if croteching is allowed on a plane? My mom and dad are going to vegas and wants to know if she can crochete (sp?) or if that is against security?

Also, what are the rules regarding prescriptions? She has to have them in a clear bag?

Thank you!

Yes, she can! Knitters had a problem for awhile, but knitting is allowed on US flights now (Canada is a little trickier - officially CATSA allowed knitting to resume on May 5, 2005, but Air Canada and Lufthansa crew are a little behind the times and sometimes don't allow it)

I don't believe that the crochet crowd was ever subject to the same rules, as a crochet hook is a 'hook', not a 'needle' - but then again, a knitting 'needle' isn't really a 'needle', especially the nickel plated circular ones that many knitters use....

Just tell her to remember she can't take her scissors along with her crochetting. I am a knitter and did not even try to take my needles with me for several trips, then the last time I was checking on the official site about what is allowed because of all the liquid regs and I saw that knitting needles were allowed. So I printed out the information - in case I had problems - and off I went. We flew out of Toronto and had no issues on either the Canada side or US. I'm almost done with my knitting project now, so will probably go back to my crocheting project I'm not done with for the next plane ride.

Actually, Calena, that is where TSA and CATSA have differing rules. IF you flew out of Canada, CATSA would not allow even nail scissors. TSA DOES allow scissors with blades up to 4 inches in length.

Tim, she can bring blunt scissors, or those with blades up to 4 inches in length

TSA Website

Scissors - plastic or metal with blunt tips.

Knitting needles are permitted in your carry-on baggage or checked baggage. However, there is a possibility that the needles can be perceived as a possible weapon by one of our Security Officers. Our Security Officers have the authority to determine if an item could be used as a weapon and may not allow said item to pass through security. We recommend the following when bring knitting needles on an airplane:

Circular knitting needles are recommended to be less than 31 inches in total length
We recommend that the needles be made of bamboo or plastic (Not Metal)
Scissors must have blunt points
In case a Security Officer does not allow your knitting tools through security it is recommended that you carry a self addressed envelope so that you can mail your tools back to yourself as opposed to surrendering them at the security check point.
As a precautionary measure we recommend that you carry a crochet hook with yarn to save the work you have already done in case your knitting tools are surrendered at the checkpoint
Most of the items needed to pursue a Needlepoint project are permitted in your carry-on baggage or checked baggage with the exception of circular thread cutters or any cutter with a blade contained inside. These items cannot be taken through a security checkpoint. They must go in your checked baggage.

that's from the TSA website. She probably won't be taking scissors and if she is, she'll put them in her checked baggage b/c she is a worry wort. I just told her to take the blunt ones, and she will be okay.
