Month of December - WISH Team Walkers and Runners

I got my 18 in yesterday. Thankfully the temps cooled down some from what we did have and the humidity wasn't too bad. I am happy to say I am not sore today so that is a good sign for the Goofy - I was praying my achilles wouldn't be bothering me when I got out of bed this morning and YEAH they weren't. Sometimes after long runs my achillies don't feel right first thing when I get up. Since they felt fine this morning I am hoping that is a good sign for January since I can't have my achillies popping the morning of the full.

My plan in the next couple weeks is to definately get in a 14 miler next Sunday and maybe a 4 miler on Saturday with my niece. Then the next weekend I want to do a back to back 10 miler and then 20 miler (20 on the 20th - LOL) and then at least a 12 miler and the weekend before the races a back to back 6 and 8. Feeling more confident about this thing than I was a few weeks ago. Its not long now and it will be here.

Glad your feeling more confident Tricia 18 miles :cheer2:

It was cold yesterday down your way, but that wind was strong.

Even though I had been on hiatus of sorts, tonight was a good confirmation to myself that I haven't lost much. Got in about 13 miles. Took the first 11-12 pretty easy and steady, then kicked it into high gear to finish it out. Legs feel great, but feet are pretty sore. Most likely, this won't be my only long run of the week either. Feeling good!

Yes it was chilly but I warmed up quick. How did it go for you yesterday? Did you do the full or the half. I recorded it and watched it last night. Saw quite a few handcranks. They interviewed a guy with no legs who did the half on a special skateboard - which is amazing to realize what he can do. Hope all went well for you.

It was my fastest marathon at 2:02:11 and if I had not fallen off I would have been faster.

The course had two double back on yourself turns wich I can't do in a lean steer, I tried and got stuck in the cones.:lmao:
I also came off in warm up.

Its a nice race and i'll be going again.:thumbsup2

If you still have it look for a crank with bright yellow shoes, black tights and a white top.......thats me!!!!!

I just looked it up Kirstie - wow you came in 2nd for Females. That is awesome. Sorry to hear you fell off but your time was awesome. Glad to hear it was a nice course I may have to think about doing it one of these years. LOL I will have to watch the coverage again and see if I see you.

Syko - Way to go!

Tricia - Congrats agian on 18!

Maura - I have NEVER had a good 18-miler. Never! Have had great 20-milers and great marathons, but the 18 always gets me. Any ocmpleted 18-miler is a great on ein my book. My best guess is that 16 is still not tha tfar from a half. We know we can do that. 18, osunds liek a heck of a long way, but isn't sexy like a 20-miler. Just not pumped for it. Write it off and forget about it. BTW, I'm thinkign that cold had a lot to do with your chay legs. Did you do a cold bath after?

tinmac - I am so sorry. Hope you can get your heart into training in the crunch time.

My 18-miler: It had snowed big time Thursday night. 5" on the ground. not your typical fist snow. We decided just to tough it out and run at home. We had tickets fro SInging CHristmas Tree (amazing) Saturday night and no time to travel anyway. We even decided not to put a car in town for backup. I have teh hardest time ever with the 18-milers adn decided that having a car in town was plannign to fail. At 1 point, I ws so proud of myself. I was doing pretty well and had gone through really tough path conditions and was thrilled I was going to make it. Then I realized I had only done 5 miles and had quite a bit to go. :upsidedow I did keep my "I WILL make it" attitude though and was happy to finish. Time was awful, but for teh conditions, I am just happy we finished.

Last night, the path had melted so we tried it. Shoudl haevknown better. Barely a half mile away when it turned to ice. Got in 2 miles. Unlike some, we just say we tried adn don't hange gears adn head to the gym.

Carrie - hey at least you got your 18 finished. Like you told me there is no need for pretty just to get it done. I don't know how you guys do it with it so cold and snowy. Makes me a little thankful for our cool days - although I hate our weather right now - it should NOT be 83 in December - that is just wrong. I will take some of your cold weather and snow - if even just for a little bit.

Can't believe in just one month we will be at Disney. Its getting close now.

I'm plugging away. I have the 20 miler coming up in a week and a half then it will be taper madness.

timmac, sorry about your situation. I hope that you will find comfort and de-stressing in your running and XTs. Glad to read you got in some good steps to learn that you didn't lose that much.

Kirstie, you did fantasticly in the event. How is the chair now after the event?

I'm thinking I'm finally feeling a bit more human after the LV event and weekend and looking forward to getting to taper madness time. I need some new jeans. Isn't this when the shopping begins?
:rotfl2:

Keep on moving everyone. We can do it!

