Just got back, what a great movie!!! I've always loved Sandra Bullock as an actress and she was wonderful in this one (and of course, Tim McGraw isn't so bad to look at and he's also a pretty good actor!!).

As far as the other black kid who was with him. I think that he became part of the gang that was in his neighborhoods. I remember the newspapers at the end saying something about an upcoming sport star killed in a shoot out.
