Mostly wonderful allergy experience

I love to read others' reports, so I'm adding mine in the hopes it helps! My oldest is severely allergic (has history of ana & reacts at very low amounts, e.g. airborne in starbucks) to milk, egg, peanut & mustard.

This is our 3rd time taking her to Disney. It was mostly wonderful, as always! I'll briefly highlight some disappointments before sharing all the great experiences.

Counter service was a let down. Luckily we rarely eat counter service. We missed Divvies this year. We had brought some down bought at our local Wegman's, but part of the thrill is that she's buying cookies. No pizza is safe for her anymore. We make delicious pizza at home that is far better tasting, but for her (again) the thrill is in going to a pizza place and ordering a pizza just like everyone else. That was fun for her to do in the past. Pizza Planet said she could get a salad without the cheese . . . .

And.....now for the wonderful! :yay:

Chefs were overall amazing as always. We mostly eat signature. My husband & I like good food, as do our kids despite their young ages. I can't imagine feeding them a diet of chicken nuggets all week, so we splurge and dine signature for the most part.

Artist Point - no problems. She had her standard: baked fish, roasted potatoes & steamed veggie with fruit cup as an app.

Jiko - awesome as always. The waiter and chef really aimed to please. She had some fish I've never heard of, but she loved it. Great experience there. Plus, she can even eat the bread - yum!!!! Most places it's off limits.

1900 Park Fare (breakfast) - no problems, but anytime we go there and it's not Chef TJ, it's a bit of a let down. He's always so enthusiastic about making safe, tasty food. This chef (Kelly? Kim?) didn't seem so excited. She basically asked her what she wanted and brought that. The food was slow to come out. All 3 of our kids eat food that is safe for my oldest while with her because it's just easier. They also are big eaters. With Chef TJ, the amount of food was abundant. Here we had to wait a long time for replenishment (hard with a 6, 4, & 1 yr old.) But, my daughter was fed safely, so no complaints.

Be Our Guest - again, a really good experience. The chef & waitress were great, she loved her meal (tilapia, potatoes & broccoli with a fruit cup. You'd think she'd grow fins by the end of the week with all her fish consumption!)

Kouzzina - 1st time here and we LOVED it. Chef came to us before our waitress even got to us, made recommendations for the whole family. Food was incredible as was the service. We'll be back.

Boma (breakfast) - also a 1st time, and fabulous! We loved the chef ( I need to write down there names!) He seemed truly excited to be making food for her, was very friendly, food came out fast, was great. He even sent us with bonus Enjoy Life cookies. We'll be back here, too.

Babycakes - we were a boatride away. Dangerous. It was much tastier than I remember last yr. We ate here most days for a treat. I'm so happy they opened up a Disney location. Last yr I thought they were a little dry, but liked them for the fact that my daughter could eat at a real bakery. This year, I liked them because they were awesome (esp the choc brownie cupcake with mocha icing - YUM!)

While, I'm bummed about the CS changes, Disney chefs know how to make a great experience for a kid who rarely gets to eat out.

Also, we drive down. We ate at two restaurants, both Outbacks and both were great. Bayside in Jacksonville, FL, and one in Florence, SC (exit 140a I believe.) I'd recommend both.

Glad you had a lot of great meals! I've been wanting to try Artist Point and Kouzzina.

I've never eaten at Pizza Planet. Just curious, what changed that she was no longer able to get a pizza here when she was before?

It's the switch to Udi's as their "allergy" crust. Gluten free does her no good, esp when they add in egg. There was also a milk problem, but I'm not clear what it was.

LOL at the salad without cheese- just because for an adult a lot of times that is doable, but I would NEVER expect that I could stand in a pizza place and hand a little kid a salad without them getting completely bummed out.

We felt the same way about CS just being a huge let-down. With our son we basically walked in to a place and they could do one thing which was usually not all that exciting. (like the salad at a pizza shop) We also kept finding that while for the average person CS can save a lot of time over TS, it seemed to take so long by the time we waited to order and waited for the food that a lot of times TS was quicker.

We liked Kouzzina enough it was part of our decision to go back to Yacht Club so we could walk there.

That's what we found time wise as well. For us, doing CS was more because of cost than because of time. We were in rush to get anywhere so we could have done 2 TS per day time wise but cost wise it was just too much.

Our TS meals all averaged about 90 mins (a couple were longer) and CS meals were usually about an hour total. I personally don't have any problem waiting that long for my food but I'm older so it worked out fine for us. I would order my food first and then my parents would order theirs once I had gotten mine. That way they weren't waiting around forever with cold food while I was waiting for mine.

I think a lot of my experiences have been different than some others posted on here because of the difference between kid and adult. I do get bummed when I can't have something (I mean seriously....who doesn't!) but I completely understand and my expectations are that as long as there is something safe (I don't care how exciting it is) I am happy. We brought food with us this trip because there are no safe treats in Disney for me except for enjoy life cookies and rocky mountain popcorn (unfortunately no babycakesnyc). With kids, it's completely understandable to want them to be able to eat the same things as other kids do which can be very difficult to make happen sometimes and it's more difficult for kids to see others eating something like pizza or Mac and cheese and not be able to have the same thing especially if it can be made safe at home.
I for one though am extremely grateful for those allergy chicken tenders they have at CS places....those made my trip!! Haha

Bummer! Their normal crust wasn't safe? The reason I ask is because we stopped at Pizzafari in AK back in Feb 2010 to ask if they could do a cheeseless pizza (DS is milk, egg, peanut allergic). A really nice manager went through the book with me and they were able to use the regular crust, an "allergy" sauce (the regular one had parmesan in it I think), pepperoni, and they even had Vegan Gourmet Soy Mozzerella. My DS prefers cheeseless to soy cheese, but either way he was able to have a great pizza. I always figured I'd be able to get something similar at Pizza Planet.

They said there was no pizza that would be safe for her, so I guess the normal one was out as well.
