my 3 yo has kp

I have this also and it has always bothered me BIG TIME! I used to use the St. Ives Apricot Scrub and that worked well but for the last month I have been applying a generous amount of Cocoa Butter lotion right after my bath and the bumps are almost completely gone. I suggest giving it a try, I'm 34 and just finally figured out how to get rid of these things, LOL..

www.tropicaltraditions.com is a place for coconut oil if you can't find it locally. I cook with it, too, and buy from there.

I had this when I was a teen/20s and my doc told me to tan. OK, it was awhile ago, but it worked. Once I started laying out (with sunscreen!), the outbreaks were less and less and now that I'm in my 40s, it's pretty much gone.

my dd has this on her arms..........we have had good luck with St. Ives Apricot scrub with salicylic acid. it has really cleared with use of this product. not 100% but there is definitely improvement.
here is a good link with info on treatments

this is the scrub we use

for moisturinzing I use a homemade cream/lotion that my brother makes........it is filled with oils and butters, it is amazing stuff.

I have KP, as does DS2. I have a solution, too - Amlactin 12% lotion. It's pricey and hard to find - Walgreen's has is, it's $13/bottle. I've heard that Costco sells a big container for the same price, but there isn't a Costco near me.

Please, please, please check with your pediatrician before you apply it on your child, and if the problem is that YOU don't like it, I wouldn't put it on her - it's her body, and her "flaw", and if it doesn't bother her, why make an issue? I've had it forever, and I didn't care until the "vanity years" (early teens). I've not used it on my son, because he's 2 and he doesn't care. If it's bothersome to him when he's old enough to have an opinion about it, then we'll treat it.

That said - the lotion works GREAT. I only discovered it a few months ago (oddly enough, my pediatrician was the one who recommended it when she noticed the KP on my son, and I was all "oooooh....I know....I have it...I hate it!!!!). It doesn't smell nice at all - not really strong or offensive, but not perfumed at all. I put it on nightly, right before bed. It works almost immediately. I'm going to start trying every other night to see if I can maintain the smoothness with half the dose.

Good luck with whatever you decide! And anyone else with bothersome KP - RUN TO WALGREEN'S and buy this lotion!!

I've had this my whole life. I always use baby oil on my arms before I get out of the shower(on wet skin). I then gently blot dry. It works better in the summer than in the winter, but usually several days of doing this gets my arms fairly smooth. I know at least a couple of over the counter lotions are now advertising that it helps kp. Eucerin is one of them. Here's a link....

Your DD is not alone...kp is very common!:goodvibes

I too have had this my whole life.:goodvibes

Thanks for posting this thread and for everyone with the helpful websites and info. :thumbsup2 My DH has kp very bad on legs and arms. Had it his entire life but didnt know what it was until a few years ago. :sad1: Dermatologist advised that the sun :beach: does tend to help which would explain why so many find it to clear up more in summerand to keep moisturizing. DS8 hates his "bumps" (arms and legs)but doesnt let me moisturize as much as I would like. DS12 has a mild case. I did read somewhere that it is hereditary and is more prevalent in people from Irish decent. We all are.:shamrock: :shamrock:

Me too. DD also. Mine don't bother me that much anymore, but DD's are really bad. When she sits beside me and rubs her arms on me, it's like sandpaper! I'm going to try the stuff from Walgreens, does anyone know if you can use it on your face also? She had them some on her face, mostly around her eyebrows and cheeks. Not as pronounced, but still there. I want to help her get it under control before puberty hits and then she has zits to deal with.

I'm the one the wrote about the Walgreen's stuff. I haven't used it on my face, but I would think it's a very bad idea to use it near her eyes - it's strong stuff, and I'm sure it would be too harsh for that skin and would really hurt if she actually got some in her eyes. You might try very scant amounts on her cheeks and watch for reaction.

one of the best lotions that i have found is called vanicream....it is very good for pretty much any kind of skin condition especially for people with really sensitive skin....i have severe eczema adn this is the only thing that i can use b/c i am allergic to chemicals lanolin adn parabens which are in almost everything except vanicream...

its not cheap but not insanely expensive...its about $5 for a 5 oz tube but with this stuff a little goes a long way.....most stores dont carry it so it has to be ordered but it is not a prescription you can just go to th epharmacy adn order it

I would say that if you try a bunch of other lotions that dont work, it might be owrth a try to get a tube of vanicream and see if it works

Just wanted to offer some advice to this poster. My son also has very severe eczema. Our dermatologist recommended a cream called Cutivate. It is prescription only, but it has worked like a miracle. Don't know if you have tried that, but if not you might ask your doc about it.

