Moving tickets when you don't have the new date yet...

We have tickets for a trip soon, but after watching videos of current conditions everyone wants to push the trip off "until things get back to normal." Obviously there's no way to know when that will be. Can we 'bank' the tickets somehow or do I have to pick some date in the future and switch to that specific date?
 
You don't need to push the tickets out, but you can. I'd probably pick a date that is priced as close to my current tickets as possible so as not to pay much more. If you just let them expire, they will work as a credit towards new dates once you have a future visit planned.
 
You do not have to switch to a date. I would just let the tickets expire and wait until I had a definite date. Be sure to note the ticket numbers. They will disappear from being visible in your MDE account after a while. I would definitely not switch to a more expensive date. The date you first switch to may wind up being more expensive than the date you eventually go. You would have paid the extra for nothing.

Edit to add: I would also not switch to a less expensive date. That would mean getting credit for the less expensive date when you switched again. When you do decide on your definite date, call Disney, tell them you have unused tickets in your account, and ask that the purchase price of those tickets be applied to the tickets you are buying for the new date.

Correct.
But, I think that @Tom_E_D meant that if you simply switched to an arbitrary "place-holder" date that had a lower cost, the guest would then have to pay extra if the tickets where finally moved again to a higher-priced date.
(This stuff is so confusing that even trying to discuss it quickly becomes garbled.)

I agree there is no "credit" as a separate item from the ticket. Disney doesn't give money back, either directly or as a park credit (to be used to buy other things). But when buying a newer ticket, you can get a "credit" for the "value" of an unused ticket. This is the "credit" I was referring to.

Here is what I was thinking, using made-up prices and dates. OP has ticket for April that cost $135 that he/she isn't going to use. OP uses the $135 value of that ticket to buy a ticket for a day in September that is less expensive ($125), even though he/she really doesn't expect to go in September. OP doesn't go in September and goes in December instead on a day that costs $135. If I understand the rules correctly, OP would only get credit for $125, the value of the September ticket, when buying the December ticket. He/she would have to pay another $10, even though his/her original April ticket cost $135. In the more expensive ticket case, substitute $155 for the cost of the September day. OP would have to pay $20 to change the date from April to September ($155-135=$20). Then when making the switch to the cheaper December date, he/she would not get that $20 back. So, there is a potential disadvantage to switching to either a less expensive or a more expensive date as a placeholder date. In general, it is better to wait until you decide what date you really want to go. Of course, you no longer can wait until the last minute without the risk of being unable to get a park reservation. But that's a different issue.
