Kataneh Vahdani for California Institute of the Arts
"Filmic Mickey"
California Institute of the Arts
KATANEH VAHDANI was born in Iran, a country with an extensive art history. She feels very fortunate to have the opportunity to study art in the U.S. since 2000. Kataneh enrolled in the California Institute of the Arts (CAL ARTS) in 2001 and has found a lively and creative niche in the character animation program. Her goal is to make a difference in the world and she is trying to reach that through her art.
CAL ARTS was incorporated in 1961 as California Institute of the Arts, the first degree-granting institution of higher learning in the U.S. created specifically for students of both the visual and the performing arts. The Institute was established through the vision and generosity of Walt and Roy Disney and the merger of two professional schools, the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music (founded 1883) and the Chouinard Art Institute (founded 1921). In 1971, Cal Arts moved to its permanent site in Valencia, California. Faculty artists actively pursue their own art making while acting as mentors and colleagues with students. Alumni include award-winning filmmakers, performers and artists whose works continue to shape and redefine the creative future.

"Mickey Celebrates Our Freedom"
Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles
PAUL WENZEL is a Disney artist who created thousands of illustrations for motion picture advertising and merchandising during his 42-year career with The Walt Disney Company. "Discovered" by a Disney animation producer who admired Paul's art displayed in his father's hardware store, he hoped to become an animator. As there was no opening, he instead joined the Motion Picture Advertising group. His film-advertising work includes movie posters for more than 80 films, including the Academy Award-winning Mary Poppins (1964). Paul also created the art for more than a dozen of The Walt Disney Company's official Christmas cards. His portrait of Walt Disney appeared on a 1968 United States postage stamp.
Paul shows his admiration for the American flag through "Mickey Celebrates Our Freedom."
David Willardson
"Flying Colors #3"
Make-A-Wish® Foundation
DAVID WILLARDSON is among the most renowned airbrush artists in America. After graduating from Los Angeles Art Center, David's passion for excellence and his natural creativity led to his creation of internationally known images such as the Raiders of the Los Ark movie logo and the classic American Graffiti car hop. David was commissioned to paint movie posters for Disney's animated features including The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and The Lion King. He has created artwork featuring Disney characters for more than 15 years including originals, limited edition plates and works on paper. WYLAND is the most influential marine life artist of our time. With more than 78 monumental ocean murals, Wyland's art has transported many into nature's underwater kingdom. The mission of this painter, sculptor, writer and underwater photographer is to inspire an entire generation to appreciate the beauty of our world's oceans. As a marine life artist whose work has been hailed for its environmental implications by ocean scientists, Wyland bridges the marine world of science and art. Today his art is found in many public and private collections worldwide. He is also founder of the Wyland Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of the world's oceans.
