Dinner was at Artist Point. We ate there for the first time in 2009 and declared it our favorite meal ever at WDW and possibly anywhere else. It was just perfect ... the service, the wine, the food, all great. It was the one meal we most wanted to go back to.
We checked in a bit early and were given a pager so we went into the lounge. DH had a sangra, DS and coke and me a Magic Star cocktail
And then we waited. And waited. And waited. After about 45 minutes I asked DH to check on our time. Apparantly they had paged us 10 minutes after we got there and the pager didn't go off. Seemed odd that they wouldn't check in the lounge but that's fine. We were seated at a nice corner table over looking the pool with the lake in the background. Perfect.
And that was the last perfect thing about this meal for me.
First disappointment was that there were no sides listed on the menu. Last year the DxDDP included a side and we really enjoyed the mac & cheese and fries. I was willing to pay extra if they were no longer included in the DxDDP but they were gone. I asked the waitress and she said that all sides were removed from the menu the week before. She asked the Chef if there was anyway to make the mac & cheese and was told no. I more than understood that since it was no longer on the menu but was sooooo disappointed to see the sides removed all together.
On to the meal ... First came the bread
(Sorry that some of these pics are dark ... with the flash they washed out).
The sea salted butter was very good on the nice crunchy bread.
DS knew he was having the Smokey Portobello Soup with Roasted Shiitakes and Chive Oil 9.00. He had declared this his favorite soup ever last year.
It did not disappoint. Creamy, very lush tasty. A great soup.
DH tried the Artist Point “BLT” with Sweet Chili Lacquered Snake River Farm Pork Belly,Baby Heirloom Tomatoes, Vincotto, and Petit Greens 15.00 with the recommended Charles Smith “Kung Fu Girl” Riesling, Columbia Valley 11.00 wine pairing
This was very good, especially with the wine. In retrospect, I wish I had ordered it. I didn't feel like wine after the cocktail so I just had a few sips of DH's to try it with the pork.
I had the A Selection of Artisanal Cheeses Smokey Blue Cheese, Reypenaer VSOP, and “The Drunken Goat” with Seasonal Garnishes and Walnut Toast 14.00
I can't really explain why but this just didn't thrill me. The cheeses were very cold. I didn't really care for the garnishes. I really love cheese and had several cheese plates during the week. This was my least favorite.
For entrees, DH really wanted to try the Cedar Plank-roasted “Copper River” King Salmon with Confit Artichokes, Petit Zucchini, Baby Carrots, and Bacon-Egg Vinaigrette 48.00 again with the recommended wine pairing of Soléna Grand Cuvée Pinot Noir, Willamette 14.00
(Side note, when the waitress realized I had sampled DH's first wine, she poured just a bit in my glass so he wouldn't have the share the second glass. I thought that was a great example of that extra service that Disney is known for)
He really enjoyed it. I am not a salmon eater but did have a bite and thought it was good. I didn't want more than that one bite though.
DS really was looking forward to trying the Char-grilled Buffalo Striploin Steak with Marble Potatoes, Garden Vegetables, and Shiraz Gastrique 43.00
He really enjoyed it. I had a bite and it was pretty good. Not gamey like I thought it might be. And very lean.
I had a pork dish that I cannot find on any of the menu sites including Disney's ... I was with a creamy polenta, figs and a crispy piece of pancetta.
I really like pork and eat it out often. I knew I would be having the filet at Le Cellier and red meat at Yachtsman so I wanted to try something else. Very disappointing. I love fig anything so I thought this would be perfect for me. I didn't think the flavors came together well. I thought the pork had an odd texture to it. I really did not care for this meal at all. The crispy ham was the best part.
On to dessert - First up I had tea
Really loved the pressed pot. I had wanted to try the Jasmine Pearl but they were out so I had Imperial Earl Grey - Strong enough for an Earl but refined enough for his Lady, this connoisseur-grade Earl Grey blends Ceylon India and China estate teas with just a hint of Bergamot. I really enjoy Earl Grey tea and this was nice.
For desserts DS had Chocolate Indulgence . . . Valhrona Chocolate Ganache with Salted Chocolate Ice Cream, Amarena Cherries, and Dark Chocolate Crumble 11.00
He loved this. The salted chocolate ice cream was very good.
I had the Baked Peach Upside-Down Cake with Sweet-and-Sour
Caramel Sauce and Roasted Peach Ice Cream 10.00
Again I was disappointed. It was really a very dry cake. I expected it to be moist. The ice cream was very good.
DH had Strawberries and Cream . . . Strawberry Consommé with Grand Marnier, Vanilla Panna Cotta, and Buttered Pound Cake 10.00
He really enjoyed it, very fresh tasting.
So DS and DH still love Artist Point. Me, not so much. They said that I made the wrong choices which is probably true. Our trip next year will be a bit shorter and I don't know if we will return. It was last for me out of the signatures we tried this year. 2nd for DS and 4th for DH. So we will see.
Total on the dining plan was $206.90. Extra for DH's wine was $26.63.
The restaurant is beautiful and service was A+ but I was very let down by the food this time ... although I did enjoy the tastes I had of DH & DS meals. And they still thought it was wonderful. So maybe they are right and I just picked the wrong food for my mood that day.
