Music help? I need to know what 16-32 bars are...

from the song "What Ive Been Looking For" from HSM. My DS is auditioning for voice lessons, and he wants to sing this song (The Ryan and Sharpay version)

He needs to sing 16-32 bars, and we don't have the sheet music to know how much he should sing.

Can anyone help? TIA.

In a piece of music each measure or "bar" is divided by a vertical line that goes the entire height of the staff (5 horrizontal lines). There will probably be 3 or 4 beats per "bar".

So in the picture below, the first "bar" has three notes.

So, by using that example, you could find the sheet music somewhere and tell him where to stop.

I would look at music stores for the book. Are there any nearby? Any of hts friends- siblings? The music teacher at school? My library has sheet music sometimes.

Check sheet music.com or whatever the website it. You can print samples of songs and they will probably be at least 16 bars long--you won't get the whole song but maybe 1/2 of the first page or so.

well my advice from the most unmusical person on the face of the planet. When I was in Jr. High band most of the music had 4 beats to a bar. So each bar was about 4 seconds long. So say 20 (or somewhere in between 16 and 32) times 4 seconds would be 80 seconds -- or 1 minute 20 seconds.


I would say somewhere between 1 to 2 minutes and you should be ok.

Tempo and meter aside , the above time estimation is probably correct. Most vocal auditions for someithing like that just want a minute or two - not a full 4 minute radio performance.

OK, I don't know the songs from that show, but I just listen to a sample and at the tempo at which they sing it, 32 bars would last just a few seconds over one minute.
