Month of February 2010 - WISH Team Walkers and Runners Training Thread

Jackie? A hilly 5K the day after a 10-miler???? WHat were you thinking? Congrats on teh PR! That is awesome. Now, give your legs a bit of rest. :goodvibes

Deleckideisgn - :welcome: It is not easy to train in cold weather, but I agree with Carrie. I'd rather run outside than on the TM most days. DH, DD19 and I are all running the Indy half too. It will be DD's first half. There's a planned WISH dinner on Friday night, so if you can plan on joining us!

Where is dinner on Fri night? We plan on driving down that morning from MI to pick up our packets. Not sure how late we'll stay in Indy that evening. We're staying at my dad's in Kokomo, then he's driving us down the morning of the mini. This will be our first half, too. :)

Obviously, I WASN'T thinking. (The truth is that I'd never actually seen the 5K course and had no idea the last mile was nothing but hills. When I looked at the elevation chart on the Garmin info I was in shock.) And rest is most definitely on the agenda!

I think Frank/Firedancer has suggested the Old Spaghetti Factory. We haven't set a time yet, but I would guess it wouldn't be too late, maybe 6:00ish? Keep checking the Indy thread as it gets closer. There are a bunch of WISHers doing the race this year.

That was I. I figure as we get closer someone will just make a reservation. Once we decide on a time I can be that guy.

Jen- congrats on the PR. They sure feel wonderful.

After the week I had last week with out server failure and disaster recovery adventures I am getting back to normal. Two 16 hour + days in a week are just not conducive to..well..anything. We learned a lot and managed to engineer some solutions to problems that the software and hardware providers didn't even know existed. I think we will be making a presentation to their development team shortly to try and get their solution running a bit better. It was hard and a week from hell but we managed to impress some important people so I'll take it.

I got out and put in a short run tonight in anticipation of more snow. If it isn't too bad I will get out again tomorrow but if it is I will be on the treadmill again :headache:. The first 5K of the year is this weekend but the real start to the running season up here is March 13th. I am hoping that the weather will let me get some longer runs in before the National on the 20th. As it is I am not going for any kind of PR or anything for that race anyway. I'm sure with the storm we had this weekend there are a lot of people in the northeast quarter of the country with the same problem.

I really want Southwest to post their rates for October because I want to see if I can justify the Wine & Dine. All the overtime last week makes it a little easier :thumbsup2.

Since I'm new to running (or walking/jogging) is the old practice of carbo loading still the norm? Do you incorporate some protein too?

Macaroni grill has a make your own pasta bowl, which I love. I get it with whole wheat ziti, broccoli, mushrooms and pine nuts....all in a spicy marinara. I could add chicken if protein is more of an issue.

I'm actually fantasizing about the dinner after the marathon! :lmao:
I want to reward myself really really well! Has anyone thought about where they plan to eat that evening?

Pre-race for a half or full I have a pasta and chicken combination. I don't really bother with any carbo loading before anything shorter then a half or before a training run shorter than 15.

Are you talking about after a WDW race? I always reward myself with Boma, my favorite restaurant on property. I plan on being there at some point Sunday evening on January 9, 2011.

We ate at Artist Point this year after the marathon. It's our favorite special restaurant, and we knew we could have a glass (or two) of wine plus a fabulous meal. We were seated next to another guy who ran the full and we talked about the race the entire meal!

OMG - it's snowing again! They're predicting we could get another 1-2 feet!:scared1: Now, I get a good workout shoveling all this snow, but there's nowhere to put it! We have piles from the storm last weekend that are 3-4 ft. high. Ugh!

Stopped by my foot doctor's today and picked up a pair of orthotic insoles. Gonna try them out (when the snow goes away) to see if they help with my shin splints.

It's great to read what everyone has been doing.

Hi all!

It's been a bit slow going this past week and a half. I'm guessing tomorrow I'll be able to get to the gym for some play. Kirby Dog took me for a walk today just before the snow started.

Don't forget to post your events on the calendar. I've just added to my list so I'm going to have to check to make sure I've got it all straight on the events calendar here.

Happy training.

Hi WISHers! I have no running to report....I have sick kiddos and my indoor treadmill (I have a junky garage one too) is broken but hopefully that will change soon...

ran my 5k this morning. my "official" time by them was 30:30, but it is a very low-tech race. we didn't have chips. they started the time at "go," but i was about mid-pack. and they wrote down your finish time with a pencil/paper as your crossed. so, not 100% accurate. ;) my nike plus time was right at 30 minutes, which isn't too bad considering the road was flooded in several places. so, i either got in line to go around (which slowed everyone down) or ran through the puddle. i couldn't wait to get warm, dry socks on! ;)

anyway, i wanted to finish in around 30 minutes, and i did that. now, on to a 10k at the end of march!

total miles for february week one: 13.06

Emily! Here you are with your 5K report! I was asking about it on the Triple D thread (come post! :)). BIG Congrats to you on your first 5K!! :thumbsup2

This year my friend and I had our pre-half dinner at Cali Grill -that was fantastic! And then our post-half dinner was at CRT. We thought that would be a fun way to celebrate, and it was!

Boma is my favorite WDW restaurant too...:cloud9: That would be a great post-race meal. What are your favorite dishes there? Mine are the nut-crusted salmon (love the other salmon too), the couscous, and the carrot and ginger soup. And I am a zebra dome fan!

The salmon and couscous are high on my list too. I love the different flavored hummus with that flat cracker-like bread they have. There is very little on that line I don't like. I am not really a zebra dome person but they do have some good desserts.

I don't think I've had the hummus and cracker-bread, I'll have to try them. I do like hummus but there's always so many other things I want to eat there. I always wish I had a bigger stomach when we go there! Not a zebra dome fan! such a shame. JK I know you aren't alone in that regard. One of the other desserts I love are the coffee tart things...don't know the name. Oh, one of the other dishes I love is that white, sort of cream of wheatish stuff with vegetables on it. Oh and those little balls they usually serve over by the meats..wish I knew the names of this stuff. And I've got myself drooling now!

Hi all,

Just came back from alittle XC ski outing at my local park--just went out the back door, put on my skis and off I went. My technique stinks since I don't ever ski more than once or twice a year, but hey--it's a workout!

I like the talk of post-race meals. I didn't do one this year--I wasn't sure what shape I'd be in after the marathon! But I did the WISH dessert reception. If I did pick a celebration meal, I think I might just head over to the Rose and Crown--okay, so it's not the "meal", it's the "beverage"!

Maybe when it gets closer to the race we'll have to set up a Boma meet for Sunday night. :thumbsup2

That would be so fun! But I'll be heading home that day. :( I'll just be there Friday and Saturday nights (same as I did this year). See I would want to have it on Saturday night since I'm doing the half. ;)

We'll have to plan one for then too! :)

I was wondering if you were a Boma fan! You can count me in for that! :thumbsup2

Frank~ you can have a pre-race Boma dinner AND a post-race one! LOL Just stick with the not-so spicy stuff for the first and then go all out for the second.

yummmmm...kalamata olive hummus.
