I am on the Alaskan Cruise on the wonder in late May. My daughter's (7yo) only Alaskan request is to see a moose. I'm just not sure how feasible this is so I'm trying to not get her hopes up. Has anyone seen a moose on an Alaskan cruise or suggest a shore excursion where this might be more possible? I've read thru almost all of the shore excursions and it doesn't seem to be something mentioned. Our ports are Skagway, Juneau and Ketickan. And my husband refuses to do a helicopter tour so that's out. :)

Thanks in advance!

We were on the last sailing in September this pSt year. We did not see any but I have heard reports of them being seen. I would say keep the hope.

It's a matter of luck, really. We've been on 5 Alaskan cruises and we've only seen one moose. He/she was a small (young) moose standing at the side of the road as we passed by on a bus trip from Anchorage to Seward. Bears are also rare. We had to go on a shore excursion at Icy Strait Point for that. Fortunately, bald eagles are more plentiful. Tour guides and bus drivers are helpful at pointing out their nests.

We are doing an excursion in which we should be able to see some bears as well and I'm excited to see the bald eagles. Maybe we'll get lucky!

I didn't see any when I went a few years ago. Our tour guide in Skagway did point out some moose tracks, though.

I believe there is an animal sanctuary in Ketchikan. Maybe they have moose?

I live in an area where moose are quite common - but it still took me over 6 years of living here to finally see one! If you haven't already done so, I'd explain to your daughter that wildlife is unpredictable, so while she might get lucky, it may not happen. The only wildlife I've seen on our Alaska cruises with DCL outside of a paid excursion to see bears, where whales and eagles. But, even if she doesn't see one, at least part of the fun is the excitement of looking and hoping that you are lucky!

We've been to Alaska twice (once on a cruise, once strictly the interior portion) and did see one moose. However, it was deep inside Denali National Park - not somewhere you will be going. I'd try to temper her expectations. While it is possible, it's not very likely. I will throw this out there, though. If your daughter really has a hankering to see a moose (I can't say I blame her, they are magnificent to see in the wild), we have been to Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons numerous times and almost always see moose - usually in the Tetons. Just something to consider for future trips.

For this trip, I wouldn't worry too much. You will see eagles, whales, seals, and possibly bears depending on what excursions you choose. She will have a great time. Alaska is incredible. So much so, we just booked our second Alaskan cruise (and third trip over all).

We didn't see any moose when we went in August of 2014. And as far as the Eagles, we were expecting to see many of them but only saw a few, but they are definitely visible. We did the Neets Bay excursion and saw quite a few bear as the are salmon, it was pretty neat. We were hoping to see brown bears as we frequently see black bears near our home but we only saw black. What a fantastic cruise - you'll love it!!

We actually have Yellowstone plotted out as our next trip so that's good to hear!!

OH wow, I feel so lucky now. BUT we did land and sea on (never again to be sailed by me) Princess. We went in late May/early June and saw a Moose and her calves, a grizzly and her cubs (have pics of both!) and a black bear on the side of the road. Plus, we had great whale sightings, including a pod of orcas! The moose sightings were in Fairbanks and Denali, grizzlies in Denali and the Black Bear was Skagway, we rented a car and drove around. We also saw moose in Juneau. We had a wildlife filled trip, which was especially cool seeing all the babies! I know our captain on the whale watch said we were extremely lucky to see as many whales breaching as we did and then to also see the pod of orcas.

We saw a moose in 2014. We took a private tour from Skagway to Crystal Lake which is near Carcross in the Yukon Territory. My son spotted it while we were driving and the guide pulled over so we could get a better look and some photos. It turned out there were two mooses. Our guide mentioned moose sightings were rare.

We've been to Yellowstone/Grand Teton 3 times and all 3 times we saw Moose in the Grand Teton region including mommas with babies. I love moose. Good luck on your Alaska cruise.

I too did a land and sea on Princess and saw a moose in Denali, but not during the cruise portion where you will be. I also saw one standing by the side of the rode in Estes Park, CO, as we drove by, but that's it for my moose sightings. Good luck!

Well I'm happy to hear that we might see them in Yellowstone. We plan to go in May of 2017 to Yellowstone so hopefully we'll get to see some babies too! Thanks everyone!
