I just read a trip report here on the DIS that says the thermostats at Royal Pacific are "motion activated", can this be true? They stated that the room would get very hot while sleeping, not detecting any motion. Did anyone else have this problem?

All 3 resorts have sensored controls. I have noticed more & more hotel chains are using these, I hate them! I didn't have any problems with the cooling while sleeping. I did have an initial problem with it being very warm from the start & not cooling off. I called star service & I don't know what they did but I never had a problem after that.

We just returned from RP and it was extremely warm at night. We had the thermostat set at 69 and didn't need our blankets.

When I stayed at PBH in July the main thing I noticed about the air sensor was that when you left the room and came back, the room was a little warm and humid.

Once we were in the room (even when sleeping) it cooled off.
I would have to say it never did get as "cool" as it usually gets in a hotel room but that could have more to do with how hot it was outside than the motion sensor!

A freind of mine who stayed a week at RPH bought a cheap osilating (sp) fan.... it did the trick of both cooling and keeping the motion detector on its toes.......

No one said anything..... IE housekeeping

Excellent idea!! Thank you so much Laurabearz for posting this. I was worried it would get to hot at night especially for me, so the oscillating fan idea sounds great. Thanks Again ;)

I'm staying at RPR and I asked about this. Here is what I was told:

There are NO motion sensors tied to the thermostats. You can set the thermostat to the temperature you want and it will stay there until you (or someone else) changes it.

There is a system (not yet fully implemented) that alerts housekeeping to your presence in the room (so they don't disturb you). Maybe that's where the confusion comes from.

I would guess that if anyone had any probloems with temperature in the rooms it was because the thermostat was on the fritz.

Kelly,
I also don't doubt what they told you but I also asked the same question & they told me it was a temp sensor. They even came up and adjusted it. I noticed on this last trip we set it at 70 and every time we returned it was at 74, which was fine but I just set it lower at night & when we left. Maybe they really are for the maids but they don't want us all to know about it! LOL
Speaking of do not distubs....I visited Gaylord Palms & they have light up do not disturb signs at thier doors, kind of like doorbells. I think that's a great idea!

That's actually pretty normal of how the A/C system works. The 74 is the actual temperature -- not your setting. Assuming you got back in the afternoon, it's quite possible that while it was set to cool at 70, it was 74 degrees in your room. It's not a perfect science, and there is no perfect insulation.

Do you mean that's how this particular system works at the resort? At my house I set it at 72 and it cools and stays at 72. seems silly you have to set it 4 degrees cooler to get it cool.

I just got back from RPH and yes they do have motion detectors on their A/C units. I called Star Services and they said they are doing this to be cost efficient and that while out of the room the A/C automatically goes to 74. She also disengaged this for me upon calling so I was able to set my own thermostat as I wanted it. Havent given a trip report yet but all in all this hotel has alot of wrinkles that need to ironed out. I'm sure they will get it together soon though!! Hope this helps.

"Thanks gabylin". What is Star Services and how do you call them while you are at the resort? I would also like our thermostat disengaged during our 3 night stay there. Thanks again for your help!

well I guess that's what explains it being on 74 every time I went back to the room.

Star services is a button on the phone at the RPH and instead of calling Front Desk directly or Housekeeping you push that button and whoever answers takes care of your needs. It was very nice to have that. The lady I spoke with said "Don't worry I'll have the A/C disengaged" and when we came back to the room I was able to keep my thermostat at 68!! It's on the phone on the table.
Good luck.

Just back from the PBH, and we were told that they do have the motion-sensors by the guy who carried our bags up. We were very comfortable the whole time (but I don't like a really cold room anyway.)
