When buying an iPod, what are your must have add-ons? I recall reading something you can plug into the radio to play your songs? Also, what kind of case does everyone recommend? Do I need any cables or docks or are they included? Thanks!

I guess it depends but my must haves are better earphones, I bought the upgraded apple ones for 39.95 on their website and a car adapter. My DD has the car adapter that plays through the cassette player-she is happy with that. I bought the adapter that plays through the radio-it works great in more rural areas but since I live outside of chicago it doesn't work well in the metro area- I guess it's great for road trips but is lacking for everyday use. My car , which is new, has a cd but not a cassette so it wasn't an option for me to buy the casstte adapter= so be sure to check your car before you buy. I love my ipod, I use at the gym, walking, at work(doesn't bother anybody else) and in the car- I also love it when I clean at home  clip it on youir waistband and it just keeps going everwhere you do and you can still hear even when you are vacumming!!! I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine :sunny:

I have an FM transmitter for mine so I can play it on any radio. I don't have any problems finding a station, but I don't live in a large metro station either.

I also have a car charger for mine. I kept on forgetting to take it in the house to recharge, so now I can just charge it in the car and never have to worry about it.

I have an iskin (iskin.com) and love it. :)

We have the FM transmitter and love it - DH always takes it in the car on his daily commute. I have XM in my car - maybe Santa will bring him an XM for his car.
Anyway, we use the FM transmitter at night in our bedroom sometimes and put it on sleep timer for music to fall asleep to.
DH is dying for a boom box type thing that you can park your pod on and it transmits that way.
The silicone covers are great - especially if you are clumsy like us and tend to drop things.

I think a case to keep it in is a must. I need to get one that has a clip :)

I just use regular computer speakers to play it from most rooms in my house. I also have an adapter that is hooked to my stereo in my car so I can play it while I drive. Kind of cool to be able to run the iPod from my actual stereo (not hte iPod)... charges it too as I drive. Can't use the FM transmitter well here.

i personally don't like the silicone covers for the ipods. i find that over time they make the ipod sticky.

there are some nice leather cases that have flip open tops. thinkdifferentstore.com is a good place to look for ipod cases among other things. i bought a friend of mine the marware sportsuit convertable pouch. it has a place inside to store your headphones.

i also agree with getting a tape adaptor if you can, it works so much better than the radio one.

An inexpensive cable so you can plug it into your Bose radio and listen on the AUX setting.

I used the contour case available at the Apple store. Yes, it is made of rubber (snap on) with a clip. My IPOD broke yesterday ! (YIKES) and I took it out of the case for the first time since May.

There were no scratches on it.

I have a belkin auto cable which plugs into my aux car radio. This works out well so I don't have to use the FM transmitter. My car radio is a newer radio which has the aux plug built in so I dont need to use the cassette player or such.

Ditto. Also an FM transmitter for the car; it's not phenomenal quality, but it is perfectly adequate :)

All these accessories and things - will they work with the iPod nano? We're thinking of getting DS the Nano for Christmas, and it's our first experience with an iPod. Any and all suggestions are welcome!

my recommendation for the nano is get the invisible shield (look it up on google). it's kind of expensive, 20$, but it will not let the surface get scratched, which is something people are having a problem with on the nano. if you don't want that, apple is coming out with these containers for the nano called nano tubes. they are through apple and supposed to be very good.

the car accessories can be used with the nano. because you just plug it into the head phone jack.

I want to get an Otter case for my nano but they're not out yet. They scratch VERY easily. Probably half of the threads on the geeky nano boards are about scratches, polishes, cases. It's not going very well on that front.

I use a baby's sock. Found them at Target - six month size. It's flat, blue stripe with a puppy stitched to the toe. Added some elastic to the cuff and it stays put. Cheap, too.

The FM transmitter is a good add on if you'll be using it in the car. The cassette adapter will have better sound quality, but they're becoming rarer.

Car charger and an iTrip (FM Transmitter). I love my iTrip. I use it at work on the radio there as well.
