My daughter is sick/New update post 117

Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I believe in the power of prayer.

She didn't tolerate fluids too well today, so she's hooked up to an IV again overnight. Hopefully she does better tomorrow and her test results continue to look good.

Thankfully her pain is better. She has an acute colitis as a result of the infection, and it's going to take a while to get her system back to normal again.

I'm exhausted. Thank you all. :flower3:

I am thinking about you and your dd here. Continued prayers and good thoughts getting sent your way.

Big :grouphug: to you all. My DD is 11, and I know she thinks she's so grown now, she's still my baby. She's adding your DD to her prayer list at school. Keep us posted when you can and let her know everyone here is thinking of her.

Sending up many prayers. Ecoli is such a scary thing. Sending hugs for you mom.

Many prayers for your daughter. I know how scary this disease can be - I had a friend who got e coli last year while her husband was in Iraq - she had 2 small kids to try and care for while she was in the hospital for 2 weeks. She has recovered, and actually spoke to Congress about Safety Regulations for food a few months ago.

If anyone's interested in reading, here is her testimony - http://groc.edgeboss.net/download/groc/domesticpolicy/testimony.of.ms.kelly.cobb.pdf

Wow. We can relate to so much of that. DD's illness came on in a similar manner, and the pain was just... I barely have words to describe it. She was in so much pain she had to get morphine and other IV medications to keep it at bay. There were also some moments that I was very afraid I might lose her as well. I just couldn't imagine why her pain would be so bad - I worried something else might be going on besides an infection, especially in the early few days while we were waiting for culture results to come back. But there wasn't anything else - it was simply (if you can call it that) the pain of the hemorrhagic colitis, which was basically the insides of her bowel sloughing off as a result of the ecoli. Hearing her screams for days and days is something I'll never forget. :sad2: :sad1:

Thank you for posting and sharing the link. I'm glad your friend survived her ordeal. What a nightmare.

Thank you to others who shared their E Coli stories as well. You hear the big stories in the news about it, but you don't often hear about the individual cases and what a difficult and painful illness it is to deal with.

DD is home now and doing better. She still has some stomach cramping but nothing like it was. She'll be seen by her pediatrician today to follow her kidney function with blood and urine testing.

This whole thing started about a week ago when she got a belly ache. Over the course of 24 hrs, it got worse. Way worse. It went from a simple belly ache, to painful stomach cramps, then bloody diarrhea and screaming in pain. (Sorry if TMI, but I think it's important to know so if others ever have anything like it.)

She'd been seen by her medical team at the point when it was stomach cramping; at the point I saw blood, we went to the ER. She spent 5 nights in the hospital. (Man, those were some long nights.) She never had a fever.

We still don't know exactly what caused it, but the probable cause, in looking at the timeline, is a hamburger she ate at an outdoor event a week earlier. :guilty:

Kids are amazingly resilient. I kind of thought she might steer clear of meat - especially hamburger - for a while. And we've all been trying to impress on her that she needs to stick to bland foods for a while. But surprisingly, she felt like chili yesterday :scared1: so I knew she was definitely on the mend.

As long as her kidneys remain ok, she should recover completely. Hopefully she'll have no long term effects to her GI system.

Thank you, thank you, for your prayers and good thoughts. Every one of them was very much appreciated. :grouphug: :flower3:

Continued prayers for a complete recovery!

Thanks for the update!
