Moving...New Question...

:surfweb:When I have to move my desktop computer, once I unplug it, will I lose anything? :confused3I don't have too much important stuff on here, not a bill payer, just shop and have my pictures but those are also on separate CD's, kept safely. But I am concercned about the music on my windows media player, even though I have all those cd's as well, I'd hate to have to put them back on again. :scared1:Ideas.Also, since I just spent my weekend doing 13 years of shredding papers, I came across a check from Dell for over a hundred bucks. But it's over a year old, what are my chances of getting a replacement from them. :confused3

You'll be fine as long as you shut it off properly before hand.

I did a cross-town move (well, technically I moved towns, but my two places were 5 miles apart.) Thankfully I was going from an apartment to owning, so I had a 2 week overlap. I took a carload every night of dishes, etc. instead of packing everything in boxes. Saved a ton on boxes. If you're just moving across town, as someone else said, don't pack up your clothes, just throw them in your car and move them. Unpack them when you get there, it'll save a lot of time.

Twice a year I go through my clothes, one time it's my dresser, the other is my closet. Yesterday I did my closet and got rid of everything I haven't worn in the past year. (Got rid of=donate.) If you haven't done this in a long time, I suggest starting now. I do it yearly and it still took me all afternoon to just get through my closet. Old underwear? Toss it, it's no good. Don't buy ANY new clothes until you move into your new place. If it doesn't fit, GET RID OF IT. That's my worst habit, and I'm sure most females can agree. We hang onto things because we think, "well if I lose 5 pounds, it'll fit!" No, it won't. Luckily I was in the right mood yesterday, I had stuff in my closet from HIGH SCHOOL! :lmao: I went "Oh who am I kidding?" And put it in the toss pile. (Unfortunately I did that last year right before I moved and then went and lost 30 pounds quickly due to a medication. Luckily I didn't donate things right away because I didn't have anything in my closet that fit :rotfl: I've put 10 pounds back on, so I had to get rid of that stuff again...now it really doesn't fit!!) Long story short...don't bother to move that stuff, just donate it now!

Thats a good idea, kind of like an overnight bag.

That reminds me...we moved once over New Years. Our truck got "lost" for 3 days...it was a bad bad bad time :sad2: I know you're getting your family's help, but for anyone reading this that's using a professional company, prepare for the unexpected. Pack an overnight bag with an extra set of clothes!!

Thank goodness for us, this move is only across the city. About 10 miles or so. But I also see your point, if this were to be a cross country move, then I would sell EVERYTHING. :cool2:

If you would sell it all for a cross-country move, why not sell most of it for a cross town move?

If you have 13 years worth of stuff, may I make the suggestion that you trash, donate, or keep every item in your home. Purge, purge and purge some more.

We have been married 40 years, moved 19 times. We have purged and purged and purged. Because the last cross-country move was on us, if we hadn't used it in the last 2 years, (unless it was a historical family keepsake) out it went. SO WONDRFUL when I was done!!!

Go through your stuff. If you haven't used it, get rid of it! It doesn't matter how far you are moving. IMO, we all have too much stuff.....including me after all the purging!

WOW! Thanks again everyone for all the good advice. We did actually go to a liquor store this past weekend and get some boxes. But still clearing stuff out as I went and made a donation today before work. Good to know I won't be killing my computer, mainly losing all my songs. Hate to have to download all those again. :surfweb:

I agree with the purging.. If you have the time, it's a great opportunity to unload things you haven't used or will never use again..

Once you have done that, pack all "like" things together and label, label, label!! It's so much easier to unpack if you know exactly what is in every box, tote, suitcase, or whatever..

Moving always seems like an overwhelming task, but if you break it up into sorting and packing a little each day it won't be nearly as tiring - or stressful..

Good luck with the move - and I hope you enjoy your new place! :goodvibes

I've been doing the backwards hanger trip that Peter from Clean Sweep mentioned on Oprah, I believe. You put all your clothes in your closet on the hanger, putting the hangers backwards, and then everytime you wear something you and you put it back in the closet on the hanger you hang it the right way. Then at the end of 6 mos or a year, whatever, all the clothes that are still backwards need to go. You obviously haven't worn them. :rotfl:
