Hello everyone!

For those new to us, we are a group of people who are planning to participate in walking/running events throughout the year. For most of us, the ultimate goal is to train and compete in the annual WDW Half/Full marathons. We'll also be posting news and training for various other events throughout the year. We range from beginners to triathletes. Come join us, whether you're training for an event or walking/running for fitness.

New WISH Team members. If you read one thing over and over, believe this. Being part of this team is fantastic. Part of the ride you get for the event is what I call the roller coaster. There will be lots of ups and downs. The more you post here, the more you will find yourself enjoying the ride. It is an incredible journey. Don't be afraid, shy or whatever to come here and just post up anything. You don't have to know us right away, or all of us at all. You will get to know some of us. It makes the event you are enjoying have MORE meaning and we love to have you.

:)

I'm in! I embraced the run with walking a few weeks ago....my goal had been to run the whole Princess 1/2 but as I keep training....I'm realistic this is not a realistic goal LOL. So I began to listen to any voices that stated that taking occ walk breaks allows your body to recover esp if you are not an avid athlete and can increase your overall time....so I'm in, and will be at the Princess 1/2 2011

Hi! I'm going to jump in! I've been lurking around here for quite a while and need to increase my accountability!

My ultimate goal - the thing that got me off of the sofa - was the desire to participate in the Princess Half in 2011. I am registered and ready to go! Now I just have to work on training! I scheduled another half Marathon locally (the Myrtle Beach Mini Marathon) in October so I could do a 'test run' before February, but I just can not WAIT until February!

So far, I'm still slow. I am not much of a runner so I'm doing 80-90% walking. I'm slowly adding more intervals, but it's obvious that I'm much happier/healthier as a walker right now. I'm barely making the 16 min/mi requirement, but I'm hoping once it starts to cool down I'll speed up a little bit. I did my longest distance yesterday at 10.1 miles. I was proud of myself for going so far!

I'm going to keep reading here to get information and inspiration! I'm also loving the idea of being part of a team, especially since everything I have coming up is a solo venture. It would be great to see some familiar faces!

Hey Kids!

I have not been on this thread for a while. Spending most of my post times with the Warriors, but I feel the need to "branch out" a bit more.......

I'm really big on the run/walk strategy also. That's Jim Galloway's method, & in the Florida heat, unless you are an elite runner, it's (IMHO) a sensible, safe way to proceed. Additionally, I take fluids with me, & when they are gone, it's time to head home.

I usually run 5/walk 1 during the heat. Depending on conditions, I may raise or lower that some. That's the interval I would LOVE to do for an entire full (but not there yet). For a 1/2, I try 7/1 or 8/1. We'll see how well that works in California next month. Only problem is that I have not done more than 8 miles at a time all summer due to the heat. :scared1::scared1::scared1::scared1: Hopefully the weather is better for running out there in September than it is here.

I agree with JimB on the run/walk and I think it will build confidence for you (you being MeredithRX and NCrunner) The hills of Asheville and the heat of the beach make for a tough run. The Princess is so much fun and with so much entertainment you forget about the race.

AFM, I will be up at o'dark o'clock for my LR in the morning. Just seems easier without the sun beating down and I get to try out my new handheld water bottle.

Hi everyone.

I've been MIA for awhile. Time to get back on track. Did a 5k yesterday in just under 43 minutes. I alternated walking and wogging every 1/4 mile. It was my longest stint since the Indy 1/2 in May. What a slug I've been.
I'm planning on registering for the Goofy. Been holding out making that payment and keeping an eye on how close to being full it is.

I hope to get back to making more frequent posts. Hope everyone's training is going well.

Terri

You know, most people are actually faster doing R/W than all run. Welcome ot WISH team!

Welcoem to WISh team! Your speed will come with thime. Pleanty of time be fore February. I LOVE hearing about people doing their longest ever distances. Going ot be a very long itme, if ever ebfore I cross another thresholdlike that, so I livve vicariously through others.

Galloway is very good. My favorited is John Bingham's Marathonign for Mortals. SOunds liek both of you may have a plan, but if you don't/ And, yes, speed will come back as temps go down.

Hi Jim, Joan and Terri!

I'm resting after the big race. Did do yoga Tuesday and will go to swim class tonight. We'll see how it goes to move again. Porbably won't ge ta run in until Monday afternoon, though.

Happy Thursday!!!

I decided to give the legs a rest this morning & did 28 miles of biking instead of running. Easier on the back, too. Probably going to try some weights & core this afternoon. Wow, the DL 1/2 is just around the corner!! Time flies!!

AAAAAAAAGH!!!!!!!! Not. Ready. Yet.

NCRunner Good luck with your run/walk plan. You probably already know, but you have lots of company with that here on the WISH boards.

Meredith Congrats on going 10 miles! That is quite a long distance, and already puts you in great shape for making it through the half.

Jim 28 bike miles? Not much of a "rest"! And yes, I can't believe that in 28 days I'll be leaving for DL!

Carrie Are you still on a high from your race? Hope so--after all that work!

AFM... same old, same old. This weekend I am doing a "metric century (62 mile)" bike ride with DH followed on Sunday by 20 mile LR. If I make it through I expect to be a zombie Sunday pm!

Maura

Not to jinx it, but the past 2 years, the weather has been awesome. Coastal fog from pre race start until about 8:30-9:00. CA has been really cool this summer, especially the past couple of weeks. Cross our fingers it stays that way!!1:goodvibes

Meredith - Great work on the distance. You will be so ready come February! Easy peasy!

