Mom VS Short shorts on dd UPDATE pg 3

We finally found some at Meijer's - that were long enough for school - they have elastic waist bands with the draw strings hidden - which is good since dd has no waist and is all legs

My DD (16) refuses to even look any more. She says she'll just wear her jeans all summer. It's been two years since she found any shorts she's willing to wear. She is a conservative dresser and also refuses to wear low ride jeans because she doesn't want to look like a hoochie! She's been buying Lee painter pants in the misses dept because they're nice and baggy!! I don't want her looking like a hoochie but I sure wish she lighten up just a little!!!

I'm NOT a conservative dresser, (not that I let everything hang out!) but I know my body well enough to know that I should NOT wear short shorts! I don't weigh alot at all, I'm rather thin, but like most women all my weight goes to my thighs and butt!

I'm 18, I walked into Abercrombie and Fitch and had a heart attack! I just can't wear those things! I really don't care if others do, in fact, I envy them, but that is the style everywhere...

Oh well, I guess it's skirts and capris/flood pants for me!

Stay strong, moms. If we don't buy them, they will quickly go out of fashion. I say we join forces! Make a stand! Parents Against Naked Teens! Join PANTS today!!!!!!!!! :teeth:

I too noticed how the short-shorts are everywhere!
My 13 y.o. dd is interested in them, but only because they are in style. We did buy one pair of them this weekend, but she will only wear them for dance class...or around the house.
She really likes capris, and we will buy some not so short shorts for out in public.
I'm glad she made this choice.

Wow, I thought maybe it was just me! My daughter is 12, turning 13 this summer, and when I take her clothes shopping it's NOT fun! She loves all the new styles, short-shorts, tight jeans, etc. What is it with everything having to fit like a second skin?! It's a royal battle when we hit the stores. Sometimes I think we go through fifty outfits before we find something we'll both agree on. Her middle school also has the 'fingertip rule' for shorts. She likes capri's but she is short for her age, (4' 9"), so capri's always look too long on her. She's small and can wear clothes in the girl's department, but she says their clothes look like they're for little girls. She prefers PacSun, American Eagle, etc. And don't even get me started on the prices of the clothes in these teen stores! I refuse to pay $15.00 for a skimpy t-shirt, or $37.00 for one pair of jeans!

Here's a typical conversation as my daughter tries on clothes in the dressing room:
ME- "Let me see anything that you like."
HER- opens the dressing room so I can see her- "I really like this."
ME- "It's too tight."
HER- "No, it isn't. It's how everyone wears it."
ME- "it's definitely too tight. It'll shrink even more in the wash."
HER- "No it won't. It fits perfectly."
ME- "Can you breathe or sit down in it?"
HER- "MOM! Of course I can!"
ME- "It's too tight. Try the next thing on."

and so on and so on...I'm sure you know how it goes!

I have been reading this thread all morning. Each time I come back I laugh and think to myself I'm glad I have a son.

By biggest problem is making sure his pants, shorts stay up on his waist. He hates to wear a belt. When he puts one on it's so loose the pants/shorts still end up hanging off of him.

I guess I'd rather fight the belt battle than the short shorts battle.

Hang in there moms.

so Joan- how did the shopping go???????:D

My DD (18) and I just had this conversation last night in the dressing room at Hollisters. She tried on some kind of short/skirt thing that the sales girl had on. It didn't look too bad as she is short (5') but I definately talked her out of it. It looked awful on the sales girl.
Up until this year she was at a high school that has a very strict dress code (yey!) She didn't wear shorts her entire Junior year. This year she is duel enrolled at a local community college and apparently anything goes :( It's funny, her boyfriend actually talks her out of the really revealing cloths - he tells her she looks like the girls she always talks about who look "loose" (that's not the word they use but I'll use it for the sake of the board). That usually does the trick. Now if I can get him to go with her whenever she shops for cloths :). (He also tells her to check the sale racks which she generally doesn't do on her own!)

