Motion sickness patch?

Have any of you tried getting the prescription patch for motion sickness to use during your Disney trip? I love rides, but get really sick from spinning anything, anything that goes backwards or sideways. I have used the patch for a cruise, for long car trips, and for flying. Does anyone have experience with it for rides, etc?

:teacher:

I tried it in the past, but for some reason it just did not work that well for me. :confused3 I have thought about trying it again though, cause I really hate missing out on some of my favorite rides because my motion sickness is getting worse with age.

Also don't forget that in the heat sometimes those patches can irritate your skin.

Good Luck!

I did - I also take ginger tablets - the patch helped, but you have to put it on before you get in the heat and humidity... mine kept falling off the first day, after that, no problems!!

In my experience as a licensed Pharmacy tech and pharmacy student the patches work really well for some people and not at all for others. Talk to your MD and get some to try on say a road trip or trip to a local amusement park. My mother once got these for her upcoming cruise she decided to try them ahead of time on a flight to Washington DC. She had a rare but serious allergic reaction to them and was sick in DC for two days. Obviously she would have rather been motion sick for a few hours rather than a few days. Like I said that is rare but you also don't want to be stuck in WDW with patches that just plain don't work. Also Check out the ginger capsule thread going on this board for an alternative.

I've used the motion sickness patch since our first trip in 1990 (except for a year when they stopped making them). I get car sick very easily without the patch and find I can ride the Disney buses, monorail, roller coasters, and most everything else except the Teacups in MK with the patch. I do get dry mouth but just drink plenty of water. I also notice some slight blurring of vision after wearing them a few days, but that is only with the small print on the menues, etc. The patch has allowed me to do more than I otherwise would have been able to do and it is easy...just put one on three or four hours before my flight then change it once every 3 days.

:goodvibes Thank you so much for the insight! I have used the scolpamine (sp?) before. So I know I won't have a reaction to it (or I should say I probaby won't). It worked great for me on our cruise and on a trip to Sedona, Arizona up and down and around the mountains. I think I will try it for the WDW trip. I'll also take my meclazine with me, and maybe grab some ginger pills (although I hate the taste of ginger...not looking forward to the ginger burps...).

Does anyone have the withdrawl symptoms after taking off the patch? How do you avoid that? Anyone?

according to the US pharmaceutical drug index there can be withdrawl sypmtoms with an abrupt stop. Typically this is long term use not a few days worth. If you use your patch for the 3 days then just not put another on and you have only been wearing them for a week or so you should be fine but talk to your doctor about it when you get the prescription.

PS there are also several cautions about wearing them in hot environments. They can suppress sweat production making you overheat faster. FYI

i'll post here in addition to my thread - does this help for people with motion sickness due to a past inner ear infection (i'm assuming that's why she gets sick)? is all motion sickness the same (and/or "cured" the same)?

I'm not sure "why" I get motion sickness. It's not because of ear problems. I used to be the daredevil who'd ride anything. I'd jump back on the ride as soon as I got off. After I had kids, I started getting car sick, motion sick from rides, etc. It has something to do with my peripheral vision. When I see the world go by but can't focus on the horizon, I get really pukey and headache-y. Meclazine does the trip for 1 day type things. I could probably get by with taking it every day. I just know that the patch worked on my cruise and it is very convenient. :hourglass