Hi everyone! We finally got our first dumping of snow - the roads and sidewalks are slowly being cleared. So even though it was tough, I was glad I got out and ran last night. I went to the gym tonight and did a little bit of speed training before my chiro assessment. I got to the gym late so I only got half of it done :( I'll probably stay indoors and run 3 miles on the dreadmill tomorrow evening after training.

Kirstie - Congratulations!! I'm going to check out your link after I'm done posting.

Lily - Good luck on your upcoming 20 miler! I recently bought a pair of Gap 1969 jeans. They're a lot better than the jeans they use to have.

Tricia - I with ya! I can't believe it's already December. The countdown is definitely on!

Carrie - Good job on the 18 miler! I'm impressed with everyone who's able to do these long distances in snow.

timmac - I hope things get better soon :hugs:

Maura - I like your idea of not taking a watch and just getting in the miles.

Have a great night everyone!

My chair....... my DH gave it it's 500 mile service, everything is stripprd off and cleaned. He got so much muck out of the underneath dampener that when he put it back on he tightend it too much!!!!

He did not realize this until "tune up" marathon morning, the only problem was that he had left his tools inthe hotel room.
We always have the local fire brigade with the team and they managed to loosen it with a monkey rench, not the right tool, but it was all they had that could do the job.:thumbsup2

I gave it a try and they had loosened it too much and I fell off. :scared1:There where some runners waiting for the toilets and they came running to pick me back up, first aid also came over and wanted to look at my arm as it was bleeding but I said no. I was more worried that I was going to get told off by the team director as I was not wearing my helmet at the time.:lmao: My Dh and the fire man manged to tighten it up just as we where called to the start line.
I was very cautious on the corners as I didn't know if it was in the right spot or not.
When I fell of on the course it was because the turn was to tight and I got stuck in the cones.

Yesterday we went donw the trail to do 30 miles, I was flaying along at 20mph when I hit a stone, my from wheel slid under me sidways and I stopped as soon as I could.
My Dh finally cought me up and had a look, the stone had knocked a couple of my spokes loose.:sad2:
I tried to get going again, but every time I got up to 14mph the wheel started to wobble, so my Dh told me to stop and he gave me a tow back to the car. We only did 13.5 miles.
We headed stright to the shop and had the wheel trued, now its working great.

This morning I di 22 miles. I flew along the mian road at 21.5mph, normally I only go 16mph and stay on the sidewalk.
I love the effect the protin powder is having on me.:woohoo:

We are going to the trail tomorrow to try for the 30 again.:wizard:

My back wheels need to go back to hed as I need new bearings put in and my local shop do not have the tools to do it.:sad2:
I'm not looking forward to putting my training wheels back on as they stall at 16mph.:scared1:

One day I hope to have a secound chair, a flat one for time trials, then I would have a back up chiar to use.......I just need a spare $12,000.:lmao:

Wow Kirstie. That is amazing almost 22mph. You go girl. I bet it felt great to be zipping along on the main road. That is almost like moped speed.

I saw you on the video clip from the news. How cool.

As for me - my 12 year old neice and I did a 1 mile race this evening before the holiday parade (the only local parade at night - my city Delray Beach ALWAYS has had their Christmas Parade around 6:30 on the 2nd Saturday of Dec and it was the BEST!!!! Well I guess there were fights last year and to avoid that they are having it at 4:30 this year - I am not even gonna bother to go.) So tonight was Boca Raton's parade and since the run is right before the parade you have a Disney race sized crowd on the side of the road cheering for you (granted they are all lined up for the parade but still I heard some cheering for us) Let me tell you - that was the hardest mile I have ever done. I think we went out a little too fast - first of all my neice had a cortisone shot in her shoulder this morning for bursitis because she is a gymnast so she also had 3 hours of gym practice before the race. I am glad I had her with me though because with the heat and humidity I felt like I was dying (well not really but....) I look over on the side and I see its only 1/4 mile (it was marked on the side every 1/4) I was thinking to myself I am never going to make it running this whole mile and so I kept checking with my neice to see how she was doing. She said she was starting to get a cramp so I told her breathe in through the nose and out the mouth. Luckily she wanted to walk (I was ready for a walk break but I didn't want to stop in front of all those people because come on its only 1 mile but still I was ready) So I was lucky she was there so I could "play" like I was only stopping because of her - LOL. About 3/4 of a mile was were the grandstands for the parade was set up and there was this very bright light - it was hard to see past it. Once the finish line was in sight my neice asks me if that was the finish line and as soon as I said yes she took off and sprinted to the finish. Not sure of the official times hopefully they will be out tomorrow. I know I finished in 9:14 which is a PR for me - considering I have never done a 1 mile race before although that is my quickest mile ever that I know of. I asked my neice what time she saw when she went over and she said 9:08 but I think she was quicker than that because she flew ahead of me as we were coming up to the finish line and I am sure she got there just under 9 minutes. We then got our shirts (smart they handed them out after the race so we didn't have to carry them during the race) we got some Gatorade and were off to find my sister and the baby. We sat on the curb and watched the parade for awhile but it kept getting later and later so we decided to start walking back to the car which was along the parade route so we still got to see the parade. The baby was at her first parade and saw Santa for the first time. She loved the marching bands and kicked her feet when she saw Santa. So cute!!! Ugh now I am exhusted and ready for bed.

