Hello folks

This maybe a stupid question, but going to ask anyways...

Is there an advantage to owning multiple smaller points contracts at different DVC's (50-100 points ea), as apposed to one 200 point contract at one resort?

Besides being able to book 11 mons out at each DVC, being able to resell a smaller contract easier if needed.

Thanks

tim

Smaller contracts give you the benefit of staying at various DVC resorts with the benefit of the 11 month window. The only drawback is that you may only be able to stay at each resort every 3 years (bank and borrow). Of course at the 7 month window all your resort points can be used together. Its easier to track multiple resort points if you keep all the same UY's.

Those are the reasons we did it.

We wanted to be able to book BWV, VWL or AKV at the 11-month window. For example, we have a 100-pt contract at VWL. By banking our points every other year, we have 200 points to use at the 11-month window at VWL. When we bought that contract, that gave us enough points for a 7-night stay in Dec or Jan or a 6-night stay in May but since the 2010 point reallocation, we no longer have enough points to do that. So if you decide to do this, be aware that the number of points needed to book a particular stay can change over time and disrupt your plans.

We also liked the idea that if we find we aren't going to WDW as often in the future, we can reduce our total point holdings by selling off one of our 50-pt contracts or a 100-pt contract or our largest contract, depending upon how much we want to "downsize".

Owning at multiple resorts (even with the same UY on all contracts) does make it more complicated to manage your point usage but it's worth it to us to have the flexibility.

Some people split their points into smaller amounts so that each of their children will inherit their own share of DVC points. However, most of these type contracts are at the same resort.

Others buy small contracts as they fit their budget and with the banking, using and borrowing are able to reserve a villa once every three years.

Personally I think it would take lots of will power to only use the points once every three years. Then if you ever borrow from those points for a longer stay somewhere else it would be very difficult to get back on track.

I can see that addonitis would strike me regularly until I had three different contracts so I had enough points to go each year, even though I was still banking, using and borrowing on each of the contracts.

I don't think that is a cure for addonitis. It is a chronic condition... :upsidedow

As for us, we own 160 at BLT and 50 @ VGC. Master plan is for 6 nights @ WDW every year; book a BLT studio 11 months out, probably change to others at 7 sometimes for some variety. Then go for 5 nights in a studio @ VGC booked 11 months out every 3 years or so (bank & borrow). Then with the remaining points book trips for others and or additional ones for us.

So far we have made these reservations:
  • 3 nights VWL studio booked in July for mid-Oct. '09 using mixed points
  • 6 nights BLT LV studio right after Thanksgiving 2009 booked on the crazy Feb. first day of BLT owners reservations
  • 6 nights BLT MK view studio arriving Jan 30th 2010, booked @ 11 mo.
  • 3 nights BLT SV studio (for my parents) Feb. 1st 2010, booked @ 11 mo.
  • 3 nights BLT SV studio (for DW's parents) Feb. 2nd 2010, booked around October IIRC using mixed points <started @ VWL; waitlisted BLT>
  • 5 nights VGC studio arriving Oct. 16th 2010, booked @ 11 mo.

we have an August use year and have used every single one of our 2009 & 2010 points and both contracts and borrowed every one of our VGC 2011 points.

So we are on track with our usage plans! :goodvibes I'd love to book some more trips and have addonitus again already, BUT we don't have the money or vacation time from work (need some to visit relatives for Christmas, etc.) to do any more at this point!

Actually Resale too.. Smaller contracts sell faster and for more $$ per point. due to the general public cannot buy a 50 point contract from DVC, but can resale they sell close to the current sales price. If you want to get rid of 1 but not the others.. no problem.

Thank you for the information.

Going to WDW everfy 2-3 years is what we are doing now...I don't see that changing for a bit.

As much as we want to get away from the Canadian snow, I don't think that will change.

So this might be a good option for us.

thanks

Historically the contracts will sell faster and at a higher price.

I agree with the previous posters' comments on the pros and cons of small contracts. Many of those are the reasons I have 7 relatively small contracts, with two larger ones of 100 and 150, respectively.

I think the pros outweigh the cons, especially since they are all the same use year. The one thing I can think of that would be a "con" would be if a member wanted to transfer a great deal of points out to another member. Since you are allowed only one transfer (in or out), you could only transfer the points from one of your contracts. So even if you have 250 points at VWL for example, but they were broken into 5 contracts of 50, you could only transfer out 50 points, instead of the full 250. (This is assuming all of your contracts are under the same membership number.)

Personally, that has never been an issue for me, since my transfers have always be a transfer IN.
