Most likely have to cancel my cruise on points, best options?

I booked a 7 might Med cruise for this coming August using 2010 banked points and 2011 points. Well, all of a sudden we are undermanned and I will probably be deployed. I have a March use year, so I know the 2010 points have to be booked by Oct 31 and used by Feb 29 2012. Can the 2011 points be banked? I know they stay reservation points. Any chance I will be able to do anything with these points trying to book 4-6 out, or should I think about canceling and re-booking now?

My other option is to just by the trip insurance on points from Disney and hope for the best. Can some one give me a quick run down on how that works or point me to a thread on it? TIA.

Well, these are cruise points now and you can't use them at DVC any more. You might be able to use them for non-DVC Disney lodging, but I'm not sure. Your 2011 points cannot be banked any more. They are no longer DVC points but reservation points. All you can do is try to move to another cruise date.

If you get the insurance, you need to make sure you read the fine print carefully because even with the insurance, you might not be reimbursed for the points (usually $5 a point).

They are reservation points, there is no such thing as cruise points. They are good for DCL, Disney collection and RCI trades.

Wow! I'm sorry you are in this position, thank you for your service to our country.

If you cancel those points are all reservation points in your '11 UY. Without making a committment, why don't you call MS and see what the options are with those points.

Good luck. I do hope you find a satisfactory solution.

PS. Yes, read the fine print on the insurance, because you didn't buy it when you booked, there may be limits on what is covered.

They cannot be used for RCI Trades either, since they need to be able to be used for a reservation at a DVC resort to participate in the World Passport Collection.

They may be used for Disney Collection (which includes DCL and Disney Non-DVC resorts), Concierge Collection and Adventurer Collection.

Darn, oh well, I'm going to try to keep my reservation. Just fearful I'll have to cancel. I'm mainly wondering about the non-DVC options at WDW and if I will have much of a problem using my points at any of the hotels a few months out?

You should be able to find something available in a non-DVC resort a few months out. Since the points would already be in "Reservation Status" you can even make a reservation for use within the last 4 months of your Use Year. They will all expire on February 29, 2012 but may be used anytime before that date (if you have to cancel).

Thank you for your service! I hope you are able to use the cruise, but if not, I'm sure you will find opportunity to still use the points.

Good luck!
