Moms to be Part 4

Alright girls, I did a search on the boards to find previous discussions of a topic, and it turns out most of the discussion was on one of the "moms to be" threads... That and the baby ear piercing thread... :confused3

Tell me what you guys think about circumcision.

We're having a girl, so it's not something we have to worry about now, but if we were having a boy we would have him circumcised... I think it's a very personal decision and there is no right or wrong choice, but it would have been what worked for us.

DH won't even consider NOT circumcising. Since he's the male of the house, I'm taking his opinion on it. He believes that we have a religious obligation (we are Christian, not Jewish) and just thinks it is best overall. So...that's what we're doing. I don't really have strong feelings about it one way or the other since I don't really understand the equipment involved in the way DH does!

I'm definitely leaning towards doing it. In fact, before I did the search, I looked it up on the internet just to see when it was normally done, etc... and of course I had to read one of those stories about how horrified someone was to witness it and now I'm rethinking my decision. I know DH is pretty much pro-circ.... Maybe because he is. I'll say that I have "had" one with (foreskin) and one without, and as a woman prefer the without... (so now you know more about my DH than you wanted to... :rotfl: )

Disclaimer: I definitely don't want to start an argument, I just want to hear other people's experiences or thoughts... in what I believe to be a safe environment. :)

Thanks so much! I know it isn't ever easy to go through a miscarriage, but I honestly think this pregnancy would be easier if I'd had problems that I knew about (cramping, bleeding, etc) when I had my miscarriage. As it was I thought everything was fantastic only to be totally destroyed. So now even when things are going great I worry :scared1:

Everything is great. Baby is measuring right on target, a solid heartrate of 178bpm and was wriggling around today when they did the ultrasound....that was very cool .

YAYYYYY I'm so happy for you!

Hi all! I'm a slacker when it comes to posting.... Welcome to all the new mommies-to-be!

I have a question for you all.... Is anyone here looking at or made the decision to do cord blood banking? If so, what company did you decide to go with? I have been on the phone and on-line for a good part of the day looking into this, and I think I’m more confused now then when I started.

I'd do it if it weren't so darned expensive. :sad2:

I have been thinking about the cord blood banking as well; it is confusing. I think I may ask the Dr when we go back next time. I am interested but want to know more before we make a decision.

I feel like my little guy is kicking or punching me on or near my cervix. It is a wierd sort of painful feeling. Does this happen to anyone else or is it something I should be concerned by?

I get kicked down there, and I remember my friend saying her DS kicked her down there a *lot*. I don't think it was a concern.

We're doing it, no question.

I also prefer the "without." Haha.

I feel this is a safe non-judgmental environment too. I feel I could say things or ask you girls things that I normally would be afraid to ask/say on the DIS.

We are donating our cord blood. Banking is really expensive and its not a guarantee that the baby or another family member would even benefit. By donating, we are guaranteed that at some point someone will benefit and the hope is that enough people catch on to donating and we all have the chance to benefit at some point. Here is a link to some hospitals that participate in a public banking program.....

ETA: We are circumcising.

Hi Ladies: Here is my take!

Cord Blood: We did not do it with out oldest 2; not opposed to it, byt it seemed unnecessary. Our son was in NICU for 2 weeks at birth but it did not make a difference that we did not have the cord blood. If you have the extra funds, I think it would be a good idea; I would not go into debt for it.

Circumcision: Absolutely not. I am pretty firm on it. We have an 8 year old uncircumcised boy and we have never had an issue. We also did not have an uncomfortable screaming baby who was recovering from a painful procedure.(I have heard plenty of stories about re-doing the procedure.) I have nephews and I just thought that it looked awful. (just my opinion.) My husband is a typical Christian man, who was circumcised, and we researched the procedure together and we decided together that it was just not for us. The American Academy of Pediatrics no longer recommends it at birth, and the current US trends are to NOT. The risk of diseases is no higher although there are groups that try to say otherwise.

Also, we take no extra steps to clean his *****. We wash it just like the rest of his body: we don't pull the skin back, which is what a lot of people have asked me! Finally, in my son's preschool class there were 8 boys, 6 girls. None of the boys were circumcised---I could not believe it! I thought we were the only ones, so I was very relieved to know that he was not the sole kid!!!

NOT judging your decision, so please don't think that I am...I know sometimes it can come across that way as I am quoting you and it's not my intention. Just relating my personal experience in regards to what you said (which I bolded)...

We had DS circumcised- my OB does the "new" technique (which is something I would ask about to anyone who is interested in doing it, as the L&D nurses said the babies really do better with circumcisions done this way vs. the old) and she gives all babies a numbing shot (not just a cream) vs. no pain medication at all.

We never even had to give DS 1 dose of Tylenol, he never seemed bothered by it at all. The nurses kept offering me the Tylenol and I kept telling them not until it seemed like he needed it, and he never did. The circumcision didn't phase him a bit, honestly. I wasn't present for it, nor was DH, but I'm sorta glad that we weren't. I absolutely trusted my OB so it wasn't a big deal to me not to be there with her, though they offered and made it clear I had the right to be there.

Anyway, obviously we did it was DS after that tangent ;) and will be doing it again with DS#2.

...I'm going to look into donating cord blood. Thanks for the link!

