You might want to inquire with your phone company if they offer an early upgrade option closer to your trip. I forgot why I needed to do that once but it was within a month or two and it wasn't a huge amount of money. Basically you are paying off your phone over the the time until you can upgrade again so many offer a way to pay it off faster and get to your next free upgrade sooner. so the closer to when you get that upgrade you can wait, the cheaper it becomes to buy out the phone and get the upgrade.

Yep, if I waited until around March it would be close enough. I don't normally do the payment plan when I get a new phone, I just buy the phone but this time we ran the numbers (curse of being a bookkeeper) and it was less to do the payment plan.

Yes, the S7 works perfectly fine

It's not that the app doesn't work on Android, it's that the app doesn't work on anything under Android 5.0/Lollipop
Also important to note that it isn't just MDX that no longer supports old versions. KitKat (4.4-4.4.4) only receives security updates. Jelly Bean (4.1-4.3.1) and earlier are not supported at all.
