If you were moving and possibly flying to the new area, would you send your computer with the moving van or ship it separately, directly to your new address. Thanks!

Are you kidding? our computers get treated like children LOL

Not by me, I am pretty easy going...at least that is what I call it. But my husband is very protective of his computers.

If he had to fly, computers would be shipped separately and insured up the wazoo.

And I will add that it would be a stressful time until they were reunited.

Dan...Thinking of shipping the van.

Faith...LOL! Thanks!

Hi Pin Wizard,

I work for A Open Computers, if you have the computer's orginal box, pack it back like you received it, if not make sure you use lots of packing when you box it up. If it was me, I would ship it, because you can get insurance for the shipping.

Good Day

We try to save the original boxes and packing material. If we ever move we will drive it down with us.

If you have to fly, I would ship it, make sure it is packed very well and insure it.

It would be a last resort to put it on a moving van.

Kcarp...Thanks! No, I don't have the original box. :(

Floridafam...Thanks, also!

The thought has entered my mind to drive up to Orlando and fly from there. It's the only airport I can get a direct flight to where I'm going. I HATE flying! Two hours as opposed to five is a huge thing to me! Then maybe have the van shipped from there. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...

We've moved many times and have many computers (I think 5 now?). We've always let the movers pack them in their boxes and ship them on their vans and never had a problem. Movers are insured too. Good luck with the move!

I would take the extreme temperatures in a moving truck into consideration...a hot truck can fry the mother board, no..?
I would ship seperately, and insure...movers insurance usually pays pennies on the dollar for damages, read your contracts carefully.

Thank you, Pandy Paws. I wouldn't have thought of that, that's for sure.

I have moved mine myself and had them in the moving van. As far as heat in the moving van, I wouldn't be too concerned unless it broke down in the desert for a few days, because honestly, how do you think the computer got from where it was manufactured to where you bought it? Not in a climate controlled environment, for sure! Seriously, when the movers moved mine from GA to AZ, they wrapped and wrapped each part very well and packed them into boxes that were full of packing material. I think the best thing would be to back up everything you don't want to loose onto CDs or Diskettes, and take them with you. GOod luck with your move, I just did it in December (2600 miles) and am doing it agin in June.

Your computer will be ok. There is nothing in your computer that can't stand 140 degree plus at least that a truck may get up to.

Now, your Vinyl Album collection, all your candles, wax Christmas ornaments - those are the kind of things that WILL melt.

kcarp... AOpen eh? You could get all us DISers a good discounts on some motherboards so we could DIS faster. ;)

Mickeyfan...I'm not going through the desert ;) but who knows which way the truck goes! Thanks for the good luck wishes. Same to you!! Wow! You have 2 moves 6 months apart! Eeeek!

jfulcer... My candles! You have no idea how many candles I have! I better put those in the van. Thanks!

I'd ship it with the Moving company. Any reputable moving company should be insured for anything they pack and ship. So if the computer gets broken somewhere in the move, they'll reimburse you for part or all of the damage. If it goes with you and gets broken, then its on you alone and not the moving company. Make sure you check up on the company through state agencies and references B4 you hire them though.

HTH

Pin Wizard, make sure you give an itemized list of your most valuable possessions (with values) to the moving company prior to your move. Keep a copy for yourself that they've signed. If you don't itemize, loss is based on weight and the value is very low. If you itemize, you have a much better chance of getting recompense for any losses.

I started thinking about this... and think that it might be a good idea for you to remove your hardrive from the computer and tote it along with you for the move. This is for two things. First no one can steal it or the information if you have financial records on it. Second, just in case they actually do throw your things around it won't be able to be damaged and become unreadable. I know most would think that this is unreasonable, but I have seen a lot of fried hardrives from mistreatment! Always pays to be careful!

I would give it no extra care, I allways pound on the side of mine anyway
