I am starting my Master's soon and I am looking for a copy of MS Office (for pc). During the school year, I have a Mac laptop I can use with Office on it but I doubt I'll be able to keep it for the summer. So I need a copy for my home computer. I'll be taking classes online and will need to submit papers and powerpoint presentations electronically. I just can't believe the price tag! Anyone know if and where I might be able to find it cheaper (than about $120).

Have you looked into MS student? I don't remember all the programs as we bought it for DGD about 4 years ago, but it was completely adequate for jr. and sr. years of HS and her first two years of college. I seem to remember that it cost +/- $120 - adjust for current economy.

You have to be enrolled in school and have a valid university email address to get this but it's the absolute best deal on Office out there right from Microsoft.

Find out from your school, too, if they have an online student store with discounted software. I know University of Phoenix does and their price for Office is almost as good as Microsoft's.

Unless you have access to a corporate copy (usually professional, not student or home) that was bought with a site license for employees, you will have to pay the going rate. MS office is not really discounted heavily anywhere. Microsoft controls prices pretty tightly. Student is your best bet unless you need specific programs that aren't available on it. But from what you wrote, student version will be fine.

Honestly when I got a new laptop I just stopped using MSO. I use google docs or open office, both free, and have had absolutely 0 compatibility issues in the past year. I work on a mac laptop and pc desktop.

If you can't afford MS Office, then look into getting Open Office.

I will have to email attachments that end in .doc, .docx, .ppt, or .pptx, which I think will limit me to Office.

I downloaded Open Office when I started my Masters but I didn't like it. I was able to get MS Office for about $60-70 because I was a student (probably the link the PP posted). Just make sure you have a student email...

Get yourself a copy of open office. It is modeled after office 97 but does everything the modern versions of office will do. It is all i use on my computers and the up side it will open more then just MS files but also mac and so on...

You can also get a copy of office from MS as a student. As said all you need is an email address from one of their acknowledged schools. I have bought several copies of Windows 7 and Office this way.

This all has already be said but i wanted to reinforce this is a great way to go.

I also use Open Office in place of MS Office, we run our entire business off the Open Office platform. You can definitely save your files in the formats that you listed if you use Open Office.

Go through Microsoft and get a student discount or check with the IT department at your school because there are probably ways for you to get it that way as well. I also wouldn't recommend going through sites that are offering it super cheap - many of them aren't legitimate.

I fell for this one time (for a different software program - Adobe Creative Suite) and the program wouldn't even install. It was like pulling teeth, but they finally issued a refund to me after I refused to try another copy. I ended up finding the BEST deal through Adobe directly, through their academic site.

Hello,

I am a college professor and I teach Software Applications.

Make sure you know which version of MSO you should have. Is MSO 2010 okay? And you need to know which software you might need to use. For example in my course Powerpoint is needed - but MSO Home/Student does not have Powerpoint included. If you need Powerpoint you need MSO Professional.

Check with your school's bookstore. My school's bookstore offers MSO Professional at a much discounted price - about $109 - lists for $480

Checking to make sure you have all the correct software is very important especially for online courses.

Good luck!

If you're doing online classes that will use Blackboard, I can tell you that the current, newly updated version of Blackboard seems to have lots of issues with MS Office (I don't use Office, I just know what I read on the Blackboard support stuff).

I agree with using Open Office. Or I actually find myself using Notepad quite a bit.

www.theultimatesteal.com

It's a genuine site through Microsoft, designed for students/teachers/etc. Office 2010 is available for Windows, and Office 2011 for Mac. I've purchased from it in the past, and recommend it to my students- the prices are the best I've seen ($99 for the Professional Plus version).

I was able to order the academic version through my college for about $100. Go through through your school website and see if you can find it.
