Mommy, why won't Mickey talk to me?

How do I explain non-speaking costumed characters to my dd? I know her. She'll ask. I know I know I've seen this thread on here somewhere before but I can't find it.

I've never seen a thread on this, but I can give you my personal experience. Our DD is very intelligent and perceptive and began asking why Mickey didn't speak to hear when she was about 3 1/2 years old. I explained that Mickey would lose his voice if he spoke to everyone he saw each day, so the only fair thing he could do was not to speak at all. That worked for a good long while and was much easier to explain than how the characters seem to be in so many places at once! Of course DD is 9 years old now and asks much tougher questions. told ds#1 that the characters had so many people to talk to that they would lose their voices if they spoke to each child. Since I have a boy, he's not that interested in the "people" characters (most of which are princesses anyway) so I had quite a while before I had any additional questions.

Now ds#1 is almost 8 and has known that there are people in the costumes for quite a while, but still enjoys it. I now remind him not to spoil it for his brother, who is only 3 and still believes. After a while, they all figure it out. Some lose interest then, others keep the magic for years afterwards.

My daughter always asks as well. She says, Mommy they talk on TV?? But now when she asks I know what to say. Thanks for the great idea!!

We tried the 'Mickey would lose his voice' tactic on DS at age 3. However, he would have none of it. He blew the whistle on Mickey's 'real self', loudly and with a wary eye on Mickey as he quickly walked away. Never went to another Meet and Greet after that.
