My baby has a

{{hugs}} to you & Dakota! Isn't it amazing how tough & brave boys that age can be!!

Hope he mends rapidly! {{{{{{HUGS}}}}}} to you and him!

{{hugs}} We went through the whole ortho thing when dd broke her leg. At least the emergency room, put a temporary cast on it and we were lucky enough to get in the next morning to get a real cast on it. I remember how nerve wracking all of that was.

Awwww....nuts Shannon! :( I'm so sorry! Poor baby! Soooo...I'm wondering, aren't there like "itch relief" type powders out there? Would those work maybe even a little better or is there a reason you shouldn't use them? Just curious. :)

Bless his little heart. What a way to start out the school year. :( Hope he mends fast...and remembers not to do that again.

Hope he gets well soon Shannon!!

My friend's son broke his arm 2 weeks ago in 2 places! She was surprised they didn't put a cast on right away. Dr. told her it was because they needed to see if it would swell or not. His arm was bowed and they were pretty sure they were going to have to operate.

Looks good so far. Bones are straight without surgery and so they actually put the cast over the splint!

This happend a few days before they were headed for the shore for vacation and I found out about a rubber sleeve right here on dis that made is arm completely water proof!! AND IT WORKED!!!
He spent a week playing in the ocean with aeveryone!
Pm me if you want the details!!!

{{{{hugs}}}

Ouch! My DH can relate to that pain! As a child, he broke one wrist 2x and the other 3x!!

{{{HUGS}}} to both of you!

Putting powder down a cast! eeeewww you should see what its like when they take it off! peeeee and might I say uuuuuuuu! I had one on for 8 weeks and it was not a pretty sight with all the powder that I put down there when they took it off! The dry, itchy skin was a nightmare! The Dr's office gave me a huge container of Eucerin to put on the skin and it really worked great! They told me that had I not put the powder down there it wouldn't have dried out so bad.

I hope he looks to it as a badge not a bad thing, so sorry to hear that you guys had to go though this, Me and hospitals don't mix well either. Hope he is doing well.

I hope Dakota's wrist heals quickly!

Thanks everyone. He's trying his best to get out of wearing this temporary splint. He's decided tonight he's ready to become a lefty.:teeth: He can't wait to have the cast put on so everyone can sign it for him.

Jennifer, I might need to find out about that plastic sleeve. Where did your friend find it?

JTB, you offering to take us to WDW?:p

AKAH, I guess no powder is the lesser of the 2 evils, huh?

Kim, I don't know about the anti itch relief stuff. I'd say they have the same cacking up that AKAH talked about.:(

Shannon,

Sorry to hear about your little one's arm - I hope it heals swiftly.

FYI - you can request a waterproof cast (in MA they cost $15 extra - not covered by insurance but IMHO well worth it with kids!)

Also - another possible reason not to cast immediately - the ortho needs to check the growth plates in the broken bone (if the break occurs close to the end of the bone, the growth plate can be affected and the bone would heal but no longer grow without surgery). I don't mean to scare you at all - just give you another idea why you can't always cast immediately.

I just wish you could have gone to the emergency room immediately with a telephone referral from the Dr rather that ALL those visits!

Thanks, Aurora19. I think with a 6 yo it's best to have the waterproof, I'll try to ask the Ortho next week about one (I'm already nervous about taking him-I need to write up a list of questions to ask).:) A lady I work with said her son got his cast immediately when he broke his arm one time. She said they had to go back to an Ortho later because the ER set his arm wrong. Her son almost lost full functioning of his arm because of the incorrect set. She said that's the reason why she thinks the dr wanted us to wait to see an Ortho.

We have 5 films to take with us when we go next week. The break can be seen pretty good in them. My son kinda liked seeing the pics of his bones.:) We had a GREAT xray tech. He made us all comfortable, had my son laughing (and Dakota is VERY shy-strangers rarely get a full belly laugh out of him, usually he gives a shy smile. That guy had him laughing constantly.:)). He also took time during his lunch break to make sure we were taken care of in the ER. It still took us forever though. Mostly from all the red tape.

Oh Shannon you sound like me...

4 years ago on 13th Feburary, my youngest fell off playground equipment in the park & broke his arm & his elbow. I didn't realise it was broken at first, so just got him home & showered & cleaned up & gave him painkillers & put him to bed. Next day was a different story tho..............off to the docs & x-ray & then endless hours in the outpatients dept of the hospital. The doc refused to set it as it was too difficult being the elbow. Eventually we saw a doc at the hospital & got his arm plastered.

I will never forget that day nor forgive myslef for not getting him seen to sooner.:( I still feel terrible about it, but what is done is done & can't be undone. It just makes me even more aware now.

((hugs)) to Dakota..
As for being at the hospital that long...
Hate hospitals...

Sorry to hear about your son's injury. I hope all goes well with the Ortho.

My daughter broke her arm jumping off a bunk bed when she was four. I've seen some pretty bad stuff, but I was a wreck. It's so different when it's your child.

Good luck.

Shannon, {{HUGS}} for Dakota & you, especially if they re-set this!! OUCH!!!!

When DS broke his elbow on the 1st full day at his new school, back in 2nd grade, the teacher thought he was 'overreacting' after a fall he took, due to the new school. I KNEW it wasn't that! Took him to Peds. office, they sent me to out-patient radiology at the hospital, while there the Ped called and said it was sprained. We went home, I made DS shower himself (he was in pain). Shortly after the shower, another Ped from the same office calls and says, the x-rays were mis-read and, it was broken! I was SICK to my stomach. :( Next day, late in the day, Ortho appt. More xrays and, a purple cast!! DS was now to be the 'hit' of his new 2nd graders!

I hope since you've already been through the same run-around as we were that, Dakota will find his cast to be a 'HIT' also!! :smooth: Keep us updated.