We actually just started her on this this weekend. That stuff is $300!!! (We had insurance issues and had to pay OOP until we get it straightened out)

...I did read somewhere that it is hereditary...

If I recall correctly, I believe this is an autosomal dominant trait and that if one parent has it, there is a 50% chance that each child will inherit the disorder. It's funny because it's supposed to be very prevelant and yet, I haven't really come across too many people that have it (aside from family members of course). I have it primarily on my arms and although I had it on my face when I was younger, this virtually disappeared when I went through puberty!

My older son has it mostly on his upper arms and sometimes on his thighs. I've also see it on his cheeks (nearer where they blend to the ears). He's not bothered by it much...I think it bothers me more. We've used prescription creams and OTC...nothing really does much for it. We also notice that it's much better in the summer.

If it flairs up again, I might check out the lotion from WalGreens. Otherwise, he doesn't get bothered by it. Our dermatologist said some kids start to outgrow it during puberty but that it's not related to acne or other skin conditions so I'm hoping that it doesn't mean that we'll see bad skin during those years.

Also, I believe DH has it as well, although a much milder form. It is definitely hereditary.

Hello fellow KPers,

Just wanted to write to thank those who suggested the baby oil after a shower. I have been using it for a week now and WOW! what a difference. And what a cheap solution. Wished I'd have thought of it earlier - I used to use baby oil as a moisturizer as a teen. Anyway, it's working great for me, so I think I'll try it on my son next week! Thanks again!

Wow...I have something that I didn't even know I had. I have had bumps on the backs of my arms for as long as I can remember. I thought that most people had similar...I never thought a whole lot about it, but it is a bit annoying. Anyways, I haven't tried a lot of remedies to get rid of them, but I just wanted to say that when I was pregnant, they disappeared completely (only to return after pregnancy :sad2: )....I guess my overall point is that it is 'nothing' in the grand scheme of things (at least to me)....good luck.

i have KP as does my youngest dd. It flares up most often for both of us in the warmer months. After years of trying various products for myself and wanting to avoid Rx's...i have found aquafor ointment (or store brand version) applied liberally before bed (so it has overnight to really work) helps a lot. I usually put on a 3/4 length shirt or long sleeve so it doesnt get all over the bed. The oils also seem to help, but are so messy...the aquafor is much better IMO.

I too have KP on my neck and my legs. SOmetimes it shows up on my arms. I had never had this when i was younger, it just appeared one day later. I suppose because my skin isn't the same as it was in my 20's.
Anyway I use a product called KP duty by DERMAdoctor. Its made specifically for KP and works very well for me.

For a lighter moment:

Am I the only one who read the thread title and pictured a pre-schooler peeling potatoes?

I went to the dermatoligist to see if I could get it in shape before my wedding (had to have sleeves in August, which is hard to find these days!). She prescribed a moisturizer called Lact-hydrin (I think that's the name). It made it a bit less red, but no more than any other moisturizer. So I agree with the other posters - use an OTC one (Eucerin and Aquaphor seem highly recommended). I have never tried the Baby Oil - but am going to start with my next shower!

My dermatologist prescribed this for me when I was a teenager. I used it for a few months and saw some improvement. However, the smell was just HORRIBLE:eek: IMO the tiny little bumps weren't worth smelling like that. I stopped using that lotion and went right back to my lovely scented lotions. I'd rather smell good than have perfect-looking skin ;)
I have noticed our DS(2) has little bumps on his arms too. But like others have mentioned - it's very common and it's only skin. I'd much rather him have this condition than any other. Thankfully he's healthy, safe, and strong:thumbsup2
