Moms of Winter Babies-Gifts?

Our first grandchild will be here in late January and I'm dying to start shopping!

So, new moms of winter babies, what items were most useful to you? I'd love to pick up cute things when I see them. I'm mainly interested in the small things-clothes, blankets, books, toys, etc and would love to hear what worked for you and your little one.

DS and DDIL live in Austin (Don't think they'll need a snowsuit.) and are having a girl but planning on going with gender neutral things.

I live in Austin and have a January baby. The footsie pajamas made of fleece/ heavy material will be way too hot for the baby here in the winter. I dressed my newborn in 100% cotton sleepers similar to these. http://www.carters.com/carters-baby...rt=1&cgid=carters-baby-boy-little-baby-basics They are the perfect weight for Austin babies. I tried the heavier pj's on him once or twice and he really burned up in them.

We've decided to buy a car seat for a "big" gift. I talked to DS and they're thinking of going with a newborn car seat/stroller combo. Anyone familiar with these?

We've been happy with our Britax infant seat that clicks into our Britax B-Agile or B-Ready stroller. Chicco Keyfits are probably the most popular infant seats, followed by Graco Snugrides. Both are great seats...it just depends on what is compatible with the stroller mom wants. Some moms also use a "Snap n Go" type stroller for those early months if their infant car seat doesn't click in to their main stroller.

My DD had two baby showers and got hardly any newborn clothes. I think there were maybe less that 8 newborn outfits. Grandma had to go buy some more since he's a tiny little peanut. He's still too small for most of them so I had to buy a few preemie outfits for him. I think he will be in newborn for a while.

Things I would suggest: books, hooded bath towels, extra bassinet/play yard/crib sheets, burp clothes, receiving blankets.

As for the car seat. DD has the Graco Snugride stroller combo. So far so good. We have a car seat base in 4 cars. lol We chose this system because in stroller mode the seat can be rear facing or facing the parent. The frame can also be used without the stroller seat in it so you just take the frame and pop in the infant seat. Makes it much easier to transport.

If I were buying new right now I'd consider these. All are excellent infant car seats and look like good strollers that are easy to fold.

We have the Britax system and it's held up just fine through three babies, but I'd definitely consider the Graco or Chicco systems I linked.

The City Mini stroller is pretty much the gold standard for a nice, entry-level stroller to last from infant years through toddlerhood. A car seat adaptor is available for purchase that works with several brands of infant seats. There is a great review comparing it to that Graco one I also linked. If the family has two cars, an extra base is always appreciated as well!

We really like chicco keyfit- but they are a little on the heavy side. I'd definitely suggest you get 2 of the bases (assuming parents have 2 cars). A lot of people try to save by only getting one and switching it back and forth, but it's a pain and less safe to constantly move the base.

The chicco caddy stroller is really nice if you are driving around with it and using it for errands since it's lightweight and doesn't take up as much room, but it has a shorter shelf life since it only works with the carrier (unlike the full size stroller which can e used as a stand alone without the carrier).

Oh, and you/your daughter may want to take a look at the Baby Bargains Book by Alan & Denise Fields. It helps with what strollers/car seats to look for.
