Hee! I think you hit the nail on the head here. Grandma is a meddling busybody who uses backdoor messages to broadcast her lack of confidence in the parents. Obviously Grandma has far bigger problems than an inability to control herself around a federally protected medical record system.

Why not suggest that the OP's MIL voluntarily make a substantial donation to Doctors Without Borders? It would be something she could think back to the next time she's tempted to cross over to the dark side.

The OP has to at least consider her duty to the other patients whose privacy may be violated if a report is not made. Obviously a very difficult decision, and I wish her strength and widsom in making it.

I guess that would be between grandma and dd. I would want to know my dd was on birth control so it wouldn't bother me, but it may bother dd.

Its not any of her business but its not hurting the family for grandma to know either.

You are also right that she should have just asked what she wanted to know. I am glad she is not MY mil, that is for sure.

Grandma has no rights to have private information about the grandkids. Grandma generally has no rights regarding the grandkids, period. Grandma needs to get that through her head. If I caught grandma snooping around to see if dd was on birth control, grandma wouldn't be darkening my door or having any contact whatsoever with dd, period. Of course having your privacy violated by a meddling busybody is hurtful.

And if my MIL lost her job because she was breaking the law, it would not be my responsibility to support her and shield her from the consequences of her actions.
