Motion Sickness Remedies?(slightly OT)

Thanks again gang for all the helpful suggestions!

Unfortunately, ginger is a no go for me. Gingerale has always made me even more sick to the stomach for some reason. My grandmother used to try and use it to settle my stomach when I was sick as a child. Nope, made me run for the nearest trashbin instead. I had actually tried ginger supplements back in high school because I had some nausea issues. That lasted a week before I realized they were making me feel worse.

I'd love to try that 'watch', because it seems like it might really work. But it's just too steep of a price, and I doubt insurance will cover any of it.

Maybe I'll talk to my doc before I go. I have a followup for my hypertension in November, but it wouldn't hurt to call him and see what wouldn't interfere with my meds. I'm very leery of putting any type of medicine in my body unless absolutely necessary. But this might call for it! lol

Thanks again everyone :)

We took ginger tablets that looked sort of like an aspirin. No taste. :thumbsup2

If you do go to the doctor, ask about patches. The captain of the boat I was on said I wouldn't be sick if I'd had one. He said pretty much everything else was inferior. There was a patch stuck under a table he told me about, but I didn't go get it--someone else's seemed too gross. Even grosser than my position as "rail warrior" of the trip. He said they were like 30 bucks a patch, but worth it. I have a friend who gets sick on bush flights, and she said they made a huge difference for her.

Ask your doctor about meclizine that an earlier posted suggested! My husband calls them my miracle pills! I have horrible motion sickness and the kids can spin me in the tea cups with no problems while at Disney. I seriously can't even fly without getting sick unless I take it! I take one at each meal time and I am good to go. I rarely take any medications because my body is overly sensitive to medications but I do not feel any side effects with meclizine. They keep it behind the counter at Target so you do have to ask the pharmacist but it is dirt cheap! Good luck!

This is what I took last weekend. It has worked for me in the past on calm fishing trips (I usually puke one time on it, and then I'm fine). But it didn't work nearly well enough for rough waters! Never again . . .

I get motion sickness as well, but have never had problems flying. Being sick for two days after a flight might be due to something else. You sound really anxious; anxiety might be your real problem. I suggest you consult your physician before your trip. A different type of medication rather than one for motion sickness might be more appropriate.

I'm thinking along these lines. Even though you mentioned turbulence, being sick for two days after just seems due to something else entirely. I am ridiculously prone to motion sickness -- cars, amusement park rides, etc. -- but have flown many many times and have never gotten motion sick then.

If it truly is motion sickness, I'm a huge believer in Bonine (aka meclizine aka "non-drowsy dramamine") It's over the counter, and seems to have very few side effects. (I've never had ANY side effects.)

Good luck! :goodvibes

I have HBP & my doctor approved the patch for a 2 week cruise. Each is good for about 3 days. There was only 1 bad day on the entire trip (when the captain was obviously pushing it in rough waters) but I took a nap & was OK. I even did fine on a helicopter ride which normally would have left me a nauseated mess.
I will NEVER, EVER fly or cruise again without the patch. They were worth every penny.

Doesn't Cracker Barrel sell Ginger gum? Probably wouldn't be strong enough to head off motion sickness though.

I did a quick search though and found some Sea Band brand at Drugstore.com. I am going to stock up on some of the stuff recommended here....and now some ginger gum LOL

I'm not sure about Cracker Barrel, but I bought some at Walgreens. It was right next to the Sea-Bands and made by the same company. I tried the Sea-Band/gum combo at an amusement park the other day and it didn't work. I may have had one of the bands too low on my wrist, so I'm going to try again with just the bands, then chew the gum if I need it. OR...I'll just break down and buy one of those pricey shock bands, lol!

I have not read all the posts thus far but I can recommend Bonine. It is over the counter. Of course talk to your doctor about any drug interactions. This is taken by many flight attendants and was actually recommended for my ex by a friend that is a flight attendant. He would get sick every time we flew. He started taking Bonine before each flight and no more sickness. He even managed a flight from the east coast to the west coast with no problems. Hope you find something that works, I know first hand how bad motion sickness can be.

Ginger! :goodvibes It was a Godsend on cruises for both DS and me.

This was on Mythbusters and I can say that for DH it really works. (Thanks to those 1000 mile roadtrips in my youth, I am immune to any sort of motion sickness.) It also helps with any type of nausea.

Try Sea Bands. They are these bands that go in your wrist the push on a specific pressure point on your wrist. Got mine at Walgreens and helped on my cruise.

This! They work wonders! I get extremely car and sea sick & the bands are the only thing that work.

My pharmacist recommended ginger cookies when we took our first cruise. We ate those and never had any sickness. He swore they worked just as good as the sea bands or better. We didn't have any problems. Now my hubby ended up with delayed motion sickness after our first cruise and then he did have to get a prescription and he missed work. After our second cruise, no problem.

I'm going to add in my vote for Ginger.

We grew up around boats and I don't have issues but all of our friends did! We just kept packing Ginger Snaps (make sure GINGER is an actual ingredient) and Ginger Ale and it helped out so many people.

Oddly enough, on long car trips, I can't be in the backseat long or I get ill. I take my Ginger Cookies with me just to be safe.

If you have a Christmas Tree Shoppe close by, head over there for Ginger Candy. Usually found in the front of the store. They have an assortment of hard candies in cellophane bags. That's where I found the ginger ones that I take when my meds make me nauseous. They also sell the ANNA'S Ginger cookies which are thin wafer cookies. They are usually found at the back of the store in the food section.

My son gets car sick on any ride over 15 miles. He doesn't like the taste of ginger or peppermint and the candies never worked for him (he also wouldn't wear the bands). The pharmacist at Target recommended Rugby's Travel Sickness medicine (you have to ask for it). He said to give him half a chewable tablet at night (it works 24 hours) and it worked great! He could ride all the rides at Disney and there was no sleepy or druggy feeling.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the ginger. I'm picking some up tomorrow for our upcoming trip.....:)
