Monorail Collision in WDW

Aw, that's sad. I don't really find it fun anymore (lol, awkwarddd) but it's sad that that experience will now not be available. :(

Yeah I know what you mean. Like I've done it a few times, but now that I'm older I try to let other younger kids get the chance to do it. But now it's not going to happen anymore :(

Just read on TPAS that noone's allowed in the front car ever again :(

Its actually only a temporary measure for now.

They're not sure if they'll ever allow anyone back in.

They have not made it permanent yet, but for now they're not letting anyone in "out of respect for the family."

i hope they dont take away riding in the pilots cabin. but i can see why, theyd keep it or not keep it.

Anymore information?

I heard there's a lot of people who want to retire purple as a monorail color. Out of respect for the family and pretty much all visitors to WDW. I know I'm not sure if I could ever actually ride in the purple one again. Also, how depressing would it be to think of the accident everytime you see the purple monorail?

::yes:: Exactly.
I think they should retire the color.

i also agree they should retire purple. maybe make a light purple one instead. either way, i dont believe we'll be seeing it for a while.

Disney reopened the monorail system.

Taken from the Orlando Sentinel:

Walt Disney World said it reopened its monorail system this afternoon -- after taking new safety steps to monitor track switches, according to a note to employees this morning.

The move came about 36 hours after a predawn collision killed one monorail pilot. The collision occurred as one of the trains was supposed to be in the midst of transferring off the system's Epcot line, which ferries guests between the Magic Kingdom and Epcot, and onto a main Magic Kingdom line, according to Disney's note.

Disney told its employees that investigators with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration have "released" the monorail system back to the resort. OSHA says it currently has two investigators on scene.

"We have completed a thorough safety inspection and system checks to verify that it is safe to operate the monorail for our guests and cast," Disney said. "We've added additional verifications of these track switch positions, supplemented our safety procedures and protocols for these operations, and communicated these changes to our Transportation partners."

The new procedures include having multiple employees verify that a switch between monorail beams has been completed before a train is allowed to advance.

Oooh the light purple idea is good!
It seems like everyone on TPAS doesn't want them to retire purple? Weird...

That diagram helped me understand it a lot better. Thanks!

so. okay. this is official?

and pink was in manual and couldnt stop, right? because purple wouldve stopped if it was in auto pilot still and thus couldnt escape from the backing up monorail. do i have that right or am i still stupidly confused? xD

My honest guess is that the ability for guests to ride up front will return, but only be available during daylight hours. I think it makes the most sense as the event happened at night when things were obviously more dangerous.

I also agree that monorail purple should be retired.

Like I don't think pink should be retired...only purple.

I also think purple should be retired, but idk if Disney would do that.

I mean, think of all the other people who have died because of ride malfunctions, or whatever. Perfect example, a man dressed up as Pluto in the Share A Dream Come True Parade at MK got his foot caught under a float and was run over, and died. They didn't retire the float or anything.

Yeah, this situation is a little different, but I don't know if Disney would do it.

I think it would be great if Disney would do it, and I think a lot of people who travel on monorail purple will be weirded out, but I don't know if it would be practical for them to do so.

Plus, would they just scrap that monorail, or just repaint it? I'm sure buying a whole new monorail is expensive, and I'm sure Disney doesn't wanna be spending a lot of money in this economy. So even if they repaint it, it's still gonna be creepy. IDK...those are just my thoughts.

I think the monorail should be retired all together.

Can you imagine another monorail pilot operating the same monorail in the same cabin where a fellow cast member died?

Yeahh. It's like, no matter how much they fix it up from the crash&what not...someone still died operating in there. It's morbid :/

I totally agree. I know that if I was a monorail pilot, there is no way they could get me to drive the purple one.
