My dd is a young lady now! (Ladies post)

My oldest DD showed all the signs of early puberty, but luckily, things slowed down and now, at 12, she still hasn't gotten her period. All her friends have though. Funny story though. From what I can tell, it won't be much longer and I wanted to be prepared for what she might want or need to use. Tampax sells a little kit....kind of like a trial pack of the different sizes for teens. I keep all that kind of stuff in the bathroom. I called my DD in and showed her what I had purchased for her. She looked at it...realized what is was, let out a scream "No Way!!!", threw the box back in the closet and ran out of the room!!! :earseek: I guess I can take that as she is in no rush for anything to arrive anytime soon!! :teeth:

No kids yet but thought this post was nice and reflected on my own experience.

When I told my mom, she started crying and shouted "My baby is a woman now!" I was mortified, especially cause I am the third girl and figured she'd been through this already. Later my dad mentioned something at dinner to some distant cousins who congratulated me - I just about killed myself. Funny though - I was 15 as opposed to 11. 11 seems like a baby.

As far as birth control is concerned, it does make it a lot less intense.

Just a funny story about a "celebration" for the day :)

When I was around 11-12 I was going on a little weekend trip with my friend and her mother to Sarasota. The friend called me earlier in the day before we left and mentioned she had started, was just asking me some questions (I had started a few months before if I recall). We were staying at a hotel directly on the beach. Now let me just point out from the get go that her mother was a little on the ODD side!!!! Not a complete wacko (she was a doctor in our city and a head on the hospital's board of directors) but still weird. She insisted that we have this ocean-moon ceremony thing for my friend to celebrate her "becoming a woman." This involved skinny dipping in the ocean and saying some prayer to a moon goddess!! :earseek:

OMG! You all have me freaked out! I haven't had "the talk" with DD(11 year old) yet. I don't know if she knows anything...she doesn't get much info in Catholic School! How do I approach th topic(assuming she knows nothing)? By the way, this will be the 1st of 3 DDs I'll have to tell.
Another funny tidbit!...my 3 daughters initials(in order of birth) are PMS!(not on purpose of course)

AspiringCindy, I would say it is time to start *talking*.::yes:: Before anything happens.

I have talked a little to my DD#1 (who will be 12 on March 2) but I also bought her the book "The Care and Keeping of You"--it is excellent and almost all of her friends have it--she read it cover to cover. It is from American Girl and you can get it on their website. She doesn't have a lot of physical symptoms either (gross alert--no "hair" yet LOL) but mine didn't start until age 13 1/2. I'm not in any hurry for hers to start--or her younger sister, for that matter. And DH is in no hurry to have 3 "women" on a cycle at the same time!
The day mine started was super bowl Sunday--I went downstairs and my older sister's boyfriend said "congratulations"--I was MORTIFIED!
I went on BC at 17 because my periods were so irregular and long and painful. It cut the pain and the duration in half.

My 2 older sisters (much older - they were "of age" back in the 50's!!) had no clue what was coming!! Things were much more secretive back then so they didn't even have the exposure girls today do. They each thought they were dying!! What floors me is that my oldest sister didn't even warn my other sister!! :earseek: Nothing like sisterly love!!

My DD just got her first period the day before a National Cheerleading Competition last month!! As you can see from the picture in my signature, she is a flyer and was more concerned with what others may "see" than that she got her period. Some of the older girls on the team coached her into using a tampon (without my knowledge!!!) and she did fine!!

She was totally prepared for her period as I have bought her books to read etc. I just let her know that if she needed anything to ask me. She was fine with buying pads at the hotel gift store we were staying at (although they only had Maxi!! LOL!!) and borrowing supplies from her fellow teammates. When we returned, I bought her her own supplies for the next time!!

I was a little weepy because it only seemed like yesterday she was a baby.................now a woman!!!

Wow, it happens so fast!!! I look at my little baby (5) and just can't imagine!!

I have always talked about it with my kids. It is just our style. We are very laid back, open people. I am hoping this helps when the time comes.

Wow I can't believe girls just starting are able to wear tampons. I have an emergency kit for DD but it is just regular pads. I physically could not wear tampons until I was 18! It was a wonderful discovery when I finally could use them! I know the flyer in the box says virgins can wear tampons, but that ship had sailed before I could!;)

My DD started very early...8 years 10mos (not even 9 ) She was at a slumber party with about 10 girls and it didn't faze her one bit. I think I was more in shock than she was. She's now going to be 15 and they just started to become irregular. So we are going to be seeing the Dr. next week. She thinks it's a hoot that her Dr. is the same Dr. that delivered her.

RocknRobin............I, too, was shocked to hear that DD wore a tampon with only having her first period less than 24 hours!!!

I guess our young ladies today are far more aware of what is happening and less embarassed about this topic than people in my age group (at least in my opinion).

All the power to these young woman of today............may they all grow up to be very successful!!!

BTW, I was 16!!!!

I hate thinking about stuff like this. My dd is 3 years old and so independent. I want her to stay little forever. I guess when it does happen 7,8 years from now I'll be on here, asking for support too.

My husband and I used to coach women's gymnastics and usually flew down with our team to big meets a day or so before the actual meet. Most of the times, the parents didn't come to the meet until the day of the meet. Twice during our trips I have had girls who started their periods for the first time before their parents got there. Usually a mini-pad would suffice because it was mostly a light period. I'm the one who had to help the girls since mom was usually not there yet. Both times, I called the girl's parents and talked to the mother to let her know. I also got permission to give motrin or advil if there was any cramping. (It seems to work better than tylenol for cramps.)

Rosemary, your kid's a trouper! DD did the same thing, got her first period last summer (at 12 1/3) the day before she was supposed to go to a nearby lake and get certified in scuba! Since she had been in classes for six weeks, she had to go. She took the tampax instructions into the bathroom with her and figured it out. They were from the "starter kit". She did NOT want me to help. She's been dealing with it just fine, but boy, does she get PMS! She's been getting it since she was 2, I think, but now it's for real. I'm a little worried that she's due again the same weekend she has the regional International Dance Challenge competition. Hopefully, she will have started and will be out of that mood by then.
