically. She lived the rest of her 13 total years completely contently.

Our Daisy Lou (also a basset) was the same exact way! She was ALWAYS getting into the trash. Once when we weren't home, she stuck her head in one of those swinging trash bins and when she got out of the trash, it stuck on her head!! It looked like one of those vet cones! Such a silly (wonderful) breed of dogs!

omg u guys are so lucky with this. I had a bassett hound. We hadn't had corn on the cob in months. Well he ate one it must have been thrown over the fence. He started pucking and acting in pain took him to vet right away. He would eat anything and was senstive gag reflex he puke alot of stuff up. Well this time i knew it was different right away reason i rushed him to vet. The vet sent him home as stomache soft and xray didnt show anything abnormal thought he had a bug. Next day still puking gave another shot by afternoon he was still doing it they kept him. Next day he got barium swallow. It showed the blockage. Had surgery. 2 weeks after surgery i had him put to sleep. He had already coded 2 during the night. Which i told the vet if he coded to let him go but she resusated him 2. He had to have a 2nd surgery 5 days after the first because he went sepsis. They went in and clean it all out. He was doing so well too hardly any pain. I miss him terrible he was my companion as i am home alone sick alot. I have alot of breathing problem and no immune system. There will never be another sebastion. I had the kitchen gated off so he couldnt get into the trash or sink. He hadnt gotten anything in over 6 months or puking up. I knew it was different cause he wouldnt eat or drink and he always did he could throw up and 2 min later would want to eat or drink.

My dog Cleo got into our garbage over a week ago and she had been fine. At the time I didn't know she swallowed a cob whole. In fact she swallowed several. Over this week she's vomited all of them I thought. She was back to her old self and I assumed we were in the clear. Today she vomited several piles of foamy bile and had an explosion of watery diarrhea. I took her outside and she released a portion of a cob. I called my vet and they can't see her until 4pm today.

My question is ....Is she still at risk of a blockage if she's passing it rectally? I'm trying to keep her comfortable while I wait for the appointment.

Kelly :(

Kelly,
Do you have an emergency vet nearby? This is really not something to mess with, it can go bad fast.

If you don't, I would take her and go *sit* in the vet's waiting room. Believe me, if she takes a turn for the worse, and you're right there, they won't make you wait until 4 o'clock.

In the meantime don't feed her *anything* in case she ends up needing surgery...

Good luck!

Yes. Good luck and let us know how it works out.

This is one problem I haven't experienced, thankfully. But it is a good reminder!
