Hi DVC experts, I hope ya'll can help out a newbie with some DVC research. I am in the process of buying 150 pts resale at SSR and I am considering purchasing 75 pts direct so I will feel like a full DVC member. ;)

My resale pts will have a March use year. I requested 75pts with a March use year at BLT direct and was told there is a wait list. Since I am inpatient and want my points now, I was considering any use year at BLT just to get off the wait list sooner. I am not sure what the pros and cons are of having multiple contracts at different home resorts and with different use years would be.

Thanks in advance for all the coming great advice!

I'm afraid 75 points at BLT will not buy you very many nights. Might make more sense to buy more SSR direct with the same use year. This would allow you to play with the 7 month window if you had to down the road. Are you wanting studios, 1 bd or 2 bd accomediations?

Unless you plan on using the points (contracts) for separate vacations, I would highly recommend getting the same UY. It will become a pain to book a single vacation using the 2 different UY contracts.

We can only vacation 4-5 nights per year, thanks to kiddos being in school, and the fact we live in TX makes the distance a little bit of an obstacle. My plan was use the SSR each year, bank the 75 BLT and use them every other year. In the BLT year, i will transfer some points from the SSR contract to cover the balance due. I assume you can transfer points between contracts with different use years??? If not, that might answer my question.
;)

Transfers are not as easy as you think because you can't see the points, even having contracts at the same resort with different UY's is difficult to use together. I would just wait for the points to come up for the same UY.

You can transfer out or in once per UY per membership. The points retain their home resort and UY. IOW, you would not be able to use the SSR points to book BLT at 11 months even if you were to transfer them in to the BLT membership. It completely negates having any kind of home resort booking advantage at BLT because you would need to wait until the 7-month booking window when a point is a point regardless of the home resort. If that's your plan, go with the cheaper SSR points. Lower buy-in price, match the UY and the dues are lower.

I strongly suggest patience. It's much nicer to have in 1 unless you only plan to use each separately. You might have a difficult time getting DVC to sell you a different UY - they really recommend one and sometimes won't do anything but match up to your current UY.

Just giving you an example of the difficulty of combining contracts, I booked a VGF week next February 2019 with our June UY contract and February UY contract. Well, after I used the contracts to separately to book 3 days with one contract and 4 days with the other contract, I called up DVC to combine the reservation so we wouldn't have to change rooms. Not so easy it turns out...... the computer system for some reason put my 5 year old daughter as the lead on one of the reservations and myself on the other even though I had inputted all the name of the 2 reservations correctly and in the same order. The CM I got the first time couldn't combine the reservations and had to elevate the call to the next level to the IT department. We are planning on adding the dining plan when the 2019 prices come out, and apparently I might have to go through the whole thing again to get the reservation considered a "continuous stay". This has convinced us that trying to book a reservation with 2 separate UY contracts is a disaster waiting to happen, and are going to try and sell one of our contracts next year after this stay.

Keep the same UY and buy enough BLT points to get you the stay that you want every other year with maybe a split stay night or two with your excess SSR points.

No matter what you're going to have a litttle bit of hassle with combining points and the stress of not leaving points behind.

I honestly would want the opposite... excess BLT points to guarantee home booking advantage and SSR points mixed with any leftover BLT points so they don't get wasted to be used at 7 months on the non-BLT years.

The extra work involved isn't worth it. CM's and the booking system has difficulty with transferred points and booking has enough uncertainty and challenges already.