I guess I'm in the minority on this, but I didn't think the blood cord banking was all that expensive. They actually have discounts on the initial fee and they have payment plans of either 6 or 12 months. The yearly storage fee is only $125.00 which comes down to about $10.00 a month.... I spent another hour or so on the phone with one of the companies and I think we've made our decision.
Thanks to those of you that gave your opinions on it though.

Oh geez, I think the cost went down dramatically since DD was born! It's not that I'm against it, and I even looked into donating it tonight... but there is nowhere to donate locally.

Piecey, what's the "new" circ. technique? I don't see the OB again until the end of the month, so it's quicker to just ask you instead!

I totally get donating, but if you can financially swing it, I don't think the banking cost was that bad.

I don't really know. I honestly didn't ask my OB anything about it. She just asked if we wanted it done, I said yes and she did it.

Then the nurses told me I was lucky to have my OB because she did the "new" technique and another mom on the old moms-to-be thread said the same thing. Our pediatrician said the same thing to a student physician he had one day "Oh, this is the 'new' way of doing a circumcision, it's really nice." :rotfl: You'd think I would have asked but I never have.

I'll ask the other mom if she knows anything else but I know that it involves taking less foreskin but it supposedly evens out as they grow to look the same. At least I'm relatively positive it works like that... I'm super helpful, huh??

Good morning everyone.

Baby is just pounding away on or near my cervix. It feels icky and sort of painful all at once. I wish he would find a new interest, maybe even go back to my bladder if he had to pick one, LOL

I am 99% sure we will do circumcision. DH looked at me like I was crazy for even asking when we talked about it so...

If we decide not to bank the cord blood we will definitely donate it. The hospital we are delivering at has a program for doing so.

I feel really gross today. I may leave early from work...I don't have much to do here anyway. We are leaving on a quick road trip tonight to pick up our new bulldog puppy tomorrow morning. I am excited, and hoping I can have him potty trained by the time Colton arrives!

Have a great day everyone!

Hey it was super helpful that you even told me about it! :) I'll ask more about it when I go on the 26th. :goodvibes I might ask on the Moms-to-be thread... but I might not in case I get flamed. I really hate getting torn apart like that over something silly. I'm so glad I have you ladies, you're my safe haven for baby talk!

I'm sorry the behbeh is giving your cervix trouble. I used to get these horrible pinches down there during the first 8-10 weeks or so, come to think of it. Ouch!

I'm torn about the cord blood thing, ok, not quite torn, but that's still a nice chunk of money better spent elsewhere. I guess it's like an insurance policy of sorts. ::sigh::

I asked DH about the circumcision thing too, he also looked at me like I was nuts. He said he's never thought about it. I said "well, I asked you because I don't have one!" Haha. DH said he doesn't feel like he's missing anything, SO, it's definitely a definite. I said I'm doing it for his (DS's not DH's) future wife.

Ohhh! A puppy!! Awwwww! Have fun going to pick him up. I'm so jealous, I want a kitten so badly! But, DD + DS + kitten = crazy me. :headache:

Have fun leaving work early, I always loved leaving early for some reason. :lovestruc

Mrs. C: It is probably crazy for me to get a new puppy right now too, but I figure if not now it might be years, since I am hoping he will be at least 90% potty trained in the next four months (fingers crossed!). If we had another little one, this would not be happening, LOL! I think puppy will be a good age by the time baby is actually able to start "playing" with him :goodvibes: Well, I hope so at least, LOL

Ask on what thread? This is the Moms-to-be thread :rotfl:

Amy, yay on the puppy! That will be so exciting!!

...I know I said I wasn't going to be around much but I'm working on an online test and breaks are helping me keep my sanity. I had to retake college algebra (apparently earning it for a Business degree isn't good enough for the Education department :rotfl:) and I'm in he(double hockey sticks..)... this test is kicking my butt. My mind is mommy mush and i can read the question 20 times and not raelly get what she is asking.
Unfortunately my teacher had a baby a few weeks ago and has been a bit MIA (understandably, though!)... so I'm all sorts of lost.

We're also going to be getting a new puppy the first weekend in May. We lost ours this past November and had already put a deposit down on one before we found out I was pregnant so we would be potty-training during the summer when it's a little easier. I'm excited to get our little Abby (she's an australian terrier) but probably would have waited had I had any idea I would end up getting pregnant so quickly after it taking forever!!

I always thought that was cute though, when a kid has had an animal since they were born, though! :cloud9:

This *might* and probably will be our last, even though DH said mayyyyybe we could "try" for a 3rd... I had fertility issues with this one, so it might not even be in the cards for me, and I'm gonna need that kitten! haha

D'oh!! I meant "new moms thread." My brain is jello at this point.

Ohhh Algebra. I did fine in high school in it, but when I did it in college.. ugh. Didn't do as well, lol. Godspeed! :)

And you have Sammi to help you! :) I bet she's thrilled to get a new puppy and a sibling! She's gotta be on cloud nine. :cloud9:

Oh, I started that thread. It's a bunch of mommies from when I was pregnant with Lucas. It's slowed down a lot lately... a few are getting ready for trips to WDW, I'm so jealous!
A few have joined from this thread but the majority of us are from when I was pregnant with Lucas.

They're all nice, I swear no one will attack you over there. ;)