NCRunner - run/walk is where it's at! I mix it up. Flat runs are run/run. Hills are 3/1 and long runs are fairly flat and 5/1. At least that's what I do now. When it gets cooler I may test some longer ones again. I used 10/3 in the Disney half this year. That was too much for me then.

I've had a great week so far. I'm again biking to work some. Got away from it last winter leading up to the Disney half. I'd ridden a couple times in July, but this week got back in the saddle Monday and Wednesday. Tuesday and Thursday were run mornings. I'll bike again tomorrow. It's just a few miles, but I love it. The heat has let up the last couple of days and the difference is wonderful.

I'm on the Galloway just finish plan for January. This weekend is 7.5 miles. I'll probably round up to 8.

Maura - that should make for good sleep Sunday night!

Hi - I am new too and planning to do the Princess Half - I cannot believe I am saying that!!

I have been hanging out at the Princess thread for a few days and just starting looking around here tonight. I am loving all the advice and support.

I haven't been active in a long time and to start running months from turning 38 seems crazy sometimes but with all of you, I know I can do it. I am going to look/feel great and I am going to run at Disney World! It makes me teary just thinking about it.

Thank you!

So do you see a lot of that in the actual race? The run/walk thing? I guess I pictured runners...and have been hard on myself when I break to walk. I'm hearing its actually good and can decrease your overall time if you do it right?

So do you see a lot of that in the actual race? The run/walk thing? I guess I pictured runners...and have been hard on myself when I break to walk. I'm hearing its actually good and can decrease your overall time if you do it right?

Absolutely! There will be many, many run/walkers, and many who are doing 100% walk. There is nothing wrong with taking walk breaks, and you most definitely can decrease your time if you do it right.

I'm actually a member of a Galloway running group here in Raleigh (4th year), so I'm a firm believer in the run/walk method.

Meredith - 10 miles is a BIG deal. That first double digit distance is such a huge accomplishment. The speed will come, especially as it gets cooler. This summer is miserable! We're doing the Myrtle Beach Half in February, but can't fit the October one into our schedule. (Were supposed to do the half this past year, but were "lucky" enough to be part of the first ever snowed-out Myrtle Beach Marathon!)

Joan - How'd you like the new water bottle?

Terri
- Funny, I don't think I've done any real distance since Indy either! Mostly because of injury, but as I read your post I realized that I hadn't run really long since then...

Carrie - How's the recovery coming along? You did great!

Maura - Reading about your weekend makes me tired. I'm counting your miles, since I still can't run!

Ronda
- Jeff Galloway has started doing his marathons at a :30R/:30W. He swears it's faster. I still think it sounds crazy, but he's really, really pushing the shorter intervals.

Lexxie&Nicky - Starting at 37 isn't crazy at all. I was 43, and I started with a 5K. I did my first half at 45, so you're way ahead of me! Just be forewarned - it's addictive! And if you get teary thinking about it, you'll probably need tissues when you run down Main Street!

I have my MRI Monday, so I hope to know sometime next week what's wrong with my hip and if and when I get to run again, and if I'll actually get to run Marine Corps. The friend I signed up with is about to go crazy waiting to hear if I'm going to have to sell my entry, since we agreed to do this one together. Keep your fingers crossed!

Jackie

Thanks Jackie!!
I hope that MRI answers your questions - not knowing must be hard. I am sure I will totally cry on Mainstreet and at the finish line - providing I make it to the finish line. :)

NCRunner - I need to wait to register for financial reasons :( for the princess, I hate it when everything is due/needed at the same time. I am going to keep at the training though in the meantime and cannot wait to register.

Jackie Hope that MRI gets you some answers and I hope it is all good news. Loved the amphipod lite hand held (12 oz bottle) and put my sports beans in the little pouch-actually took them out of the packaging.

Got yall beat on age-started 2008 and did the Minnie 15K..I'll be 49 (sshh) on Tuesday. I did my first half last year--the princess and again this year and signed up today to do it again next year.

run/walk in races? Goodness, yes. Lots and lots of people using it. I am an adult onset endurance athlete (props to John Bingham). I am slow. Spending that much time on the course I need to use the run/walk to clear the lactic acid from my muscles. With proper fueling one can go for a very, very long time.

I did the eight this morning. Wow! Felt great and averaged 12:01. It was warm, 75* at the beginning. I must be getting used to the warmer temps. It felt, well, uh, easy?

Hope everyone is having a great training weekend!

Ronda

It seems as if everyone is having a pretty productive week! As for me, I was a good girl and got my scheduled training in. I got up this morning and did my scheduled 8 miles. I was itching to try and match/beat my 10 miles from last weekend, but I know better....follow the plan! Darn competitive streak! But, my 8 miles went well, and I felt absolutely fabulous all afternoon. No soreness or stiffness at all. That's a first! So, I must have done SOMETHING right!

Jackie - Good luck with the MRI. I hope it's nothing that keeps you out of the race! And, I vividly remember all the local news about the cancelled Myrtle Beach Marathon last year. What a mess! Hopefully this year will be much better. I can say that it was the very first time I have EVER seen it snow like that on the beach! Weird.

Since I have not been sleeping, I took yesterday off and planned to go this morning but it is about to storm so I guess I am waiting a bit. I am planning on two miles {I know - pathetic} but will maybe see how I feel. I need to get an idea of timing for a race in the next couple of months. They have a time limit and I don't want to get kicked off the course.

Great job everyone on training!!