This year's shorts look like a headband with a crotch sewn in, and let's not mention those waistbands that they're trying to pass off as a skirt.

I just returned from a shopping trip with my 18 yr old DD. My sister only has a son, and she thought it would be fun to take my DD shopping for her birthday. Hee, hee......:p :p :p

Fortunately, DD is not willing to wear this year's shorts. She has that J'Lo booty thing going, and knows that they're not designed for her body type. It's capris and athletic style shorts around here.

She goes to a Catholic HS, and yes, it brings a smile to see how she and her classmates are required to dress. The kids hate it, but the parents love it.;)

I'm 16 and I probably wear the shorts most of you are complaining about.:o But I'm really short (just under 5'), so I really don't think they look bad on me. I don't wear shorts to school anyway, because they always have the air conditioning on and it's way too cold for shorts! I wear capris sometimes, but since i'm so short, it's really hard to find capris that look right on me. And during the summer, it's nice to have short shorts...when I'm out in the sun at band practice, I feel like it's too hot to wear anything but short shorts and a tank top.

I do have my limits, though...I consider myself to be a fairly conservative dresser and some of the shorts and skirts I see people wearing to school are things I would never wear. And I do not buy shorts at Hollister...those things should not even be called shorts!

Be thankful that she doesn't shop or wear Abercrombie and Fitch, Bloomingdales, Bebe, Juicy Couture, etc. You should see the prices of the clothes I wear, which is why I have a job and pay for almost all of my own clothes. The only clothes mom buys are a pair of sneakers or maybe a pair of jeans in the beginning of the school year.

The rule in my house was always if you bend over and I can see underwear or any private part exposed it is too short and cannot be worn outside the house. Worked for us.

As to the comment "everyone is wearing them", my reply is ?"you are not everyone and I don't care what everyone is wearing." Final answer. do you want to go to a school that requires uniforms. I can arrange that.

for those that have DD's that are short and want capri's~ take them to a tailor and get them hemmed. i am only 5 feet tall so that is what i do.

Good luck to all of you with DD's that are teenagers. My DD who is married and 27. Junior sizes fit her best, but she has a very hard time finding shorts that look nice on her. She does her best shopping at Sears and Penneys.

Several of you have written that your daughters (or yourself) have long legs. My DD has very long legs also and I have trouble finding pants long enough sometimes. When I buy her jeans we get the "tall" or "long" size. I got her some pants at Christmastime that were sweatshirt material, really cute, but barely long enough without looking like floods. Just wondering how any of you deal with this shopping dilemma?

Liz, Old navy has jeans that come in longs. Also, Abercrombie & Fitch's jeans seem to be long enough for my DD. She usually has to try on lots of styles, but we eventually find a mfr. that makes them a little longer.

UPDATE!!!!

We were in Old Navy for over an hour... had two salespeople searching for shorts in the vast array of denim, and cotton Khaki.. several colors... denim dark, denim lite, olive, yellow, white, khaki dark, pink, and Khaki lite...

Ok. here in CA. Old Navy carries shorts size 1-20 in three lengths labeled as such:

SHORT- 6 inch inseam
SHORTER- 5 inch inseam
SHORTEST- 3 inch inseam.. sure seemed like 2 inches, tho..

75% of the shorts were of the SHORTEST kind.

Cameo was pleased with the SHORTER version.. we found 1 in a size 2.., she did agree on another pair in the Short .
$19.50 each. But we were all happy... there were no pouts, no mom shaking her head.. and everybody was happy. The shorts had several styles too.. low rise etc.. but we were happy to find shorts with a regular waist ! OMG!!! Can you imagine my hobbley dance of joy!!! and the 13 year old SMILED and SAID THANK YOU!!!

THANK YOU TO ALL OF YOU FOR THE SMILES, SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGEMENT! :bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce: :bounce:

Great news!! Congrats! You just have to love those days!!!!:D :bounce:
