she's not black, she's white. She said that they posted that any one could join. I asked her how it went and she said she received a very warm welcome!! I love her courage but was worried if she would be accepted, sounds like it went great!

Good for your daughter!!! She saw something that could have been possibly uncomfortable and still took the challenge. She is a model for what most people should be non racist and proud of who she is. i hope it all works out well for her!!! I'm jealous!!! I love to sing and gospel is an amazing sound!!

She must be good! I love Gospel music and had the best time at the Gospel Brunch at HOB, Myrtle Beach(liked their show better than the one at DD) Maybe you could somehow post a clip of the singing some day:D

Pretty cool for all involved I'd say.

I think it's great, and she's sure to have lots of fun. :)

Wow! Good for her! I so admire the way the these black gospel groups sing! You can tell that it is coming straight from their heart and the "feel" what they are singing. Most white gospel groups (I didn't say all....just most) stand there like statues when they sing!

Wow! That IS awesome! I love people with their own minds!

When I was in high school I was bound and determined to be baritone. I was a second alto in the all girls choir and my voice was STILL too low for the songs. Sooooo, I asked if I could sit in with the mixed chorus and they let me. I moved from alto, to tenor till they HAD to put me with the baritones! I sang the Hallelujah Chorus with a bunch of big hunky guys at the Christmas play! :teeth:

You should be so proud of your DD. She wants something different and she goes for it, regardless of what others think. That kind of attitude will take her far in life! And as for Black Gospel, it's my favorite music!!

My school's gospel choir is very multicultural. Lots of asians, whites, etc. they're awesome, routinely sell out. if your DD is one of a few "minorities," then she's a trailblazer! :)

Just a question....why is it called a black gospel choir, if anyone can join?

I am proud of her and she is the first white to join and all others are black, who knows maybe others will follow.
Dopey Sharon - I really don't know, maybe it's been all black for a very long time so they just called it that? When she called I mostly just asked if she felt welcomed and was she sure they didn't care if she joined.
She has both Sister Act movies and soundtracks and listens to them alot, I think that is what inspired her to join. They have other choirs but it's just not the kind of music she likes.

I did that, too! I sang with the United Voices Gospel Choir. They were a fun group to sing with. If the group accepts her, she'll be fine.....:D

If they receive funding from the student activities fees that students pay, most likely they have to be open to everyone...as that is part of most college's funding rules.

My church choir is so multi cultural it's no cool...

Black, white, Asian, Indian, Bi Racial, you name it its represented. (Its not just the choir, its the entire church)

As for doing something different good for her. That is awesome!

Good for her!

That is very cool. Good for her.

Gospel is such an amazing form of music. We go to the New Orleans Jazz Fest every year and my favorite tent is the Gospel Tent. I get goosebumps just thinking about that beautiful music.

Black gospel is a style of gospel music.
Good for her for joining. My church is very multicultural (Black, Asian, White, Deaf, Biracial, Hispanic) Over 70 groups are represented. My old church was similar and we did a black gospel concert with Jester Hairston.

Awesome, Talking Hands!!

I just found out that Jester Hairston wrote the gospel song "Amen" that I grew up singing! Those of you who don't know Jester Hairston was the guy who played the octegenarian Rolly Forbes on the show Amen with Sherman Helmsley back in the 80s.
