More sad veterinary news

I am so sorry. We JUST went thru this same scenario with our 12 yo mutt. Very aggressive tumor on her shoulder. Diagnosed at Thanksgiving, and by the end of Jan. it was so big we had it removed. Pathology showed a very aggressive form of spindle cell carcinoma. Surgery was Jan. 30th, by April the tumor was back and even bigger than before. She was unable to move anymore so on April 21 we had to make that awful decision.

Many hugs for you and I am hoping it's not as aggressive as they think.

Well Dh took it better than I thought...I didn't have to sedate him, but he was beyond crushed. We cried, we hugged her, we hugged each other. He thinks it may be worth taking her to an oncologist to at least confirm the vet's suspicion, after all, what if it ISN'T? Shot in the dark perhaps, but she's our baby. If it is cancer then we just love her and keep her happy and comfortable as long as possible.

It's so heart breaking to see him cry.

If you recall, we found a blue-tick coonhound a few weeks ago. She wandered into our yard and stayed. We just bought her a tag this past weekend, making her officially ours, after a few weeks of fruitless and begrudging "searching" for her owners). Sweetest lil' thing too. I prayed a lot today...Jesus said he sent Lilly-Belle (the hound) to us to ease the eventual passing of Janky.

I don't doubt that.

I'm sorry to hear about your baby. My Chocolate lab had the same thing happen to her when she was 10. Our vet sent us to MSU to be checked and they were able to remove a portion of her gums/jaws, no follow chemo or radiation was needed. She lived for another 3 1/2 years. I'm so glad we had the surgery. I will pray that they can help your baby.

We are currently dealing with cancer in my 5yr old Chocolate lab. She has a tumor in her skull and she cannot be treated. She was diagnosed in March and we are so happy she is still with us. She had a quick progression of symptoms right after being diagnosed, but they seem to have leveled off. We are thankful for every day we are have.

OP, many many hugs to you and your family. I understand the feeling, we had to put our boxer down with pretty much the same diagnosis. We did have 6 more months with him but towards the end it was just horrible. We selfeshly waited probably two days longer than we should have. He used to wait for the kids in the morning to go out the front door to school, that Monday morning he never left his chair in the living room. I pretty much knew it was time. He had started to barely eat by that point, and anything he would eat was soft food.

We now are dealing with a tumor on our boxer girl, 10, spine. It can not be treated. In June we were given the 6-12 months scenerio again. So far she is doing well, has not lost any ability to use her legs ect. We are hoping for a few more months but know this time we will not wait if it appears it is time.

God bless you and you are right your new dog was sent to help you through. 2 weeks after Bruiser passed away, we got Ginger through a marine who was being deployed and needed someone to take her. We thought it was just for awhile...she has been here ever since. When my dh brought her home, she was sitting int he front seat of the van like she belonged there. And so she did, for the last 8 years she has definitely belonged here!

I am so sorry. We lost Gracie in the fall to Osteosarcoma in her leg, and a quick spreading cancer with our sweet Lexie the year before. We still have sweet Winnie with us now.
It just hurts so much I know to know they will soon not be with us. And we can't change it. And it sucks. I'd get the 2nd opinion too and know you'll do the right thing when its time. It absolutely broke my heart both times and I still grieve, but the hole fills in just alittle with time. I am sending warm thoughts and I'd hug you if I could. :grouphug:

I am so sorry about Janky

Our little Bichon is our baby so I completely understand and don't know what I would do. Perhaps as another poster said there may be something that is non instrusive to help slow it down? I will keep you and hubby in my prayers.

I'm sorry to hear this. :sad1: You have had a rough year.

I've lost two of my dogs to cancer. The first had a bone tumor. We kept him comfortable and spoiled him rotten until the day came when we had to let him go. We had a vet come to the house and put him to sleep there. The second dog with cancer had multiple spindle cell tumors we removed surgically, but eventually they metastasized to her brain. There was nothing we could do at that point, but the timing was awful as I was going through chemo myself and it was her whose chest I cried into many nights. She was my baby, and losing her was incredibly painful. I feel for your husband.

I think your new dog did come into your life to help soften the blow. Funny how that happens sometimes, isnt' it? :grouphug:

I would definitely go to the oncologist. Has it been biopsied? I have seen some very weird looking oral epulis that resembled a tumor but came back benign.

Not yet. Only found out about the tumor yesterday. Our vet is going to write us a referral to the oncologist. She drew out some fluid with a needle and looked at it under the microscope and said the way the cells looked, the large number of them and the ease with which she was able to draw it out pointed at a malignant tumor.

Jennasis...  to you and DH, and I hope things turn out better than they sound right now. My thoughts are with you both and Janky too!

Awww, what a beautiful doggie. I'm so sorry. :grouphug:
