Before the year is over, I will be doing some upgrades in my kitchen. I am pretty well planning to sell this house in 4 or 5 yrs, so keep that in mind.

I need new countertops, which I have already decided will be laminate. I need ideas on colors, patterns if any, and edge treatments. Cabinets are walnut and will stay that color. Sink: stainless or white. Appliances are or will be new and are white. Current sink is stainless, but finish is worn and needs replacing.

Backsplash materials and colors?

Floor: sheet vinyl or vinyl tiles? Color?

I am leaning toward a soft green color for the walls. The room gets a LOT of sun in the afternoon. To the point of having to keep the blinds closed. So a cool color scheme would be OK, I think.

So give me some ideas that you would like to see in a house you were thinking of buying.

Here is a site that is really helpful...

We just finished our remodel this past year. That Kitchens Forum was a great help, lots of great people there. If you scroll down some on that site you will see a link that says, "Gallery"... if you click there, that is where everyone posts pictures of their completed kitchens. Have a look see...!!

It might be helpful for you to go to a home depot or lowe's to get some countertop samples and paint samples. That way you can see how everything would look in your kitchen with the existing cabinets. My kitchen is a lime green (well not lime but bright), cabinets are a light wood color and my countertops are laminate black with glitter specks. I think it all depends on what looks best. I have light white vinyl flooring sheets but if I would redo my kitchen I would probably go with real tile instead of fake tile especially if I were looking for upgrades.

I love the flooring in your kitchen it looks so good!

THS is a great website! I used it a lot during my kitchen remodel too. My remodel is on there somewhere, although it's probably deeply buried by now!

OP, if you're planning on selling in the next 4-5 years, I'd try to keep the hard surfaces as neutral as possible and use your paint as your color. As for the flooring, I would think that sheet vinyl would be the better choice. I guess ceramic tile is out? That would be an even better choice.

Are you doing new appliances? If so, I'd go for stainless steel and get another SS sink. Otherwise, you can always go with the white. Personally, I'd rather see a scratched up SS sink, than a scratched up porcelain sink. Those look really bad when they get worn. If I were going to go with a colored sink, I'd spring for cast iron.

Don't forget new hardware for your existing cabinets either. I found great knobs and pulls on eBay of all places. I was also able to find really great prices on new lighting.

Under $10K... wow... I had to go back and take another look! You did a fabulous job! Just goes to show, a kitchen re-do doesn't have to cost a fortune!

Randi... there's some inspiration for ya!

I love my stainless sink with my white appliances. I also have lamenate counters top but I have ceramic edging on the counters and back splash. My walls are white. I change out my towel and counter top decorations for most of my color.
