My Dear Irrational Fears

I don't know if all places do it but my hospital has a mirror on the cage so that you can see your feet sticking out of the tube. I'm not concerned about being in the machine..it's the fact that there could be a power outage or a shooter loose in the hospital (that's the totally irrational part) and I'd be stuck in the machine.

Every time I have one the techs know they have to show me how I can free my head from the cage and scooch out of the machine. It helps a bit but I still need the drugs.

I totally get it! I don't even like using an airplane bathroom because I fear getting stuck in it.

And I was always told about if a ladybug lands on you it isn't good luck. Lol
I always think it's a good sign when I see one or one lands on me. I was told that a ladybug is actually someone close to you who has passed and they are letting you know they are ok.

The only thing I really fear is falling. Not heights, falling. There's a difference. Top of the Eiffel Tower? Awesome. Something I'm standing on drops a couple inches? Terror. No idea why. But then, I don't particularly consider it an irrational fear.

I also really, really don't like kitchen trash. Other types of trash are fine. Just not kitchen trash. I think it ties into my fairly sensitive nose. Ugh.

Bush babies. Lol. They give me the creeps. I was riding on a train and the woman in front of me had something in her jacket. All of a sudden this freakish frog hand (they have the little circle things on the end of their "fingers") shoots out of her jacket and starts grabbing at the buttons. As she gets off the train she opens her jacket to flash what she's holding and it's freakish big eyes are just staring. Like a dang mogwai gone wrong! I can still picture that freaky thing burning into my soul with its eyes.

Luckily, it's the one and only time I've ever actually seen one. I had to google big eyes, freaky frog hands furry animal to find out what it was in the first place!

Just reading this is giving me fears I didn't have any

I'm more the irrationally angry type the the fear type. I'm sure if I thought about it I could come up with some...

I don't particularly like snakes and rodents of any kind. But, I wouldn't call it a fear.

Dentist: the only fear I have is the bill. However, I do ask a lot of questions. One of my latest procedures the dentist recommended a route canal with a cost of $1500.00 attached. I asked questions and found out that the particular problem that I was having (an abscess) could easily make the route canal ineffective. That would require a tooth extraction ($300.00) I decided to go with the extraction and save the middle man.

Procedures that I have never had done before like route canals, tooth extractions, cataract surgery all of which required that I be awake for them had more anxiety then fear, but, I was nervous about them. Any procedure that I can sleep through... I'm fine with.

Walking down stairs is a fear... I have had to overcome it almost everyday of my life, but, back a few years ago I misstepped on a stairway with my hands full and landed on my knee on a concrete floor. Amazingly, I didn't so much as put a hairline crack in any bone, but, my kneecap dislocated and popped upward severing my quad muscle and a number of nerve endings that now effect my walking ability especially going down stairs or down grades in landscape.

I haven't had to have many MRIs but when I do I'm always afraid that if the hospital was to go on fire everyone would run out and I would be stuck in the machine. Never even thought of a power outage or a crazed shooter :sad2:

Sorry for adding to your nightmare. I only added shooter because of an episode of Greys Anatomy. Plus, I've been reassured many times that there are backup generators so the machine will always have power. If worse comes to worse, you can slowly wiggle out.

But, an irrational fear is still a fear even when logic says you shouldn't be afraid. :flower1:

Lord, that bit of information would have been SO helpful to me! It wasn't discussed and I never thought to ask (again, I totally underestimated how upsetting the experience would be). To this day it's the idea of being trapped by that head cage that still haunts me. If I ever have to endure another one I will make sure they satisfy all my "worst-case scenario" concerns before they shove me in there.

Flying/traveling anywhere alone. I have to travel for work and I hate it, but when I'm with my family I'm fine.
Robots...the big, humanoid ones!

I was scheduled to have my first MRI a few years ago. Being claustrophobic, I requested an "open" MRI. When I got in there, it wasn't nearly open enough and I freaked out and got the heck out immediately. DH found a place that does "standing" MRIs and that worked out. I told him if anything ever happens to me where I need an emergency MRI, I can only do it if I'm not conscious.

Squirrels..can't go to a park because I freak about the squirrels. While in Universal Orlando about a year or so ago, as we were leaving I saw 2 squirrels chasing each other on a tree as I got even with the tree they decided to chase each other off the tree and toward me...let me tell you, I have never run so fast in my life and I screamed like a little kid. My niece was so embarassed and said so...my reply was I am never going to see these people again and there were many people around, some who were trying very hard not to laugh at me!
