MSNBC attacks Disney for its "no-fly" zone!

I was just watching Scarborough Country on MSNBC and they had a piece talking about how its ridiculous that the theme parks Disney owns have a no-fly zone restriction on them, while other parks and other "more important" locations around the US don't. They went on to say that it wasn't about protecting the guests, it was about stopping advertising in the skies over Disney property.

Just wanted to pass it along as I thought it was ridiculous.

Wow, what a shock. Let's see, who owns Universal Studios?

Exactly.

I'm sure that if the no fly zone was lifted, all of that advertising that Universal would be running would have that theme park busting at the seams. If they want to continue to try to compete with WDW, they would be better off to stop complaining about the big bully down I-4 and start investing into their product to attract more people.

And anyway, don't we always see the Jesus guy doing his sky writing around WDW? Obviously he is not violating the no-fly zone, and you can plainly see what he is doing.

On our trip in March, we saw (and photographed) an airplane pilot writing "Jesus Saves" with the smoke cloud stuff. It was in the air above the Coronado Springs (west property area) of the resort. I found no issue with that, but dragging the tacky banners overhead such as what you see at the beach would detract from the "magic" as we all call it.

that skywriter's work is visible from all the parks. you know how you can see the sun? (please don't look directly at it) that doesn't mean it's right above your head (although orlando can sure make it feel that way).

it's been reported he flies out of kissimee.

blah blah blah.

I happen to love Mr Skywriter. :)

The media will say anything negative about Disney just to boost the ratings. I had not hear about this one, but my statement is the same as above...blah blah blah! :rotfl:

This is a product of Sweeps Month, which May is one. Pull in people to watch the news with stories like this, your ratings go up, your advertising dollars increase for the next TV season. Check even your local news broadcasts. Lots of teasing to get you to tune in and it's all tied to the almighty dollar which Disney is very often criticized for. Sometimes I think some of these news stations hope something horrible will happen in May or Nevember for sweeps months.

What's even more ridiculous is that they're calling a simple 3,000 foot floor restriction within 3.3 miles of the place a "no-fly zone,"

What is the law? Can Disney impose this on their own, surely they need to make a request and some authority approves it?

I guess MSNBC decided to pick on Disney today. I'll stick to Fox news

You might try PBS for a more indepth and balanced look at the current issues affecting our world. I'm not sure you'll get that on FOX News, either! Commercial stations are committed to creating commerce for their corporations/shareholders. That strongly affects what and how they report "the news"!

You make a good point. We went to Universal one time and I was put off on a number of occasions where employees made comments like, you're not at Disney, almost mocking the family friendly attitude. Do what you do and appeal to whomever you want, but you don't have to insult your competition.

Universal's best advertising is simply being located near WDW. Without the mouse, I'd be willing to bet their bottom line would shrink in no time. We've tried the Orlando one and the LA one, and were frankly disappointed. Now we did not do the roller coaster part in Orlando, but I would question if it's any better than say a park like Cedar Point?

It's no accident that they have a park in Orlando, and in LA. I think they have one in Japan too, and my guess is it's located within normal driving distance of Disney there. I wonder when Universal Paris is set to open?

Universal had their Studio tour in LA before Disney opened any park. Universal have a park (or at least a substantial interest in a Park) in Spain near Salou.

I know that there are more important places in the U.S than DW but, I am really happy about the no fly zone. I would hate to hear the constant buzz of advertising planes overhead all day. That is one of the reasons that Disney is so awsome, because they focus on the smallest details to amke the whole package appear almost flawless...Now if they could only find a way to make it rain only between the hours of 1 a.m. and 5 a.m.

Do sporting venues still have the no-fly zones, or has that gone away? To me, it would seem those types of places and as sad as it is to think, WDW would be prime targets for terrorist acts, thus justifying the no-fly zone status.

Universal Studios Park opened in 1964, Disneyland in 1955.

I think Andy was referring to the tours Universal did on their studio property. I was talking about the full-blown park, which is what I believe the dates you gave would be related to.