Wow. Winter showed up, finally. Pretty cold and windy. Not that it matters. After my crummy 18-miler on Sunday I made an Executive Decision to take the week off of runnin.g Will resume the "normally scheduled program" on Tuesday. Meanwhile, I've been swimming, spinning, and sweating my way through the week.

Just made a dinner ressie for Friday, marathon weekend. Now need to figure out my pre-race meal location and my "you deserve it, eat whatever the heck you want and spend the big bucks" meal for Sunday (post-marathon).

Scored a cheaper car rental (Budget)--anyone need a ride from the airport around 3:30 on Thursday? heading straight to the expo, so if you're interested, let me know.

Maura

Maura, good job on knowing it's time to take a bit of a breather. Whoo hoo on the ressies and the good car rental score. Thanks for the offer of sharing your ride. We're hooked with ME and arriving earlier Thursday.

Jeff, the 91y/o is one amazing woman and certainly has me inspired. My 91 y/o Mom was shocked.

I got in 8 miles today. They are done, and I'm moving on...was quite cold, but no wind and sunny. Pretty day.

Got my 10 miler done today - it wasn't very pretty since it was cold and rainy out but it was above freezing so not too slippery. For some, reason there were a lot of other runners out and about this morning so that's always fun :) Did 15/1 intervals and think I'll probably stick with that for the January race - I'm hoping those will hit the water stops, we'll see!

Kirstie - I had no idea your chair was that expensive! That's almost a car for me ... I guess I won't be complaining about the cost of running shoes anytime soon.

Jeff - I hope I'll still be running when I'm 91. She certainly doesn't look like what I thought a 91-year-old would look like. Off to check out your expo pics when I'm done posting.

Maura - The rest break sounds like a good idea :)

Lily - WTG on your 8 miler! When the weather is dreary and cold, I never want to go out either. But I always feel so much better once I get 'em done!

Tricia - Enjoyed reading your race report! Great time :)

AFM - Off to the gym tomorrow for training and possibly more running on Tuesday and Wednesday. I hope the weather continues to be mild if not dry :)

Have a great day everyone :wave2:

Maura - Winter showed up here, too. It's not supposed to do that in NC yet. Friday the high only reached around 34, Saturday was livable, and then I ran a half marathon today in 33 degree drizzle that finally disintegrated into sleet. Probably not Michigan winter, but for those of us not accustomed to cold weather this early in the season, quite a shock to the system! :scared1: Our "you deserve it, eat whatever the heck you want and spend the big bucks" meal is at Artist Point Sunday night.

Tricia - Great job on your 1 mile race!

Carrie - One more 18 miler in the books. Hooray! I like your explanation of why 18 is so difficult, BTW. It certainly seems to be the case for all of us. For some reason, when I get to 19 in the actual marathon that seems to be the worst spot - 7 miles to go still seems like a REALLY long way, 6 not so much! Another reason why I want to do half marathons, not fulls.

Ran a very cold, very hilly half this morning. Had promised my group leader and myself that this was just a training run and I would not aim for any time goal. Shaved 6:30 off my previous half marathon time... :woohoo: It was REALLY cold and we just wanted to finish!

Jackie

I did my longest crank to date today 45miles in 3:31.

I just took it at a comfortable speed as i'm trying to build up my endurance and that will hopefully make me faster.

We went out late and I was so in to my rythem I did not notice the time, my Dh said that we had to head back as the trail colsed at sunset.

We ended up in the dark, with no lights, and I can't see in dark.
My Dh was staying next to me and I couldn't see him!!!!!:scared1:
He was having to tell me to go left and right and when we where approaching the roads we needed to cross.

The local sheriff comes up the trail and we thought that we would be in big trouble, luckly we did not see him until we where back at the car and he did not say anything to us.
