Now that disney has what i believe(from coming attractions) to be a very good movie on there hands"Miracle" about the 1980 gold winning USA hockey team it is time to make our predications for opening weekend.
I have heard no rumors on what the take is estimated to be or hoped for but i will start out with a estimate of 30 million.
Just what are you thoughts and predications on this disney film and rumored money for opening weekend??

I think "Miracle" will do very well this weekend, particularly because there's not a lot opening against it. It's a patriotic, based-on-a-true-story, tale of the underdogs winning the gold. What can be bad? :D People who have seen the sneak previews have said that it's predictable and a little sappy, but I think you get that from the trailer. If you look at the audience of today, you have a nice mix of people who remember watching those Olympics on TV vs. the people who don't know the story at all and will be caught up in the "will they or won't they" tension. There's no reason why this shouldn't open on top. I'd say $30 mill is a fair estimate.

I was surprised a movie about a dead racehorse did so well.

This one is tough to call. It is opening during a dead zone time of year- that's a plus, but it's also kind of a stale story with the exception of the passing of Herb Brooks. I like Kurt being in the movie, adds a nostalgic Disney aura to the flick. This isn't a movie I would pay theater prices to see, but I don't go to a lot of movies anyway.

Opening weekend: 26 mil
Total: 95 mil

I agree with the Norseman above, it will be a rental for us.

I'm sure it will do really well once it hits "The Wonderfull World of Disney" show. It seems like a decent movie that really belongs on the show like in the old days with "Charlie the Lonsome Cougar".

I'm sure "Miracle II" will be just around the bend though. ;)

Im also glad to see Kurt Russell in the movie as i like him as a actor.
This has been a weak year in regards to new movies since Christmas Day and this is a movie im really looking forward to seeing and nice too see disney involved in a uplifting movie and not some stupid family comedy that they seem to like to do!!!
Anyone know how much it cost to make this movie??
And their is nothing stale at all about the US beating the russians and winning a gold medal in Hockey!!!!

Yeah, I guess stale was a poor choice of words. What I mean is that it's been done already in made - for - tv type movies, several SI stories through the years, Al Micheals "do you believe..." mantra ued for many lessewr occasions. Things like that.

I have also seen different shows on epsn etc, but i think the movie will have a different take on it and be longer than the 1 hr shows ive seen which ends up being alot less once you add in all the commercials.

I have a sense that this movie will do pretty well at the box office. There doesn't seem to be much going on right now so the competition is pretty minimal. I expect it to take top honors this weekend and follow up with a successful run.

Opening 28 mil
Total 102 mil

It kind of depends on how you felt about those Olymipcs. I remember skipping class in college to stay home and watch the medal games, but then ... I was living in Wisconsin at the time and hockey was a big deal. And once the US hit the medal round, it was hockey fever all over campus. I remember Jim Craig skating around the rink looking for his dad, and Mike Eruzione motioning all of the players to come up onto the podium to join him. Those are big "TV moments" for me, and for a lot of people I knew. So for those folks, it's the whole "reliving a moment in time" thing.

You know ... we all flocked to "JFK" and "Titanic" and "Seabiscuit" and other films that were based on true events. You go in knowing how it's going to end; what you want to see is how they tell the story. The story of the US Hockey team has only been dramatized once -- in a fairly mundane TV movie starring Karl Malden. So it's not like this is version 12.5 or something. I, personally, can't WAIT to see it!

You didn't LIKE the dead president / dead immigrants / dead horse movies? :earsboy:

Being a big Wisc. Badger hockey fan it was great see Wisc. alums do a great job and that was excellant, but only part of it. It was a david beating goliath situtation as the us college members beat the hated/professional russian players than went on from that without a let down to win the gold medal. It was a story that would have been wirtten by hollywood but in fact did happen.
As for peole seeing movies based on true events, that has little to do with the marketability of a movie, or did LOTR really happen???

It's been long time since I went to a movie that people clapped at the end. The movie was very good (senior in high school 1980) I remember it like yesterday. However my eight year daughter was bored out of her mind. Great movie for adults...but not so sure about kids.

boxofficemojo.com is reporting a weekend estimate for Miracle of
$19,443,000.

Short of my expectations, but with all the good reviews, it may have a small drop for next weekend and some staying power.

Anything of note coming out next weekend or will Barbershop II and Miracle be able to "run the show"?
