We were playing Monopoly recently, haven't played in a few years. As I was reading the instructions for the distribution of money, I remembered one thing we used to do when I played as a child, which isn't mentioned in these rules. So I wasn't sure if it's something that my family or friends made up or if this was part of the game years (& years) ago.

At the beginning of the game, we put money in the center of the board, I think it was $200.00. Then when a chance card or community chest card instructed a player to pay X amount but didn't specify where it was to go, we'd put it in the center. When a player landed on "Free Parking", they'd get all of that money.

Does anyone else remember playing this way? If you play (used to play) board games, do you always go exactly by the rules or do you bend or make up some?

We always played it this way too as a family. :)

That is a "house" rule - we play that way and so do most for my friends, but the official rules state that you are NOT to receive anything for landing on free parking and all money goes to the bank.

We always played that way too, and that was many years ago. I bought the Disney version and taught my 7yo niece how to play as a way to use & count money.

We have the Star Wars version and other than not adding the $200 at the start, that is how we play also.

We play that way too usually, but we only start it with 100.

We always do that too - but we start out with a 500.00 bill in the centre. We also have another house rule that if you land on go, instead of just passing go - you get 400.00 instead of the 200.00. The money in the middle makes landing on free parking more exciting :)

We played by the rules, so never did that. But over the years I have played with others who did a whole lot of other things on their own, family traditions. Although the OP's house rule is a new one on me.

We play that way too. It makes for a really REALLY long game.

It's been years since I've played, but that's how we played, too. The money went into the center "pot", and you got it if you landed on Free Parking.

We play it that same way. Except that we start with $50 (and replace it any time someone lands on Free Parking and takes the pot--so it is never empty) and we keep the money stashed under the corner of the board that Free Parking is on.

We never played that way but I had a friend who did.

This is how we always played also.

We used a kitty (that you get by landing on Free Parking), but we didn't put money in it to start. It gets filled up with money from Community Chest and Chance cards, paying to get out of jail, luxury tax, etc. Basically any money you would pay to the bank besides buying properties and house/hotels goes in the kitty.

We also do the $400 for landing on go.

Gamers here who constantly change rules as well. :rotfl:

Yes, we would play as kids putting the money in the center.

Now as adults we tend to not do that. Makes the game on a more level playing field. We are very competitive and we make games harder, not easier. :lmao:

We played that way as kids. In fact, my sister and I had running games in the summer with a couple of our neighborhood friends. We played almost every night and since the games took so long, we'd all take our money home with us and bring it back when we played again. :rotfl2:

Chiming in to say that's how we always play too.

We also start out with a $500 in the middle.

And, at the end of the game when someone runs out of money, we keep a running total of what is owed on a scrap of paper (in lieu of mortgaging properties)

:hippie:
