Mods, please help

I do understand why they do it...I just do not think it necessary ,and in fact kind of insulting . What bothers me most is if this is what they want to do then they need to do it with everything offensive. That is nearly impossible.....To me a word I hear on television in the after noon on a soap is not offensive (but blocked here) but other words are extremely ignorant and used to personally attack and go through unnoticed. I know it cannot be a perfect system but really its just frustrating.

I just think it is silly. It is as if we are al 10 year old children, and clearly we are not.

And out of curiosity how would they know? I have many email account through many different source for home and business. I am not saying I would do this (because if I was kicked off for something I find so silly I would be pretty irked and never have the desire to come back) but how could they know all of these?

The beauty of the boards--to me-- is that they are moderated by a wonderful group that work very hard to do the best they can for this community. And even better is that everyone has the choice to be here or not. I just am not sure I can understand why, if you feel insulted and like a 10 year old child becaue they block some words that many feel are not family friendy, that you choose to hang out here? There are many Disney Information boards out there that are much more leniently moderated or not at all and you are free to say whatever you want, however you want.

I agree with Tig, just because a word is acceptable to some does not mean that it is acceptable to a family friendy place for all. I don't let my kids watch daytime soaps--where those words are used--they are not family friendly on TV and not family friendly here. Yes, there are some words allowed here that are considered "curse" words in my house. But in my house "stupid" and "shut up" are considered bad words. There are 10 year old children on here in some cases. These boards are intended to be appropriate for children.

Yes, we have a lot of innuendo and fun, some that is closed, some that is allowed as long as it stays fairly vauge. Sometimes I think it just depends if the mod in charge is laughing too hard to hit the "LOCK" button! :rotfl2: If you really feel the need to use a filtered word--do it and let the filter do it's job. Usually we know exactly what you mean! Or use a more family friendly term that is acceptable. There are "nice" forms of most every bad word that shouldn't get you in trouble.

Anytime you set up a word filter you are making decisions for a group. There are lots of gray areas. But this board is not a democracy where we all get to vote on the bad words. The mods and WM's make that decision and we, as users agree to abide by their rules. Their board, their rules. I accepted that in my user agreement when I joined and I am fine with it.

And no, they can't always tell if you are signing up as a new name, but they have some ways of knowing. Sometimes they don't. But usually someone that has done enought to get banned doesn't change much when they reregister and just get banned again for the same types of things.

And this never gets said enough:

:cool1: :cool1: THANK YOU MODS AND WM'S FOR ALL YOU DO HERE!!!:cool1: :cool1:

Gee maybe because I actually enjoy talking to some of the people here and have made friends and I am willing to look over the hypocrisy of what is acceptable and what is not in order to talk to them....... :confused3

Obviously if you have ever read any of my posts I have never used a word that is banned, or have tried to go around it. So I am obviously able to follow and do accept the rules. But just because I accept something does not mean that it cannot be insulting at the same time.

I was also told to go back and replace the word with something more appropriate or my entire post would be deleted.:o

At least you were given the oppotunity to correct it. I got a warning the other day and my entire post was deleted.

I am still laughing at Dick Van .... poor ol Burt you can talk about Mary Poppins just not Burt....:lmao:

lovetoscrap...I won't quote your entire post since it's long, but I just wanted to say you wrote a wonderful post. I love the DIS because it is moderated, friendly (usually, lol), and generally clean. I don't let my DS8 have free access to it, but it's great that there are many threads I can let him read without worrying about language that is considered unacceptable by the general population.

And I second your "THANKS" for the Mods and WM's. Their job is not easy, but I think they do it extremely well. :thanks:

BTW - when my DS tattles that "Johnny said the S word in school today," S means either "stupid" or "shut up" too!

I used to belong to a message board where they took that attitude and it worked extremely well. Before they ditched the filters, people tried to get around them all the time and they had your opinion -- that it was insulting. So the moderator got rid of the filters and lo and behold the forum wasn't littered with profanity.

Gee, you give people a chance to behave appropriately and they do. :thumbsup2

Total agreement here!

As I've said before, what makes me laugh is that fact that this board is read worldwide and yet words that are considered 'profanity' in the UK for instance are acceptable. So when we're talking about it being a 'family' board perhaps it's about time the mods took into account that there are 'families' from elsewhere who are visitors here.

For example - I wouldn't allow my daughter to read these boards as the following words are very rude in the UK...Pissed, Fanny and Crap - and yet ones which are perfectly fine - **** (slang for breast), ****** (slang for gay in the US, type of meatball in the UK), ***** (female dog) in the UK are starred out!

I have said before that perhaps this needs to be looked into! :confused3

Well, I must be internationally minded, because while I agree completely with the filter for US words, I also agree with you that the words that you listed are crude (maybe not actually "cuss words", but definitely crude). :lmao:

I have to say that for the most part I agree too--I wouldn't allow those words for my children, but if you get rid of the last one then I would cease to exist! In fact, the way the filter here works the entire sCRAPbooking board would cease to exist!! :lmao:

The only thing that bothers me about the filter is when a supposed "bad" word is also the name of something not bad. For instance the .. (dont give me points, I was making sure no one thot I used the other "bad" one)word for breast is also the name of a type of bird and a sort of consulation prize. Sometimes it is easy to tell what the "*" word is, but for instance if I was talking about the bird and giving information to someone who had no idea there was such a bird, they wouldn't have the foggiest what I was saying. Does that make any sense? I guess it would have been easier to say I won the very last prize and it was a kind of joke and a piece of junk. (wow that was a lot of typing) No one would know whether I meant 1st prize or second or what. Is there a way to set up the filters so that it deferenciates between one meaning and another by the context of the sentence? It is worth a shot to ask. BTW..I would rather my 4yr old say the .. one then breast---she sounds like she is refering to a piece of chicken. LOL

I forgot it is also a type of dopey/jerky (for want of a better word) person

Personally, I don't **** at all. I prefer that to my boys saying "breast", it sounds to clinical and ends up making them crack up. Not good. Just not an offensive word at all to me. Oh well, not what I came on here to say...

You just always have something to say about everything. Really? A bird? Did you have to google that to find an example? :rotfl:

Oh my gosh. They are talking about the blue-footed ****ie bird on the Galapagos right now. I have *officially* decided you have too much time on your hands. You need boys. :rotfl:

Mean little birds too--killing off newborn siblings.

Hi, I'm pfishgirl
and Last week I got a too many Pictures warning for my signature.. :guilty:
I was not aware that 2 of my smileys were linked so they counted as 2 plus I had 3 others.. :confused3

ahh confession.. good for the sole..

xyzabc33, I don't think the end goal is a preschool posting place, but instead one that is acceptable to teens. I'll have to admit that, for the most part, anything I say and do here would be perfectly acceptable in my book for my teens and how I am at home, but I did have to reexamine that a bit when my 16yo signed up for an account here. My conclusion was that I didn't mind him reading anything that was here, but didn't necessarily want him reading the things I was saying, even though the context was not over the top (more venting about personal things).

But like most everything, we all draw our line in the sand in different places and the WMs and mods had decisions to make and rules to enforce and if we don't like them, we are free to post somewhere else.

I figure that I will type whatever words I want, and if the fitler does its job, so be it. This isn't MY board, and I don't make the rules.

Wow, 4 pages and I still didn't get a Mod to answer my question. I suppose Matterhorn was closest. It could have been a typo, but I honestly do not recall even posting on the thread it was supposed to be on. And if it was a typo it would have been an obvious one and could have been edited. Another question - could someone else have used the term and I quoted their post so the term was in my post as well?

Just to be clear, I do not mind the filters. I know there are kids who read the boards and the Dis is meant to be family friendly. I am just trying to figure out what happened because I know I would never type the term I was accused of posting and I was a bit upset at the warning.

I too have gotten the filter violation warning PM. I was given the option of changing my post to make it acceptable or it would *poof*. I didn't get the PM in time so it was *poofed*. I sent the mod a PM to apologize :flower3: (brown nosing.... I know) and they offered to "fix" it for me and put it back. That didn't happen but it was no biggie. I didn't realize that but typing "he^k" for example was a no no. I lived, violated, was warned and learned.

Also got a warning for my siggie too. :scared:

Boy I do like living on the edge don't I?:sad2:
