Moldy Valentine's candy!

DH got me my traditional box of Russell Stover "nut, chewy and crispy" candy for Valentine's Day. Not a red box, just the regular box. He got it at Meijer. I opened it yesterday. The end was a little bent and 3 pieces of candy had white fuzz on them. DH says it's mold! Imagine his "happiness" that the wife's present is moldy candy! He is taking it back this evening since he has the receipt. I have never seen mold on candy before!

if it is just white -not fuzzy it could be caused by surface moisture.
I would take it back or call Russell stover.

I have heard that Russell Stovers makes their chocolates up to 3 years in advance so it must take a long time to get moldy !!

It could also be that that particular batch of chocolate was not tempered properly. When that happens, the coating chocolate can turn white, tho I haven't heard of "fuzzy" :ick:

In any case, it certainly needs to be returned!

One year DH bought me Russell Stover's candy for Mother's Day. It had the white on the chocolate. I e-mailed them and they sent me a replacement box.

Depending on what the fuzz looks like it could be some kind of bug.

My Dh recently had a problem with power bars and they told us the name of the pest but I don't remember it. The woman at PowerBar said they do all they can to prevent it but it likes certain things and chocolote was one of them.

Did you notice any fuzz or webing on the outside of the package?

I'll try and find the name of it and get back to you.

I would take the box back to Meijer and get something else.

I mentioned this to DW MeanLaureen since she has sold Russell Stover for years. It's not mold, it's what they call "blossoming". All chocolate can have this happen. It is caused by extremes in temperature - like if your area was particularly cold when the candy was sent in. It has no effect on the candy itself, just doesn't look too pleasant. Stores are supposed to condition the candy gradually by not unpacking it so fast so that blossoming doesn't happen, but not all stores do this. She said not to worry about Russell Stover candy, their reps are very good and take outdated candy out on a regular basis

Well Meijer took it back without a problem...I got another box (I'm a sucker for that pink bow one). There were several weird things when I looked a little closer. The chocolates with the white fuzz were all on one end of the box. The chocolates two rows further toward the center were getting that thing where the chcolate is lighter colored, like it had been moist. There were spots on the white piece of cardboard between the candy and the boxtop, but only at the end with the fuzzy candy. And that end of the box was bent up a little. I still don't understand how that could all happen when it was wrapped in plastic, but I imagine it is related to the slightly damaged box. Regardless, glad I didn't have a problem returning it! In fact the girl at the counter was pretty darn grossed out.

Did you check the date on the box to see it it was out of code?

And right there is your updated tag. Or maybe some iteration of it, like..."Moldy Candy lady."

Or, "I prefer chocolate to penicillin"

My question is.... It's only the 13th, not even Valentine's Day yet. How come you already know that the chocolates were moldy? Were you cheating?!

EWE! The worse thing that I have ever seen with candy is petrified chocolate covered marshmellow eggs. I was cleaning out my IL's house last year when MIL was in the hospital. One room had boxes that hadn't been touched since they had moved there in 1988! Under a few shirts & sheets was food & meds. YIKES! The eggs were one of the goodies that I discovered.

I just opened my box of dark chocolate russell stover's and it is like half of it had melted and sortof smushed together and white stuff on it like it had been over cooked or something ..... gross.... I guess I will be going to the russell stover's store to return....

That happened to me once ... I bought my grandfather a box of Lindt chocolates and when he unwrapped a couple of them, they had white stuff on them. Some of my family (the ones I don't get along with) suggested that I had regifted old chocolates
